I was displeased with the initial suspension of 30 days, and I’m equally displeased with Tuba’s refusal to do the right thing and resign. She made a bad decision, and whether it was in the heat of the moment or not, whether it was dealing with a former criminal or not, whether it was here or not, is inexcusable. She knowingly and intentionally violated the privacy policy here, I believe her exact words were “The Privacy Policy at the SDMB prevents me from doing this there, so I’ll do it here.” Willful disrespect of the rules by someone in a position of power is unacceptable. She flew past the line of “avoiding the appearance of impropriety,” and took a longjump over “impropriety” itself.
Feel free to check my join date, by the way. I hope it’s old enough for you.
How did you find out about this issue? Do you have any personal stake in the issue, e.g., knowing any of the people involved in it? Were you reading the boards when this issue came up originally?
Say it all you like, but it’s full of crap. You have no idea who or what has been volunteered to staff and no clue how the current staff decides to let anyone help them.
And you can be darn sure a board that expects payments is going to get decreased currency out of the “selfless volunteers” line. I know that for the most part staff is volunteers but the “it’s free, you can’t complain” meme is gone forever.
I say Tuba should lose the admin post. Let’s see the new volunteer list.
I agree. It’s not like anybody’s advocating female circumcision, it’s just being relieved of an unpaid job on a damn message board. And now that the members are actually paying for their subscriptions, IMHO it’s more important than ever that members not worry about their privacy, even the scumbags. If I was on the fence about subscribing (or had something to hide) this worry might make them lose my business.
IMHO, the punishment of not being an Admin anymore is appropriately justified by the potential loss of business that might occur by people worrying about their privacy. If one can call being relieved of unpaid work as a “punishment”.
What’s even more awful, I think, is that everyone is well aware that there is still going to be action taken against TD, outside of our little SDMB world. The banned poster in question has posted that, in public, as recent as this morning. Why the other mods and admins would risk this board is beyond my imagination.
So, now we know that not only is TubaDiva a hothead who couldn’t keep privileged information to herself, the rest of the administration couldn’t keep its word regarding the 30 day suspension, either.
I, like another poster, am damn glad that nobody on the SD ‘staff’ has a single lick of personal information about me.
Although, this did cause me to realize that sex offenders are not the only people who are easy to locate on the internet.
I found out about the issue by reading it on the board when people were calling for TubaDiva’s banning. I do not know TubaDiva or any of the administrators of this board.
Well socks and indignation aside, Blue Ruin is a cool user name I will give him/her that!
I have no horse in this race. I could care less who the admins are on this board, mostly because this is not MY board. I may pay a small fee to use it, but that hardly gives me voting rights on who the admins are.
Now, that being said, TD shouldn’t be allowed back. I cannot imagine another job, paid or not, where using private information to publicly out someone can be condoned. But the decision has been made, so bitching about it probably wont matter. So I for one will welcome our new TD overlords.
Add my name to the list of those who feel Tuba’s actions were rash and ill-thought out. This isn’t the first time I’ve noticed an upset over her modding actions, either.
There was a thread about magic tricks where she bowed to the pressure of questionable sources and refused to let members share information. On a board devoted to fighting ignorance, this seemed like a poor decision. The follow-up thread where her actions were discussed.
Then there was the time she used her status as mod to solicit charity for another member who got himself into a bad situation. Turned out the guy had stiffed some other members at a dopefest and was not highly thought of to start. The fallout from that thread.
Both incidents left me with a bad taste in my mouth with regards to how Tuba does her job.
I feel less secure in my anonymity, but that would have been true whether TD was allowed back or no. I really don’t care at this point what the mods and admins feel is proper “punishment”. Their sandbox, their rules, so I’ve no cause to bitch.
But having been sufficiently nauseated by several posters’ hideous minds, as well as this particular event already, I’ve found, not surprisingly, that the less time I spend around here, the happier and more productive I am. I’ve a feeling this is just one of those nails in the participatory coffin, so to speak.
No, don’t worry, I won’t let the door hit me in the ass.
You know, I wonder if we need to have a policy on the LJ stuff the same way we have one about other boards. Namely, ‘don’t bring that shit here.’
No offense meant to NotWithoutRage, it just gets tiresome knowing that we’re often only getting to see half of what’s really going on here, or that there’s a clique among us that goes off and discusses this sort of thing out of sight, but not out of mind.
Stonebow, I’d be fine with such a policy. But the community on LJ is called SDMB (well, at least one of them is), and as such, I feel it is relevant to the current discussion.
