Trump bans Eagles from Super Bowl invite to White house

Has this ever happened before, since the tradition of presidents hosting championship teams began?

It seems a large number of players chose not to attend so the White House canceled the event.

The event was going to be tomorrow. He banned them when he found out almost all the black players were not going to show up.

The Golden State Warriors invite last year was also recinded.

How did I miss that? :smack:

Was there ever an invite extended? I remember it as the Warriors announced in advance they wouldn’t go and then the White House saying they weren’t invited anyway.

From your own cite; He didn’t ban them, he cancelled the event.

As I recall, I thought the Eagles already said they were not going…or maybe the Black players made this statement early-on?

I always liked the Eagles. Remember Hotel California? One of the best songs ever recorded! What’s the matter with the Orange Wonder, anyway?

What is the difference? There is going to be an event but the team is not going to be invited.

They should have all gone, then took a knee when it came time for the group photo.

From the cite, some players and the owner had accepted the invitation and others, including most if not all of the Black players, had sent their regrets. Those statements of not interested in attending have been public knowledge for a while now, but Trump thought best to wait until the last minute to cancel it for those of the team who wanted to be there, and to not tell them other than by a general announcement.

The thing speaks for itself.
FWIW I’ve never had anything but contempt for those, like Trump, who disrespect what the flag stands for.

There is an event scheduled. If they showed up now not invited would they be let in? If not then they are banned, yes?

The first point is that you didn’t read your own cite.
Consequently you over-egged your indignation.

Agree it’s not a good look, but if the White House withdraws an invitation that’s just a fit of pique on one of the parties that likely happens fairly often.

For the White House to issue a formal ban on individuals or groups that’s quite a big deal because that would be official US policy.

I did read the article. I gave my impression of what he did and to me it’s essentially a ban . We agree to disagree OK?

This reminds me can someone explain to me why flag=military? Plenty of non military folks fly the flag.

That would leave Trump clearly visible. Better would be to place the tallest up front and stand up as the photo is taken.

I’m not seeing the distinction here. They had been invited to the event and now they’re told they can’t come to the event. What’s the difference between being banned from a place and being told that you’re no longer allowed to go to a place?

This is what we need. A president who is determined to change democratic norms depends on society at large agreeing to normalize him. There were enough Eagles who decided not to normalize him. Good on them.

This is how you beat back a wanna be dictator like Trump.

Trump wants people to normalize his abnormal presidency. Salacious debate on cable TV, however insulting it might be, still normalizes him. But this one act, however insignificant it might seem, goes against an established norm. This is how you protest. You resist by refusing to treat an abnormal “leader” as normal.

Banning implies that the person themselves is not acceptable and ignores the event portion of the interaction. The event variable is key to evaluating this distinction properly.

There have been, in sports video games, times in which the championship-winning team has been depicted going to the White House. (Madden NFL 13; NBA 2K12). Does that feature still exist with games that have been made since Trump took office?
