When I get my period I get the runs. An informal survey showed that this also happens to about 90% of the women I know.
Are these two things related? Is there any proof besides the anecdotal that one will bring on the other? Do other women have these weird conversations with their friends and co-workers?
I’ve always experienced this, and I know that I’ve read before that it’s hormone related, but this is the best reference I can find on short notice:
I know that the word “may” in there isn’t conclusive proof, and I’m sure that there are more concrete cites out there. I’m sure someone will be along shortly that will do a bit better than I have.
Isn’t it great that we girls can bond together over shared body functions? Yes, the same thing happens to me. I hate having a sore stomach, knowing that soon I’m going to be abusing my poor toilet. But I know that I’ll feel so relieved when the plumbing get flushed.
Do the mods sign up to be moderators just so they can peruse these TMI threads?
For me, I only have this problem when my body decides to dump the water weight that I gained just before my period, instead of just using it as a canteen for my body. So, as far as I can tell, my bladder/kidneys just can’t handle it when the flood gates open, and all that water has to go somewhere.
And yes, I have these conversations also… usually they start with “I feel like a dead bloated water buffalo that’s been left out in the sun for a week.”
Essentially, according to them, there are so many hormones doing odd things, a chain reaction can happen. So, hormone X getting over a critial level too fast may tigger Y to happen, and Y can tigger Q. But not always. Geeze, tell us something we can’t find out from studying the symptoms…
Ah, the pitfalls of “let me ask some people who might know.” Which is what I said when this conversation broke out at work.
Of course, I really do know some people who might know. Tomorrow I’ll go back to work and tell them that it is probably hormones. It really is good to know people in the know.
