Treasury. To let him have a real chance to destroy the credit rating of the US gov’t, not just have to wait for debt ceiling votes.
Cruz MIGHT take the #2 spot if he thought Trump had a snowball’s chance of winning. But Trump is going to get stomped and no smart Republican wants to go down with him.
Cruz is already working on his 2020 campaign.
Except that Bush was hitching his political future to Ronald Reagan. Joining up with Trump, on the other hand, would be the political equivalent of buying a ticket on the Titanic after the iceberg hit.
Oh please baby Jesus let this be true.
Ironic. Both of them remind me of Number Two…
I seriously doubt it. Cruz is many things awful, but he’s also wicked smart. More wicked than smart, but still smart nevertheless. Cruz will probably be talked into playing some kind of supporting role, which Cruz will probably interpret to mean that he will agree not to be disruptive at the Convention.
But there’s a reason people are avoiding Trump like the plague – even Corker. They’re taking the long-term view and hedging bets that Trump won’t be around in 2017. These are guys who are a track record of winning at politics, so they know a loser when they see one. And they all seem to see one in Trump. Cruz, of all people, seems least likely to take the bait.
I don’t know if I’m supposed to feel insulted or not. Guess I no longer understand six year old humor.
Yeah, I think they were just trying to come to an agreement to avoid an ugly floor fight at the convention. Under current rules, Cruz won enough states to be nominated, and hence gets to make a speech.
Poop. Turds. Doo-doo. Dookie. Number 2.
No shit?
My thought was that Cruz-Trump might be the only path to salvaging anything from this election for the Pubs. However bad Cruz is, he’s Abe Linkin compared to Trump. And it would safely compartment the Trumpster.
That much I know. Why those two posts in particular bring it to mind, I can’t see.
You mean the same Abe who suspended habeas corpus?
Cruz would savage (or attempt to) the Constitution like no other.
His SCOTUS picks would make Scalia look like a raving liberal.
I know. But Trump wouldn’t stop with the Constitution.
Cruz retains a strong base of support among likely 2020 GOP primary voters, in part because he’s not well liked by the ‘GOP establishment’, nor will he face any trouble getting re-elected Senator. The trick for him is to avoid diminishing it either by appearing to ‘de facto support Hillary’ by keeping too much distance from Trump (as Never Trump GOP’ers are and will be accused of), or from appearing too close to Trump assuming Trump loses, which Cruz probably assumes. What was agreed yesterday, Cruz gets speaking slot at the convention without offering an endorsement of Trump, fits the bill for Cruz. And Trump in his saner moments has no reason to care if particular GOP’ers ‘endorse’ him as long as willing to campaign against Hillary. There’s no reason to think Cruz is a likely VP pick for Trump.
It is true that Trump is Christie’s last chance to maintain a political career, either as VP or a cabinet appointment assuming Trump wins, he’s term limited out as Governor next year and couldn’t win an election for dog catcher now in NJ anyway. And it’s also not going to hurt Christie to maintain Trump as a friend if Christie leaves politics, Christie probably figures.
Right now, Cruz is the only Republican who’s benefiting from the Trump campaign. In 2020, he’ll be selling the idea that “Sure, Trump lost big time and cost the party a lot. We should have nominated a True Conservative. Like me. If you had nominated me in 2016, we would have beat Clinton. So I’m the best shot to beat her now.” A lot of that is nonsense. But it’s nonsense the Republican Party wants to believe.
So the last thing Cruz wants to do is devalue his political stock by being part of the Trump fiasco. He wants to be remembered as the guy who tried to save the party from Trump.

Wouldn’t be the first time he contemplated tapping a daughter.

What if Trump/Cruz is the winning ticket and Trump resigns the office after being sworn in? I think he’s spiteful enough to pull a stunt like that.
That’s why Gingrich is a likely bet - his political career can’t get any deader.
