You got me on this one-much better. Accordions would also play polka music.
And for our final trick … aged cheese with orange marmalade.
You folks all brought smiles to my face today, and made me count my blessings. I credit you Mumpers for this renewed appetite.
{{{OW}}}
It’s been a long time since I’ve roasted a duck shoe. I’m envious.
Glad your SIL is doing better nellie. I hope that you get another good neighbor once your friend leaves.
hippie, your Spanish hamburger sounds suspiciously like the goulash (as differenciated from Hungarian goulash) that I grew up with. Glad you’re feeling up to doing some cooking.
I will likely listen to *Alice’s Restaurant * tomorrow. In a few minutes, I’m connecting to a Zoom music jam. It will include everyone who usually gathers up north with us on the Friday after Thanksgiving to jam, along with some of the Nashville folk and bluegrass community. My autoharp, keyboard, penny whistle and bodhran are ready to go.
I actually left irk this afternoon before full on dark today (it sucks to be in the eastern end of your time zone this time of year), but not by much. I swung by the Pubic Sto’ and picked up a nice ham steak, and then through Arby’s for a nod to a turkey meal (a turkey gyro with sweet potato fries). Tomorrow, I’ll grill the ham steak, make some miso-ginger sweet potatoes and a zucchini casserole for my festivities.
Stay safe and healthy y’all!
I’m enjoying your appetite, I say as I head out to my kitchen for crackers, cheese and Seville bitter orange marmalade. I’m fresh out of caviar. Out of biscuits too
For the whole length of the song? My hands would be shredded by the end!
So I did the midnight sort. And the regular sort. And then stayed extra extra, because a Next Day Air truck was late, and the med, checks and frozen turkeys had to be sorted out so they could be delivered. What mental genius gets a frozen turkey delivered the day before Thanksgiving? I have done a load of whites, and napped a bit, in large part to a small rotund cat on my lap.
The rats need pants to breed?
SHRINK, I WANT TO KILL
Safe travels, MetalMouse!
Sister Mary Imaculata requires you to say a Rosary before you can leave, but the rosary contains the incorrect number of beads.
Hey!
:
Evening all. Made it up to brother’s house about 4pm, rained heavily on the North-South drive, somewhat clearer going East-West–go figure. Delayed on the way by a FedEx trailer (the second one of the double trailers) that had fallen over and blocked one of the two lanes…stacked up traffic. Otherwise, except for 20 miles in Kentucky that were one lane each way (roadwork) it was pretty easy driving.
At brother’s now with 5 other adults (all the kids are in their 20’s and out of college), two elderly basset hounds, two young bloodhounds (2.5 and 11 months) and on 200-lb English Mastiff. So a bit crowded for a hermit like me.
Have read all but absorbed little. Tired and will be heading off to bed pretty early tonight. All y’all take care.
Callers were cranky and rude today, and hitting Winco after irk was something of an error in judgement. Not as much of one as the people who were buying FROZEN turkeys tonight, though (snicker).
Dinner was magic Internet Chinese food, brought to our door by a very nice young man. We’ll get at least 2-3 meals each from tonight’s plunder, so not as outrageous a splurge as it could be.
Tomorrow’s big meal remains TBD. DH does not like turkey, and we do not have local relatives, so it’s just the two of us. Amazingly, Hades Annex will be closed tomorrow. A bit funny how eager closing sups were to rush us out at 5 so they could scram, too. They were both very nice about it, but it was definite they wanted everyone (including themselves) GONE. Fair enough.
DH has already been advised that any alarm clock going off tomorrow DIES.
Hey, I’m Czech! We do accordion polkas too. I can poke fun at myself. Actually had to polka in gym class in junior and senior high.
Polka originated as a Czech peasant dance. Historic folklore has it that a peasant girl named Anna Slezak invented the steps one day for her own amusement. … The polka dance was first introduced to Prague ballrooms in 1835, and to Paris ballrooms in 1840.
Hope all the Mumpers who are traveling for their celebrations are all safely there and warmly greeted. Remember your coaster manners tomorrow!
metal mouse, it sounds like you’re in doggy heaven.
Just finished up with the Zoom jam. It was fun, even though it was a little slow getting started (getting tech adjusted across 16 homes). It made me really miss being with the family up north, but it was fun having a few Nashville area musicians (including Date guy) picking along with us. We closed with the traditional number Will the Circle Be Unbroken. It was the first year without Uncle Toad (yes, that’s what we called ex’ uncle) and Uncle Canton, who were among the first generation of his family to play bluegrass on stage. My granny and her sister Sue would have loved this.
not going to give details but I’m so over my family and these holidays , hope everyone’s day better than mine is going to be ,
Well, some of us have to work today. For the rest of you HAPPY THANKSGIVING!
Today’s shower medley was the Imperial March from Star Wars and Working 9 to 5.

Hey, I’m Czech! We do accordion polkas too.
Polish, not Czech, but I grew up with polkas. And accordions - Dad played from the time he was 10, and I had lessons and my own accordion at 7. First piece of music I composed was a polka, and Dad and I were the only ones who ever played it. If I don’t write it down, it will be lost to the ages…
FCD’s youngest brother spent the night here. He doesn’t sleep at night - he’s been on the recliner watching TV - I can hear Andy Griffith from the other room. Odd fellow…
MIL wants to do dinner around 2 or 3, “so everyone will be hungry.” Which means I’ll be starving. I’ll have to have something around 11 or I’ll grow a killer headache. Whatever - her house, her schedule. I’ll walk this morning, then start packing - taking the few clean clothes out of the suitcase and loading up the dirties. Plus there’s stuff that can go into the car today.
Mostly, tho, it’ll be a day of slothage. Most of the food is prepped and awaiting the oven, and with just 5 of us eating, we don’t need to set up a big table. Even dishes will be quick and easy. Thus beginneth our last full day in FL.
Happy Thanksgiving (or not)!! Have a second piece of pie!!
Morning, mumpers! Happy Turkey Day to those celebrating it…I’m celebrating Thursday with a cup of good strong tea.
hippie good to see you posting again, take care of yourself now that you’re home, I’m sure that turkey dinner can wait until you are ready to tackle it.
I cooked last night, just chicken and veggies shoved in a pan with garlic, chicken stock and finished off with caramelised onion cream cheese to make a fairly smooth sauce. I gave 'im indoors brown rice with his, and I had steamed broccoli and cauliflower 'cos I miss having a ton of veggies with everything. He doesn’t like most veggies so I really feel like I’m missing out now. And yes, I do have some fart blossoms in the fridge for later
Good Mornin’ Y’all! Up and caffeinatin’. YAWN ‘Tis 68 Amurrkin out and cloudy with a predicted high of 79 with possible, or not, rain/tstorms/apocalypse predicted for this afternoon/evenin’. We shall see. Soonish I shall get Mr. Turkey (his name was Tom, apparently) into the oven. Everything else is prepped and ready to bake, or heat up. Of course, the gravy will need to be made. After all, it’s all about the gravy. Cheesecake got made yestiddy and the strawberries are maceratin’ as I post. I expect folks to show up around eleven for munchies and Bloody Mary’s. We shall feast around one in the p. of m.
Hope everyone who is celebratin’ Thanksgiving has a great day however you choose to celebrate. Everyone else, hope you have a great just a regular day.
Now I need more caffeine and to feed rumbly tummy. Then I suppose I must purtify and don appropriate attire to receive and entertain company. Holidays are so complicated!
Happy Thanksgiving or regular ol’ Thursday Y’all!
Good morning, y’all. Happy Thanksgiving. It’s a chilly 46 here but warm and toasty in the house. EC kitty is here at my elbow. Other cat Tikva is pressed up against the electric radiator. I have the rest of yesterday’s delivered T-Day dinner in the fridge, which I’ll probably have for a late breakfast. At 3-ish my neighbor is delivering another dinner from a nice restaurant.
I might be turning into a hermit… contrary to feeling lonely today, I feel almost euphoric that I won’t have to make the effort to interact at length with anyone in person today.
When I do feel lonely, it’s not so much that I don’t want to be alone (because I’m 100% introvert and fine with being alone), it’s that I miss being special to someone. I miss someone wanting to be with me, seeking me out just to be with me. I miss (and I do remember it…) the way someone’s face lights up when they see you. Being alone sometimes feels like a judgment against me and against the desirability of my company.
I don’t envy y’all’s and my friends’ family tensions and squabbles, but I do envy people who are part of a group that wants to see them and be with them. A group that feels a day or a holiday isn’t complete until they’ve touched, seen, and talked to you, physically or virtually. I am lacking that big time. But when the pandemic is over, that won’t change. That was my life before (since the deaths two years ago of the last two people who truly regarded me as special), and that will probably be my life from now on. It’s a mixed blessing.
I still have much to be thankful for. My late husband-- God bless him-- left me financially okay. Not wealthy, or even “well off,” but okay. And that’s plenty. Many people in my circumstances are much worse off in many, many ways. Knowing that in itself doesn’t help me feel better in any given moment, but it reminds me of where I am. And that it’s good place, all things considered.
Howdy All from Irk. I was invited to Thanksgiving dinner with the neighbors and had every intention of going but now I am having second thoughts. The neighbor lady is the jail nurse supervisor and there are 35 jailed ppl with the virus so I am going to stay home alone and make my own. They may be upset with me but too bad. The shit is getting real here. The boss sent me and his other direct reports an email about teleworking 2 days a week. I took the training and filled out the agreement but have not yet heard if it is approved. I have all that training to do for 2021. I lugged my irk computer home last Firday and was able to connect.
I also hired a dog walker who actually is a dog whisperer.
This was all written on Tuesday I think as that was the last day I worked. Had a meltdown on Tuesday night. Begged boss for Wed off so I could start to sort some of my mess. I got all the bank accounts put where I can see them online. Filed insurance claim, social security claim. I have an appt for a lawyer consultation on Tuesday and went to the grocery store at 10 pm last night. Since I’ve decided to do my own cooking I’ll just cook a hen and all the fixings. Neighbor is not mad and will send me a plate.
I bet a new boss on Tuesday which will be interesting since I’ve not really had one in over a year. Hope she’s nice.
Way too late to edit. So anyway got me a dog walker who he took right to which is a load off my old addled mind.
I hope everyone has a grand Thanksgiving for the Americans and a great Thursday for the rest of you lot.
That was really well put, @ThelmaLou and I want to thank you for articulating my own feelings better than I ever could have. I feel exactly the same, when on the surface I have everything I need.
But yeah, that “lights up when you walk in” moment is unmatchable.
Anyway, I could easily sink back into despair and depression, so I won’t dwell. Going over to a friendly co-worker’s home (after today, I suspect the line will blur into just “friend”) for a casual day.
She said, “My kids will be at my ex most of the day, so I’ll just be hanging out alone, smoking weed and eating. Wanna come over and smoke & eat with me?”
Now that’s my kind of invitation!
I’ll need to shower, and wash my hair. That’s it for prep. Bringing a cookie tin, and a joint, and some of MY homegrown, not because it’s really any good, but because I grew, for the 1st time except for that one plant in my closet in college, and I’m super happy THAT I can grow now.
Awwww, Monkey hopped up next to me as I was typing all that out, as a perfect reminder of another blessing in my life.
OK, who had COVID-Infected Zombie Minks Rising From The Grave on their lists?
