I think a lot of people would agree with this, but the problem is that Diaper Don said the quiet part out loud!
- Glad he went full Keynesian during the COVID crisis. Checks for everyone!
- Glad he signed Operation Warp Speed, which gave us the mRNA COVID vaccine within a year.
- Glad he realized that the US was effectively being suckered in Afghanistan and said “fuck this, we need to get the hell outta here.”
- I, too, like Big Macs.
Yes, this is really the crux of the issue.
As a human being there’s plenty of light-hearted or incidental/unimportant things that I’m sure me and him could agree on. Most of which have been mentioned in the thread. I’m fine with a well done steak. I like McDonald’s and ketchup. I think the Rush Hour movies are harmless fun and Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker are entertaining to watch as actors. I even enjoy the UFC and WWE shows as entertainment. In fact it kind of pisses me off that those two companies have gotten in as deeply with the regime as they have.
But even when it comes to policy or political issues that sound like good common sense, (lower grocery prices, no more wars in the middle east, closing the tariff loophole that allowed companies like temu to prosper), or policies where a nuanced position could be taken on either side, (NATO defense spending), he is still an inveterate liar and a malignant narcissist. You can never, ever, EVER trust anything he says at face value. Because it’s either a blatant lie to burnish his own reputation (he doesn’t give a crap about grocery prices for average Americans), he has clear ulterior motives, (his rhetoric on NATO sounds a lot more like trying to undermine the alliance in favor of Putin/Russia rather than a principled position) or he’ll so completely fuck up the execution of the policy that he ends up making things worse, (tariffs).
So even when he says or tries to do something positive, that you might theoretically be able to support, the very next question inevitably has to be “What’s the real motive?” or “So how is he going to screw this up?” When a politician so completely and utterly violates and breaks the public trust every “agreement” comes with an asterisk.
“The Department of War” is the accurate name for the department that Hegseth is currently dismantling. It hasn’t been about defense since (ironically) about the time when it changed its name to the “Department of Defense”.
The Big Beautiful Bill, while- IMHO- a bad bill, did save us some tax money with the new senior citizen tax deduction.
I kinda love it when Trump meets with the British Royal Family and violates a bunch of their bullshit social customs. “Always walk behind the queen?” Fuck you, you want that sort of deference from an American, you should have fought harder at Yorktown.
The problem is that Trump says he likes some things only because he thinks that doing so will cause people to like him. For example-Trump and the Bible.
Do you also love it when, say, Trump brusquely pushes aside the president of Montenegro as he did at a NATO event during his first term, so he could get his own fat mug in front of the cameras?
I am no fan of much of British hereditary bullshit privilege, but British royalty does play an essential and dignified part in the constitutional monarchies of Britain and its Commonwealth members. US president or not, Trump was a guest in their country and had a diplomatic obligation to abide by their diplomatic and traditional norms.
Cheer on his buffoonery all you like, but aggressive boors like Trump are what help create the trope of the “ugly American” around the world. It isn’t fair, but it only takes a minority of miscreants to create the impression. It’s extremely damaging to the national image when the president of the United States is one of them.
Getting rid of the penny, wacking Soleimani, leaving Afghanistan, Operation Warp speed, NATO countries should increase defense spending.
Not sure how to phrase it, and the way Trump’s done it is nearly 100% wrong, but the Dems need to flex more muscle both domestically and in foreign policy when they’re back in power. The purpose of having power is to use it.
When the Queen is visiting the US, or when both are in some third country, sure, walk ahead of her. But being a guest in someone else’s home carries with it some obligations of politeness.
Got it in one. And when I do have a well done steak I like ketchup on it. Non-well done, either a tiny bit of A1 on the side, or whatever the restaurant puts on it.
Everything else about his aesthetic is either neutral or repulsive. And the very few things he’s done as President that I don’t disagree with he’s gone about the wrong way.
Yes, that was a good idea, but not the way he went about it. First of all, it’s up to Congress, not the President, to determine which coins should be produced and in whatever quantity. Second, eliminating the penny should have been accompanied by an agreement how retailers would round off cash transactions.
Again, Trump’s execution sucks. We had a pretty good agreement from 2015, the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, but someone chose to tear that up. Instead, we had this war, after which we might end up with a similar agreement, except that Iran is in a stronger position, now that it knows that it can shut down the Strait of Hormuz whenever it wants. Meanwhile, we’ve depleted the stockpiles of munitions and it will take a decade or more to return to the previous levels.
I like KFC.
Oh Snap! That’s some Old School Burn right there! ![]()
I have no desire to own a dog.
And that, you know, it’s his own daughter…
He’s gotten rid of a lot of the available muscle we had internationally anyway. I know this isn’t a debate thread but I had to mention it.
I’m surprised no one has mentioned the change from schedule I to schedule III for medical marijuana. Off the top of my head that’s the only thing I can think of that I agree with him.
ETA. That’s assuming we’re talking about Trump 47. Trump 45 did a few other good things, which Trump 47 now disagrees with (the rush to develop the mRNA Covid vaccines being a good example).
Which was a Biden-era decision that he allowed to carry on through.
A couple more…
- Doesn’t drink alcohol
- Loves his Diet Coke
This is about the only thing I can think of that he and I agree on.
