I’ve been personally saying for over a year now that he’s more Mussolini than Berlusconi, but eh - close enough.

In a democratic republic, the politics must be compromises, so “keeping campaign promises to the letter” will nearly always be an impossibility.

It is in the dictatorships that keeping promises to the letter is ‘normal’ as all compromise and engagement with the opposition can be overridden.

This is a good point which should not go unobserved.

The article mentioned that she is the only person who is authorized to sign foreign surveillance warrants.
It was mentioned on CNN that if she is fired, there will be no one to perform that duty.
Only a Senate confirmed person can sign those warrants.
I’ll bet Trump doesn’t know that.

That has turned Session’s confirmation into a referendum on this issue. Not that they probably won’t still confirm him. But some may use the process to force the issue by insisting he commit to a position prior to confirmation.

Trump and his inner circle are trying to run the government by decree and it’s starting to piss off even those who support him. While this should have been predictable to anyone with even a modicum of awareness it seems to have caught a bunch of them by surprise.

They completely bypassed the House Homeland Security and Judiciary Committees who have jurisdiction over immigration issues. They didn’t know about it until it was being signed on live television. They also failed to inform or consult with the Senate Majority Whip and Senate Foreign Relations Committees. They also chose not to communicate any of this in advance with the Speaker of the House. All of them have spoken on record today to say they weren’t consulted prior to the order and had no hand in its creation.

I wouldn’t assume automatic rubber stamp confirmations for any of his picks anymore. Then again I wouldn’t have assumed we’d ever be talking about the reality of a religious ban currently in effect in the USA.

The Republicans have a decision to make, and they need to make it relatively quickly. Is the government now purely presidential… A Trump government? Or is there any place at all for the Senate, House and Judiciary? Will they roll over and show their bellies at this point, and give all power to Trump? Will he be an effective dictator going forward?

In the next week, they are going to have to decide.

President Trump fired his acting attorney general on Monday after she defiantly refused to defend his immigration executive order, accusing the Democratic holdover of trying to obstruct his agenda for political reasons.
