That guy, in the buffalo hat, with the face paint? Apparently he has not eaten in several days – according to his mom, the jail will not give him organic food.
Continuing hijack: the term “daddy-long-legs” refers to different creatures: they could be harvestmen (which, weirdly, aren’t spiders), cellar spiders (which obviously are) or crane flies (which KEEP FLYING AROUND MY GODDAMN KITCHEN god I hate those leggy in-your-face bastards).
But anyway - hey, how about that domestic terrorist attack on American democracy?
As I said in another thread, perhaps he can ask Sheriff Joe to send him a care package of organic vegan free range food. Sheriff Joe is a good friend of Trump, and is known to care about prisoners a lot.
I get what you’re saying. I actually am a huge free speech advocate and I was really reaching to get there.
The thing is that I don’t think that anyone, even the President, should be able to muster a private army on the front lawn of the White House in order to attack Congress. Even if he says he’s only trying to scare them. I’m not being snarky - it’s terrifying, because I saw it happen and it was blindingly obvious that these people were intent on violence, they had weaponry and tactical gear and we had to watch them advance and try to kill Congress and I don’t think they should’ve been allowed to do it but it looks like their Constitutional bases are covered and that probably makes me a hypocrite.
It’s an insult to the Constitution, it’s like he’s using the document to exploit our weaknesses.
In my case, one was more than enough. Trumpist through and through. I would be surprised if he were one of the ones in the Capital. Thankfully the divorce will apparently be finalized soon.
Again, though, IF those bozos had in fact “peacefully and patriotically” marched down Pennsylvania Avenue to the lawn of the Capitol, and stood outside and held up their signs and waved their flags and chanted their chants, I’d have still thought their cause was utterly idiotic and profoundly wrong, but they would have been perfectly within their rights to have done all that. And any attempt to “disperse” them would have been illegal, unconstitutional, and wrong. (Again, I’m talking about some alternate universe where Mike Pence has a goatee, and the MAGA-hat-wearers don’t physically break into the Capitol and kill people and get people killed.)
The problem is that the god-damned President of the United States of America talks like a cheap mobster–“you’ll never take back our country with weakness, you have to show strength, and you have to be strong”, but gosh, he’s not saying anyone should do anything violent or illegal! Why, I can’t imagine where anyone could get that idea, unless, you know, they’ve been watching him ever since he first ran for President (and gleefully called for his supporters to assault people at his rallies).
I suppose it will be hard to prove criminal intent here. (Though Trump is frequently stupid enough that we can’t rule out him either at some point saying something that clearly and unequivocally shows he meant for his supporters to violently storm the Capitol and physically attack members of Congress, or him having left behind some kind of evidentiary trail–e-mails or something–that would demonstrably show that.) I certainly think, between the attack on the Capitol, and the appalling call to my own state’s secretary of state*, that there’s enough to impeach him, even after he’s out of office, and ensure that he can never again “hold and enjoy any Office of honor, Trust or Profit under the United States”.
*And does anybody remember that? Remember when the President of the United States called a high official of one of the states and tried to cajole, browbeat, and threaten him into stealing the election? Granted, that was, like, over a week ago, which in Trump Time is at least several centuries. Part of the man’s appalling success, I think, is the way his scandals and violations of “norms” and lies and criminality are just so endless that a.) he’s such a moving target that it’s hard to keep up and b.) he’s just kind of exhausting.
Which makes me wonder … JEEZUS, just what is he thinking up now to take our minds off this?
Next week will we all be going “ha ha, remember when all we had to worry about was a violent mob egged on by Trump invading the Capitol and trying to find politicians to hang?”
But seriously - did you really think there was a chance in hell that group wasn’t going to erupt in violence? I didn’t. I knew with 100% certainty, that morning, what was going down. I may have only said 90% when I was telling people that, buts that’s just because I didn’t want to sound arrogant. I know Trump’s done a number on this country during his four years of psychological abuse but I’m completely and totally gobsmacked that anyone could have looked at that group and not recognized they were looking at an army that was ready to attack.
If you thought there was a chance that group would not erupt into violence…it’s like you were looking at a boulder starting to roll down a big steep hill and thought to yourself …maybe it will stop by itself. Let’s let it pick up a little speed and see what happens.
I’m not a young woman. I’ve seen protests. I’ve been to protests. I dont remember the right being absolute. I seem to remember it was OK to say “You are free to protest, but you aren’t entitled to protest anywhere you want at anytime you want”. It’s was never an absolute right. Protesters at certain events were confined to specific areas. It was OK to forbid firearms at protests. These kinds of restrictions have always been in place.
But four years of listening to people screaming “Constitution!” every time anyone wants to impose any sort of boundaries on their behavior in the interest of public safety has changed us.
I’m sure, as information comes out, that the GQ answer will be that there were people that were complicit in the attack involved in the permitting process.
ETA—MEBuckner it appears as if I misconstrued the tone of your post, please think of it as general comment, not directed at you
Over the past four years I’ve been thankful for Steven Colbert providing an on-going, mainstream, response to tRump’s transgressions. I needed a nightly catalog of the idiot’s dangerous nonsense, otherwise, the banality of evil might have overwhelmed me.
I would say that a somewhat useful analogy would be for there to be a bunch of people outside of a county clerk’s office, protesting their signing of same sex marriage certificates.
The law is clear that that is what their duty is, and they are not, at this point, trying to get them to change the law, but to violate it instead.
I’m still not sure if a peaceful demonstration that is demanding that others break the law should be considered to be illegal, but I think that that’s where you are going here, that the demand, if followed, would be illegal.
I thought this was worth cross posting. It’s the daily mail unfortunately, but take the hit until another source is available. The FBI has released images of the killer of Officer Sicknick. The accompanying video clearly shows him deliberately aim and throw a fire extinguisher at a group of cops. Unquestionably murder caught right on tape.
As I noted in another thread, the suspect’s hat says CFD. If he’s a firefighter he may be giving Don’t Tread on Me woman a run for most ironic MAGA…(And now for 50 posts discussing the misuse of the word “irony”…)
Hey thanks, Republicans. Fuck off and that thing I can’t mention. One day this country will be rid of you killers, you ignorant bastards. Fuck off.
“Rep. Brad Schneider, a Democrat from Illinois, said Tuesday that he has tested positive for COVID-19 following a lockdown with other members of Congress during the deadly riot at the U.S. Capitol last week.
“Last Wednesday, after narrowly escaping a violent mob incited by the President of the United States to attack the Capitol and its occupants, I was forced to spend several hours in a secure but confined location with dozens of other Members of Congress,” Schneider said."
The way I hear it, Republican killers adversarially refused to wear masks while everyone was locked down together. Seriously, fuck you piece of shit assholes, all of you and every one of you.
