Unexpected wisdom in pop culture

Heard a nice one on the last DVD of Excel Saga today:

“Love and loyalty are the same to me!”

“I’d rather have one minute of wonderful than a lifetime of nothing special.”–Steel Magnolias

“Meddle? Of course we should meddle! Always do what you’re best at!”-- Dr. Who

“Even the smallest person can change the world.”–FOTR

“Anyone who tells you that life is fair is trying to sell you something.”–The Princess Bride

“That boy lives in his heart. That’s an awful big place to live.”–Sling Blade

Question: If you could live forever, would you and why?

Answer: I would not live forever, because we should not live forever, because, if we were supposed to live forever, we would live forever, but we cannot live forever, which is why I would not live forever.
~Miss Alabama, 1994 Miss USA pageant.
?Whenever I watch TV and see those poor, starving kids all over the world, I can?t help but cry. I mean, I?d love to be skinny like that, but not with all those flies and death and stuff.?~Mariah Carey

False.

A couple of quotes from Lois McMaster Bujold’s Miles Vorkosigan saga:

I’ve never watched Babylon 5, but Straczynski has a masterful way of hiding philosophical gems in the pudding of popular forms.

If you haven’t already, be sure to check out his radio-play series, City of Dreams.

Samuel Beckett, Your Ride Is Here is brilliant. Hell, they’re all brilliant.

Solichnaya: The Brandon Lee quote you gave is (I think) actually taken from SHELTERING SKY by Paul Bowles. But it’s still good.

“I mean
This is prose
Not poetry
But I want
To be sincere.”

  • Jack Kerouac, “MacDougal Street Blues: Canto Uno.”

Billy Joel, in his song Getting Closer, from his album The Bridge:

Damn misspellings…should be “experience”

I’ve quoted this dialogue on this board before, but it bears repeating (from Unforgiven):

Bill Munny: Hell of a thing, killin’ a man. Take away all he’s got and all he’s ever gonna have.

Schofield Kid: Yeah, well, I guess he had it comin’.

Bill Munny: We all got it comin’, kid.

I tried to post this before, but it apparently didn’t go through.

In one of the later Myth Adventures books (MYTH Inc Link, IIRC), Skeeve explains why he doesn’t like being the boss.

What it boils down to (and I agree, though I understand why others don’t.) is:

a) If things go well, all you get is the guilty feeling of taking credit for someone else’s work.
b) If they don’t you’re left holding the bag even if you’re not actually to blame.

“If you cannot say what you mean, you will never mean what you say” Peter O’Toole in The Last Emporer

Of course I meant The last Emperor

And I even previewed.

“Dyin’ is easy. It’s living that’s hard”

“If you’re going to shoot, don’t talk. Shoot!”

“Yeah, you can live on it but it tastes like shit.”

“But you can’t hold a whole fraternity responsible for the behavior of a few, sick twisted individuals. For if you do, then shouldn’t we blame the whole fraternity system? And if the whole fraternity system is guilty, then isn’t this an indictment of our educational institutions in general? I put it to you, Greg - isn’t this an indictment of our entire American society? Well, you can do whatever you want to us, but we’re not going to sit here and listen to you badmouth the United States of America.”

“Throughout life people will make you mad
Disrespect you and treat you bad
Let God deal with the things they do
Cause hate in your heart will consume you too”

  • Will Smith

“Don’t let the bastards grind you down” - U2

“The god I believe in isn’t short of cash, mister” - U2

If I were to do it properly, I would need to quote the entire book Catch 22 by Joseph Heller, but I’ll try to pick out the best of the best;

Some bits of wisdom that seem to have more immediate pertinence these days:

“There are hardly any excesses of the most crazed psychopath that cannot easily be duplicated by a normal kindly family man who just comes in to work every day and has a job to do.” - Terry Pratchett, Small Gods

“It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone’s fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I’m one of Us. I must be. I’ve certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We’re always one of Us. It’s Them that do the bad things.” - Terry Pratchett, Jingo

“The Spice must flow.” - Frank Herbert, Dune

“Even a used Mercedes still has leather seats.” - Cordelia Chase
