Turkey Time MMP(Somebody's gotta do it!)

That sounds like a good idea but having seen the two menus, it might take me more than an afternoon to digest lunch - and you might end up wheeling me round to Jynx’s place for dindins!

Yall are welcome to come to Chesapeake, VA anytime.

If you stay until Friday, then you get to help paint the hallway too, no extra charge.

Since my sister is visiting her child in another state and I have no use for my brothers, I will be spending T-Day with my friend at the barn. We will play with our horsies, then grab a bite to eat and see the movie Flight. When my mom died, she took the gravy making magic with her, so there’s no point in having turkey. The only reason to have a turkey is for stuffing with gravy. I miss the good old days when I was a kid and the house was full of relatives for the day and we had the meal at 1pm then around 6 the leftovers were hauled out. sigh

For the last several years, I’ve been hosting T-giving. I’m not a fan of turkey, but actually prepare a very good turkey and cave in and do it for this one particular day.

I also prepare mashed potatoes, gravy, stuffing and dressing, cranberry sauce, and a sweet potato souffle/casserole thing. I also provide various desserts and vegetable sides. My daughter and her fiance will usually bring a side dish too. No one else brings anything, nor do ask them to bring anything.

This year, however, my mother in law told us she wanted to host. I was happy about this because I work every day but Thanksgiving and never get to take time off during this time. I would have happily prepared and brought some sides and/or desserts.

But now, although she still wants to host, she expects us to go over there early and prepare the meal for her at her house. So, I have to cook and clean up in a kitchen that is not mine. This is just a bunch of extra stress for me. If I have to cook, I’d rather do it in my own damn kitchen.

To probably be a little fair to my mother in law, my husband probably volunteered us for this stupid thing. I am not happy, but if I dare gripe about it, I’ll be considered bitchy and uncaring.:dubious:

Yeah, it’s Monday, I’m grumpy and pissed about a whole bunch of things right now, so my whole attitude sucks.

Taters one does not invite someone and then expect the guest to cook. I say tell Mr. Taters to have at it. I know you wouldn’t do that but I would. Make sure he has plenty of chores that day.

wetone I have no idea of what you’re used to gravy wise on Turkey Day but there is a recipe for giblet gravy included in the recipe I gave for chikin ‘n dressin’ in the Mumper recipe blog. 'Tis a pretty much foolproof gravy recipe.

BooFae I have this mental image of wheelin’ you around on a doily Hannibal Lecter style. Jynx the offer of chawklit moooooooose pie could most likely persuade me to paint your hallway.

flytrap the whole point behind canned cranberry sauce is the sound it makes slidin’ out of the can. It’s tradition! Though I can make a pretty tasty orange/cranberry sauce.

ETA: FearedOne my turkey has been thawin’ since last Thursday. I am happy to report it is perfectly thawed.

It’s not so bad - there’s a ST:TNG marathon on BBCAmerica, and an NCIS marathon on USA Network.

My immediate family is too far for a day trip and it’s too expensive to stay over. Cousin’s brother’s in-laws are very unpleasant to be around. The cat and I like the quiet

Tomorrow, I will fire up the smoker, which will contain two turkey london broils, turkey andouille snausages, & assorted other things. (including maybe some fish for tomorrow’s dinner??) One will be wrapped up & left in a fraternity house fridge on Wed morning to (hopefully) be picked up when we are done on Thurs to be transported to where I’m eating. I really hope anyone in said fraternity is either home with family or working with us so that it doesn’t “disappear” in a drunken after-midnight fridge raid!
The other will be for dinner with my family on Friday & the remains, along with the snausages & other things will be turned into smoked turkey jambalaya on Satidy. The jambalaya is the real reason I cook.

Be careful of what you wish for. Former Gates County resident here, who want to go back.

<yawn> Happy Blurfday, everyone!

I am just gonna hop on over to EVERYONE’s house to eat, how’s that? And I like painting, so count me in.

This year’s Thanksgiving will be a smaller one than in the past for MrTao’s family, as Great-nana matriarch passed on last year, and things just are not the same. So it will be just about 15 people, or maybe 20, much less than the usual 50-60 extended family that arrive.
It will be good! We are not expected to bring anything except drinks, which we have stockpiled, but I am gonna make a wild rice SUMPin, just not sure what yet. Should be easy, but we gotta clear out our pantry before the move and I have a lot of wild rice

Currently I am prepping a cell phone to send to my mom. She is without phone service, as my sister…well, it’s a long and angry story. I don’t want my mom without service, so I am sending her a cell phone whether she wants one or not! I already set up her wallpaper with a rose <her favorite> that I doctored up with her phone number; that was the only way I ever remembered mine, so I figure it’ll work for her, too.

And now…coffee time!

We’ll be having the traditional dinner. I think one time either for Thanksgiving or Christmas, my dad didn’t want to cook it all so we had burritos with hamburger.

My birthday was yesterday, so I went over to my parents’ place. We didn’t really do anything special, although it had been quite a while since I had gone over. Ate dinner at Don Cucos, which was excellent and I still have half my meal leftover. And I brought home two pieces of cake, because unless I go over tonight there probably won’t be any left.

My sister is going to get there tonight and is leaving before Thanksgiving dinner (which is fine, because she can’t eat turkey anyway).

Will paint for food.

I have been remiss!

From Tim Cavanaugh

Frosty the Turkey was a very happy bird
He was mighty glad With the life he had
There was none that he preferred.

Frosty the Turkey had a friend named Farmer Pete
The way he cared For his fowl was fair
He gave them lots to eat.

Oh Frosty had the life a carefree gobbler was he
He didn‚t see that one day he might be the gobblee

One day while Frosty was trying to relax
Pete came by With a tearful eye
And a big old ugly axe

Pete said to Frosty, Thanksgiving is this week
So you‚ll meet your end For your end is meat
And my family wants to eat

Well Frosty was remarkable he didn’t carry on
He simply said, Why not instead be vegetarians

Pete was so happy for he loved his little friend
And decapitation is no way
For a friendship to end.

So on Thanksgiving Turkey was not served
They were fed instead With sweet corn bread
And a friendship was preserved.

Now this would seem to be a happy ending for our song
But don’t forget the awful death of Jake, the Ear of Corn.

Oh, Frosty the Turkey was a very happy bird
He was mighty glad With the life he had
There was none that he preferred.

Bad News for people surrounding the Jynxster

Mmy co-worker who JUST had a the knee replacement like 3 weeks ago was taken to the hospital via ambulance on Friday with a stomach ulcer infection. Still there
not sure when he will get out.

One of other my coworkers is the grandfather to this little boy:

http://hamptonroads.com/2012/11/babysitter-charged-death-va-beach-2yearold

So sad.

And another coworker’s partner’s brother (who is unemployed) is in the hospital with a
really bad Crone’s disease flare up also not sure when he will get out.

Ugh.

And I think I screwed something up at work. Not a good day!

Ruble! LTNS! And you came back with a jaunty TurkeyDay tune for us.

Thanksgiving will be celebrated at my house this year, so far there are 13 confirmed guests, with a couple of invitees not heard from yet. There will be 4 generations of women in my family in attendance, which is very cool. Two of my daughters will be helping me in the kitchen, the menu is:

Deviled Eggs and other snacks
Turkey:brined and roasted
Stuffing
Mashed Potatoes
Gravy
Sweet Potato Casserole w/pineapple and brown sugar
Green Bean Casserole (I am not given an option here, the kids demand it)
Creamed Pearl Onions
Jell-O Salad w/raspberries and sour cream
Fruit Salad
Cranberries (my recipe, with orange zest and a tipple of Gran Marnier)
Rolls (home made)
Pumpkin Pies
freshly whipped cream
Apple Pie
Caramel Pecan Cheesecake (my oldest daughter’s contribution, along with brining the turkey)

I’m watching the news and it appears that we will be having the usual stormy weather for the holiday, with luck the power won’t go out. I’m so glad that I don’t have to travel. My oldest girl and her family will stay the night, as they are coming up from the south end of the state.

In other news I am drinking my coffee, soon I will shower and then get on with pre-holiday sprucing up of the house. Yippee skippee, another Monday morning down!

I’m going to wiki’s for Turkey Day dinner!
eta - the kids can have my crunchy fried onions after I pick the green beans out.

Hi Ruble!

Happy Birthday, Shiny Cat!

There’s another mumper b-day coming up in about 8 days or less, but I won’t say who. (No, it isn’t me.)

Ok, back to homework.

confirms rosie’s place at the table.

I’m another of them furriners, and a vegetarian one at that- so no turkey for moi. I’m a little tempted to try and do some other traditional Murrican type foods for the day, just for kicks, but I have pottery class on thursday what is 6.30-9pm, and I’ll be alone in the house all day, so there doesn’t seem much point.

Finally posted the box of felt things to Mum, and I still have almost 2 weeks before the Christmas fair, so I might do OK.
I already spent some of the money though, which I know I shouldn’t have done, but I needed a proper tank for my axolotls, as the older one is starting to get big and I found a tank just the right size for sale cheap on ebay.

Was only £25, and if I don’t get that for the felt critters, given that they’re being sold at a zoo that runs the local reptile 'n amphibian club, I shall be disappointed.

Spent the rest of the day ogling fishies down the shop- now I have a tank sorted for the 'lotls, I’m going to redo my community tank. I’d been putting it off in case I had to use the tank, so it just had 2 little tetras in it after Andre the cichlid killed himself. I’ve not decided what I’m going to get yet. Hmmmmm…

Happy monday! Also happy first-of-the-not-birthdays Shinycat!
