here in NC we had a GOP sheriff up for re-election and he had an affair with a married woman, he was not married. He still won easily but that is in a liberal area.
Polling has had Cunningham up by around 10 points. There might be some weirdos out there who say “Well, I’ll vote Biden but then vote for Tillis” but it seems exceptionally unlikely that it’s 10% of the voters. I also doubt that 10% of the voters are planning to vote for Cunningham but give a serious shit about “I’m going to kiss you a lot!”
Won’t really know until new polling comes out (and after a week or so gets behind this) but I’m very skeptical.
[Edit: Even if you go back a few weeks, it’s still +7.7 Cunningham and his polling has gotten better since then. So maybe he gets knocked back to his previous lead which is still 5-7 points]
While obviously not helpful, I don’t think this news is going to hurt Cunningham all that much (assuming there are no additional revelations). Frankly, I think the race is pretty much going to be determined by forces beyond the candidates’ control at this point.
It does never cease to amaze me, though, how politicians always think they’re going to get away with this stuff. No matter how many other politicians they see taken down by extramarital revelations, they can always justify to themselves how they’re different.
I think the NC race is a lot tighter than 7-10 points but I don’t think a dumb extramarital flirtation moves the needle much these days unless the object of his attentions wasn’t receptive to them.
Still, there’s a month to go and the United States Senate is within reach. Keep it in your pants ffs.
This.
You’re running for senate as a Democrat in North Carolina. There is no benefit in going for a higher degree of difficulty.
Dems can take the chamber without Cunningham if Greenfield in Iowa comes through. It looks like she has a chance and one of the most recent polls was an extremely favorable D+12 (possibly unbelievably so).
Makes me wanna whop him upside the head… but I still hope he can win.
Not that is matters but John Edwards affair came after he was out of office but while he was running for president in 2008. And of course his wife having cancer made it that much worse. Since she died in 2010 he has a very low profile working as a personal injury lawyer . He went on trial in 2011 for campaign violations related to his mistress but there was a hung jury
I’m not sure if this is true yet, but the story is being broken by the same guy who broke the Cal Cunningham sexting story…
North Carolina Attorney Claims Friend Is NC Democrat’s Second Mistress
North Carolina-based lawyer Erin Brinkman stated on Facebook that her friend has been having an affair with married Democrat North Carolina Senate candidate Cal Cunningham since 2012 and the friend was “devastated” upon finding out that Cunningham is involved in a romantic relationship with another woman named Arlene Guzman Todd, a veteran’s wife.
So his mistress is more upset about the sexting than his wife. Fucking idiot.
Trump fans should like Mr. Cunningham. He’s a playa.
And, as it turns out, a risk-taking moron.
When you’re famous, they just let you do that.
For Christ’s sake. . .
If Cunningham is fucked, the path to 50 is AZ, CO, ME, and IA (while losing AL). Greenfield over Ernst becomes necessary rather than a stretch goal.
The next three ‘easiest’ dem pick ups are MT, GA, SC after that and in that order.
Bollier is even in Kansas.
That’s not true.
Bollier polled even in one poll and ahead in another recently, but the polling average is not even.
guess Cuningham could quit the race if the 2nd story is true but I don’t think anyone who replaced him could win. And ballots are out so I don’t think he can be replaced. 4 term gov . Jim Hunt might win but he’s 83 so he won’t run at that age.
As long as it’s consenting adults, Cunningham should stay in. Consenting adults affairs shouldn’t and don’t really seem to matter much any more. Just stay in – if there’s a big enough blue wave, he’ll win, even if many NC voters are turned off.
You gotta think his campaign manger is asking him, “How many more, Cal? Just give me a ballpark.”
NC Media not reporting 2nd Cunningham affair story yet. Probably waiting for him to confirm or deny it. As I said I don’t think he can drop out since people are already voting absentee. And early voting starts next week.
Yeah but you gotta think that if he was going to deny it he would have done so immediately.
