Um, That Was Strange (Further Law School Admissions Adventures)

The latest bizarro installment, in case anyone is interested.

So way back when I was still filing applications – back when Dinosaurs roamed the earth, or maybe it was just back in December – I began the process of applying to the University of Richmond. As I was completing it, a few things jumped out at me from the applications process that kind of turned me off to the school: they wanted to know where else I’d applied, which I consider obnoxious, the letter from the Dean was mildly snarky in an anti-student way, and there was something else which I forget now. I was having doubts about whether it was really my kind of place.

I filled out the form through LSAC.org, uploaded my docs, but when it crashed my browser partway through the checkout process, I decided it was Fate’s hand and I would just scrap the application. I never paid for the applications, and never paid for a LSDAS report (a packet containing my transcripts and recommendations).

Several months later I got a letter from LSAC indicating I owed them $12 (the cost of a LSDAS report). Huh? I just ignored it since I knew all my current applications were complete. A couple of weeks ago, I decided to file a late application to another school (Hofstra), and was forced to pony up the mysterious $12 in order to complete that process. In that same visit I noticed that next to “University of Richmond” the application status has changed from “saved” to “transmitted.” Triple huh!?

Just now I get a call from some sort of Dean saying my University of Richmond application was “trompled” and for various reasons they are just now getting to it (isn’t that why we have electronic applications? To avoid tromplings?)

I think she’s going to ask me why my application isn’t complete (since I didn’t pay for it) but just when I am about to explain that I changed my mind about applying to UR at all she says “well, we were going to wait list you but now we have an open spot so do you want it?”

Well, since I didn’t even know that I applied, UR is basically at the bottom of my list at the moment – heck its off the list at the moment – and I am completely stumped for a second. Trying to collect my thoughts I say “well, yes I’m interested but I am waiting to hear from some other—”

Before I can explain that financial aid is a big part of my answer and I’d have to know about that, she says “ok we’ll send the wait list letter,” I yelp “thanks for the call” and she hangs up.

Now obviously I should have just asked for a day to think about it and kept my trap shut about other schools, but I was so caught off guard (since I didn’t even apply!) that it just came out.

So now, maybe I made a big mistake since so far that is the only “acceptance” I have received to date. Too late to change it I guess. But the whole experience is just a huge WTF from start to finish.

Current Admissions tally in case anyone’s keeping track:
UC Berkeley: no
UVa: no
Washington & Lee: no
William & Mary: waitlist
U Richmond: waitlist + WTF
UC Davis: still waiting
UC Hastings: still waiting
Hofstra: still waiting
And I say again, WTF!?

My WTF with your post is that you applied to Hofstra  (with that list :smack: )

Actually, my friend and I had this theory, that every law school that we applied to for free (that is, not paying the admission fee) we didn’t get accepted. Between my friend and I, we are 0 for 10. We only applied to schools (for free) that we had no interest of going to.

LOL, yes, it was in a moment of weakness – I got an email offering a free application right after I rec’d rejections from Berkeley & UVa on the same day. “Oh, why not” I thought. I was feeling a bit down about my prospects. My parents would be excited though, they’re in NYC.
