Una: Go Drink a Juicebox

I’m confused. I don’t much care for Una Person anymore, so I wanted to get all excited when I saw her name in this forum, but am I right in understanding that she is being pitted for asking for clarification of some obscure Facebook trend?

Oy vey. I can’t imagine this is actually fun for you anymore, Guns.

Color me befuddled also. If someone isn’t in the know about something, that’s ignorance, not stupidity, and isn’t that very motto of the board, to fight ignorance? I will answer questions on marketing and statistics when I come across them (usually someone else has already done a better job than I could), that are often very basic. I don’t make fun of them for not knowing something they haven’t been exposed to. There’s no shame in ignorance on a topic you haven’t seen before.

Remaining willfully ignorant however, is a form of stupitity, which I don’t think I’ve ever seen from Una. I don’t get this whole train wreck.

Not really, although assorted knuckleheads have followed Shot From Guns’s lead in ragging Una over the question itself. But what Una is actually being pitted for is snarking at SFG in another forum, which SFG believes she did only because of a grudge over being insulted in this one.

Una’s question wasn’t stupid at all, and was immediately addressed by a couple of other dopers with perfectly reasonable responses. Three days later, SFG felt compelled to jump into the thread with her insult-comic shtick and drop this turd:

And she calls that “answering the question”:

Of course, SFG missed the whole point of Una’s question. I don’t doubt for a second that Una recognized the posts she was referring to as jokes (or at least intended as such). She was asking about the nature of the jokes: why did they take the form of bizarre non-sequiturs about AIDS and missing socks? It’s as if I had made a post in LOLspeak and someone asked “What’s with all the weird misspellings in that post?” Replying “It’s a joke, you fool! Don’t you have a sense of humor?” wouldn’t be a very intelligent way to address that question. Nor was SFG’s.

Actually, that’s one of my few skills. No luck at all involved there.

Please do not post entire works on the straightdope. Please review our fair use policy.

Me neither. Una posted something, SFG posted something else, a bunch of people jumped in on it, chaos ensued. That’s all I got out of it.

I was pretty stunned to learn SFG had friends, too.

Oh shut up already, Pollyanna.

I was just surprised to discover she was so well-known, too. I mean, generally I’ve recognised the username as “one of the regular posters” but beyond that- nothing. Didn’t even know SFG was female until this whole thing came along. So not only was I a surprised by the level of vitriol in the thread, I was astonished to learn this is apparently not only par for the course but seen as a positive attribute by so many people.

Like I said, educational.

This is the only thing of value I’ve gotten from this thread. Thanks.

My favorite part of juice in a box is when you get to the very end and you inflate the box and the last bit of juice comes gushing through the straw. It’s fun.

Manufactured outrage can be entertaining, apparently.

she’s cute, female, and plays wow. On the Internet, that’s pretty much the guarenteed friends trifecta. She could be the most evil self centered screeching harpy bitch on the planet and still have hundreds of guys lining up to eat ten pounds of her shit for the chance to kiss her ass.

I feel silly prolonging this thread. (Una has said she was feeling overworked and sick) but for some reason want to offer my take.

In the Cook’s Source thread, people were ragging on the editor of that magazine, who was an exceptionally clear villain: ignorant, unethical and arrogant. She stole copyrighted content from a nice person and then told the person to feel grateful for getting her content edited for free.

But there was a happy ending because it turned into an internet phenomenon. It’s rare to encounter such unambiguously contemptible behavior as the editor’s, and among other punishments, the Cook’s Source website was flooded. Much of that flood consisted of tongue-in-cheek comments about Cook’s Source being evil. (Invented the waterproof teabag indeed.)

Una’s first post in that thread:
What is it with all those idiotic posts over there saying things like “Cooks Source gave AIDS to Africa” and “Cooks Source takes single socks out of your dryer. Now you know.” I don’t do Facebook…is this just random trolling, or are they trying to load up a search engine, or is it just the usual lobotomized dumbasses?
Yes, the question seemed cantankerous and silly, because that form of internet posting is extremely common – including on SDMD. Someone above compared it the series of posts about Chuck Norris.
BUT!!
–It was also the first post in the thread to attack the attackers, who were not at all the bad guys in this controversy.
–It was out-of-the-blue hostile toward people that a lot of posters in the thread thought were at least occasionally clever.
–It was (again) cantankerous and get-off-my-lawnish: “Idiotic!” “Trolling!” “Lobotomized dumbasses!”
I’d say that if Una set herself up for some (mild) snark. Her post’s tone was Pittish, not GQish.

However, the thing that made Una’s behavoir worth a new pit thread is that she went to ATMB and made insults toward Shot From Guns that were clearly referencing the exchange in the Cook’s Source thread.

SFG responded to her there, basically asking What The Fuck? and Una entered Bizarro World by telling SFG that she shouldn’t bring Pit business into ATMB. Which Una herself had just done!

Hence this thread we are now in.

No, that’s pretty clearly not thread shitting. Thread shitting is when you attack the basic premise of a thread. Going into a “Who’s your favorite Harry Potter character?” thread to talk about how much Harry Potter sucks is thread shitting. Since the topic of the ATMB thread wasn’t, “Let’s talk about how wonderful Shot From Guns is,” going in there to say that you’re less than wonderful isn’t thread shitting.

Alright. I just wanted to make sure that you understood that posting in the pit is an opportunity to be an asshole, not an requirement. From your earlier response, it seemed you might not have grasped the distinction.

Seems a pretty narrow definition of threadshitting.

Now go home and get your fuckin’ juicebox.

These two ideas are mutually exclusive.

And yet each has a factual basis.

It’s more: “Attractive, geeky (or sane), and single: choose two.” This holds true more often than some established physics theories.
