It seems like you’re asking Democrats to make the decision for political advantage, not for health. I disagree: I think Democrats should make the decision 100% on health grounds, using the best-available scientific guidelines.

Doing so will have, as a side-effect, branding themselves as the party of Pay Attention To Facts. Or more of a strengthening of that brand.

In any case, I think that’s what Democrats are currently doing. The discussions are currently underway about how to handle their convention, and I’m pretty sure it’ll end up being something that follows the best available scientific guidelines. There’s no rush.

O.K. Do it for the right reason. Do you imagine that C-19 is going to be all gone in August? And if it’s down to a really low, “manageable” level, that it won’t come flooding back, at least in the delegate’s home territories? Is it not likely to turn the sites of the conventions into hot spots? I’m not willing to turn pointless political theater, on the one hand, and a trump lovefest, on the other, into one extra death from this thing.

Because the gop will drag it out to the bitter end. If they let theirs go forward, people will die. If the Dems cancel early, maybe the gop will grow a spine and overrule what’s-his-name. If they don’t then it’s on them.

Yeah, I get your moral high ground/ health remark - I’m not expressing myself as well as I’d like to. I’m trying to say that the Dems have the MHG, and they should use that for the health of the nation. The fact that that would expose the crassness of the administration is a bonus, and I’m just crass enough to accept that bonus.

I think they’ll probably make their convention be virtual, or some such. But they’re doing it steadily and with thought and planning (I hope, dear sweet Jesus I hope). I don’t think they need to rush the job in an undoubtedly futile attempt to convince the GOP to do the right thing.

GOP to look at potential alternative sites for convention

Organizers of the Republican National Convention said Tuesday they will begin visiting potential alternative sites after North Carolina’s governor told them the COVID-19 pandemic requires them to prepare for a scaled-back event if they want to hold it in Charlotte.

Gov. Roy Cooper, a Democrat, said in a letter to the top convention organizer and the national GOP chairwoman that “planning for a scaled-down convention with fewer people, social distancing and face coverings is a necessity.” The letter came on the eve of a deadline from the GOP for assurances that Cooper would allow a full-scale event in August.

Later, Cooper told reporters it’s unlikely that virus trends will allow a full-capacity nominating convention for President Donald Trump to proceed at Charlotte’s NBA arena.

“We think it is unlikely that we would be to the point at the end of August to be able to have a jam packed 19,000-person convention in the Spectrum arena,” Cooper said. “So the likelihood of it being in Charlotte depends upon the RNC’s willingness to discuss with us a scaled-down convention, which we would like to do.”

Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel, one of the recipients of Cooper’s letter, accused him of “dragging his feet” on giving them guidance for proceeding with convention plans. She released a statement saying that while the party would like to hold its event in Charlotte, “we have an obligation to our delegates and nominee to begin visiting the multiple cities and states” that have reached out to express interest in hosting.
