Trump has already “joked” about being King. And Pope. “King and Tyrant” IS exactly what he wants to be.
I think it is silly to argue about whether he will run for president again. Legally he can’t, we all agree. He knows that too. That doesn’t mean he won’t try something else, likely something involving violence or at least threats of violence or military action. It won’t be something legal. But He DOES NOT CARE. He does not care about what the Constitution says, that should be screamingly obvious. He absolutely will try to stay in power by some means, even - maybe especially - if it means the end of our democracy.
Unless he’s dead. And then I wouldn’t put it past Vance to try the same thing, but I think Vance has much less chance of succeeding.
This, as I understand it. The VP is an elected official, not appointed by the President (the way that the rest of the Cabinet is), and the President has no ability to simply fire his VP.
I read that and wondered what it was a typo for, too. Probably the word “or”. I was probably trying to correct a swypo with one of the choices my phone offers, and hit the “6” instead of the option. The options are close to the numbers, and i accidentally insert a number all the time, although i usually catch those and fix them.
This is not where i expect to learn of an actual medical emergency involving our fearless leader. I’ll get half a dozen news alerts on my phone, plus a few friends will mention it in Discord, and I’m likely to get a direct text from someone, too.
The VP can resign. Agnew proved that. Therefore the VP can be pressured, or rewarded, to resign.
So it’ll come down to how hard Vance’s backers want Vance to stay versus how hard trump or trump’s backers want Vance to go. Vance himself has no real power here compared to the amount of violence and money and criminality the various backing factions control.
Remember, there are no rules in a dictatorship. There isn’t even precedent. There’s just power & convenience for that power.
Rosebushes bursting into bloom in the middle of winter. Niagara Falls flowing upward. Cumulus clouds forming spontaneously into heart shapes. Cats and dogs swarming into the streets and yowling out Vivaldi’s “Spring.” Ya know: signs.
An old joke from the Soviet Union is (unfortunately) appropriate in the US today.
A man goes up to a newsstand and buys a newspaper…
He then glances at the front page, then turns aside and tosses the whole newspaper straight into the trash.
Next day, he turns up, and does the same thing. Buys it, glances at the front page, throws it in the trash.
Next day, same thing. The newsstand worker is increasingly puzzled, but doesn’t say anything.
But eventually, after a couple of weeks of this, he can’t take it. “I’m sorry, friend, but I must ask: why do you buy the paper every day and then just look at the front page and throw it out?”
“Oh, I’m just checking for something.”
“OK, but: what are you checking for?”
“I’m checking for a particular obituary.”
“But sir, you don’t even open the newspaper! The obituaries aren’t even on the front page!”
“Oh, believe me, the one I’m waiting for will be.”
