Uh,.. Spartacus (Starz) is coming to Syfy...

With all the nudity and cussing in that show, how in the hell are they gonna make that work?

I may have to watch at least one episode just for comedic value.

To be honest the show is strong enough to stand on its own merits without the gratuitous sex and violence, but it’s much better with than without.

By Jupiter’s Clock!

My cock rages on!

Batiatus’ best parts were when scheming while getting a BJ or something.

How about Game of Thrones: How House Stark Gained Power and Brought Prosperity and Democracy to Westeros with a Bloodless Coup.

The problem is going to be length. Take out all the gratuitous sex, gratuitous nudity, gratuitous slo-mo violence and gratuitous bizarre swearing, and each episode is like ten minutes long. The only thing left is the scheming, and most of that happened during gratuitous sex/nudity/violence/swearing anyway.

Damn, we loved that show. Half the time it was really good, and the other half it was so bad it was good.

I don’t think they’ll have to edit out any violence.

But the nudity part is going to be difficult.

There are plenty of scenes where Batiatus is having a conversation with his half naked wife while he’s fucking a slave. And those conversations are important. You need to hear those conversations in order to keep abreast of the show.

I think I’m missing something here. Syfy is on cable, right? So why is nudity/cussing an issue?

SyFy is very family-friendly (if you have a very stupid family). No nudity, no swearing, no plot, no acting.

I think some premium cable series film alternate scenes for use when the shows are syndicated. Perhaps that was done for Spartacus? Certainly I’d bet it would be possible to remove the extensive blood spatter from the episodes.

Yeah, cutting these scenes down to momentary glanses will make no sense!

Advertisers, the keeping happy of.

ETA: Broadcast = beholden to FCC
Cable = advertisers. You are allowed to be edgy, e.g. Comedy Central, if you think you can get away with it.
Premium = paying subscribers who maybe want to see that stuff.

It airs at 10PM (on the left coast). Does that make a difference?

I think it might work better with some of the blood and gore cut out. The first episode had less of the splashing blood, which never made any sense to me anyway, so that was a good thing. I’m pretty sure they’ve digitally clothed some of the spectators in the arena. All in all, while I’ll miss the naked boobs I’ll probably enjoy the tamer cable version show just as the original. There are probably other places I can see images of boobs, right?

That was my thought. I believe Sex in the City (…and the city? Can never get that right) shot alternates of all its HBO nude scenes with the people wearing underwear. The TV version of Wedding Crashers had bras digitally added* to all the girls in the early sex montage. I’m sure there’s tons of other examples. It can be done.

(*I heard they were digitally added, it may have been another ‘alternate shot’ thing)

And in the case of SyFy original productions, no budget.

This is Murica! We’d rather show kids a guy getting dismembered with a sword than let them see a topless woman being kissed.

And thus, Spartacus will match other SyFy productions.

I see what you did there.

Thank you! I was starting to worry my humor is wasted on you guys!

I’ve seen some swearing on SyFy imported shows, and carefully posed nudity.
