There's a tiny blue button on the bottom of every page and the top of posting pages that says "Smilies".

I guess that means we have banned all burritos from the board.

Hardly likely. About as likely as removing all the pathetic shills from the board.

So, Tuba lied and now Lynn lied. What ARE the odds?
You say that American rescue workers in NYC are cheering “future deaths”? That statement ranks right along side Hanoi Jane’s exclamation “These are a peaceful people”.
I’m sure that denigrating patriotism, the USA in general, and firefighters, police and emergency medical services specifically, is a major pastime for you and your tiny band of left-wing, tree-hugging, whale-saving, bomb-banning, bean-curd nibbling friends.
But do us a favor. Quit worshipping your autographed Karl Marx poster, shut the fuck up and stop breathing oxygen that the rest of America can put to good use.

You know that the military is suspending discharges, right? Including DADT discharges?
You’re not the arbiter of who is or isn’t a decent American.

Sorry, I thought you were talking about the pacifism questions as being your first and second questions. To answer the above, I am not “offended” by people chanting “USA” at a sporting event. I think it’s kind of stupid and that the idea that they own some part of an athlete’s victory by dint of sharing citizenship rather silly, but it doesn’t offend me.

I reject the false idea that there is only one true way to show patriotism. Not wanting more Americans to die in a protracted conflict and exercising my right to dissent is a sign of patriotism.

Sorry, Otto, looks like the European leaders don’t agree with you.

Concensus gentium fallacy. And appeal to authority.
That’s where you slip away from facts and erect a straw man at the expense of your credibility. The target of our wrath, as Bush has stated repeatedly, is not that people of Afghanistan, is not the faith of Islam, but the terror network.
The Taliban, by failing to meet our lawful demands of them, have put their own citizens at tremendous risk.
Sorry, Otto, looks like the European leaders don’t agree with you.

Otto, this is the Pit - I wasn’t debating any issue with you, I was pointing out a fact.
In my opinion, debating you is useless - you live in your own impenetrable fantasy world, and no amount of logic or evidence can induce you to brave the perils of reality.
This opinion may change if you ever show signs of justifying your philosophy based on how the world really works.
Why does Otto have to align his ethical universe with practical utility? Why can’t he be an idealist? You may disagree with him about certain things, but chastising Otto for being unrealistic is missing the point rather badly.
WAH WAH WAH, I FEEL NO EMPATHY FOR YOUR FIREMEN BECAUSE I, QUEEN OTTO, WAS RAISED IN THE WILD BY STARVING WOLVERINES WHO ATE MY LEGS OFF SO I HAD TO CRAWL TO WORK ON MY TONGUE!
EIGHTEEN HOUR DAYS COLLETING BODY PARTS? GODDAMN BUNCH OF SISSIES, BACK IN THE DAY I’D WAKE UP AFTER MY 15 MINUTE DAILY NAP, EAT A HANDFUL OR TWO OF 16 PENNY NAILS (AND NOT THOSE GODDAMN NANCYBOY SINKERS, EITHER! I ATE 16 COMMONS!) AND GO BACK TO CHOPPING DOWN TREES AND DIGGING GRAVES WITH MY TEETH FOR ANOTHER 23 AND A HALF HOURS, FOR WHICH I WAS PAID WITH A BRICK TO THE HEAD!
YOU CANDYASSED WHORES SHOULD BE WORSHIPPING THE FUCKING GROUND MY CROTCH HAIRS FALL ON, YOU ASSBAGGING GRUBS!
Uhhhh…cowcrust? I agree with your overall point (I think), but you might want to take your finger off the caps-lock button. Just some friendly advice; reading that post gave me a headache.
If you know that someone is very, very likely to continue throwing rocks through your window, and you take actions to prevent him from being able to do so, then it is self-defense.
What is so terrible about “retaliation”, anyway? And don’t give me “Because if everyone retaliates, everyone will be dead”, because that doesn’t work in real life.
And neither are you. But you seem to be claiming to be.
But you seem quite willing to pick and choose. Why can’t people show their patriotism by chanting “USA”? You still haven’t shown that. You’ve only provided irrational hyperbole and doublespeak.
I never said it was. Let’s take a look at what I DID say…
Although it is not crystal clear, it should be a simple task for any logical, comprehending person to realize that I was referring my example as more representative of the situation at hand. Your example reduces thousands of innocent deaths as a comparison to someone throwing a brick through a window.
I further question what your idea of “national defense” is, and what we should do about it, but you ignore me. You’ve ignored EVERYONE, and still insist you’re not an asshole.
Depends on the actions you take. Putting screens on your windows, removing the rocks from around your house, even standing in your yard ready to stop the rock-thrower. But going to his house and beating up his neighbor who didn’t have anything to do with it?
“An eye for an eye leaves everyone blind.” Martin Luther King Jr.
What is accomplished by retaliation? Did U.S. retaliation for any previous terrorist action stop this one? Will killing bin Laden stop his followers from avenging his death?
I did not call anyone a bad American for how they did or did not respond to 9/11.
Because I don’t believe that the chants in this instance were about “patriotism.” I believe they were about anticipating the exacting of revenge. Once again, I did not say anyone who chanted was a bad American. I said that I didn’t think it was appropriate (although I said it more harshly). Unlike some of the people here who disagree with me, I am able to separate the action from the person who performed it.
Monster104
And since my analogy was to self-defense, it should have been a simple task for you to realize that when you offer up a “much better analogy” that the analogy you are offering is also to self-defense.
What should we do about this situation? We should treat it like what it was, a criminal act, not like what it isn’t, an act of war.
Obviously, I haven’t ignored everyone. You, for example, I haven’t ignored. I have ignored for the most part the people who offer up nothing but “you’re an enemy of the people, and fuck you” because after an initial response to that I figure anyone who’s interested can refer back to a blanket “fuck you back” as my response. But just to clarify, so that you don’t think I’m leaving anyone out: to anyone and everyone who responded with “fuck you” or some variation on that theme, fuck you too. Happy now?
Otto,
It is not unpatriotic to question the aims of government; in fact, it is often an important duty for citizens to point out that their government is making mistakes. Thoreau, for example, famously spent a night in jail for refusing to pay his poll tax to protest the Mexican War. Mary Beth Tinker sued the Des Moines school district to ensure her right to protest the Vietnam War by wearing a black armband to her high school classes.
However, you are not protesting a war, you are trashing the brave men who have risked their lives to rescue people from the World Trade Center disaster.
You are calling the men who have been pulling body parts from burning rubble “boobs”, simply because they chanted “USA” after their president spoke to them. That was despicable for you to say.
Onece again, the chanters were men and women who had been through hell, had seen unspeakably gruesome sights, and for you to dis them was the height of arrogance.
As for your worries about the bombing of civilians in a fit of mindless revenge, today is the 24th, 13 days after the attack and not one bomb has fallen, not one missile has been launched. Looks like you are 100 percent wrong.
It was Gandhi who said that. True, it doesn’t completely derail your argument or anything, but it kind of annoyed me.
Now, on to the meat of the matter:
You’re damn right we’re not seperating the action from the people. Context is everything in this situation, you boob. Or are you implying that the firefighters who were chanting “USA!” had the exact same motivations as a bunch of drunk guys at a sporting event? Because unless that’s the case, I’ll continue to examine the reasons for the chant, rather than just spouting off a blanket statement.
And as gobear has pointed out, your “inevitable long and bloody war” hasn’t shown any signs of ever happening. Instead, it looks like this’ll be a cool, calculated strike against the perpetrators of the act. You say to treat this situation like a crime? Will-do. We’ll go in, investigate, find Bin Laden, the criminal, and bring him to justice. Whether you’re a fan of capital punishment or not is not the issue.
So, Otto, tell me. Since there’s no war going on, and it doesn’t look like we’re just gonna go ape-shit and start bombing everyone, could it be that the chant of the firefighters was <gasp> just meant to be patriotic and motivational?
Nah. Couldn’t be. That would make too much sense.
cowcrust is my hero. Otto, on the other hand, will continue to defend a terrorist’s right to build nukes up to the point where he sets one off in Otto’s living room.
Uh, no. You have completely failed to understand the point I was making. I’ve tried to explain this and apparently I can’t explain it in a way that makes any sense to you. And that’s fine. Good people can disagree. I would, however, appreciate it if you would refrain from calling me a bad American just because I don’t agree with you. If you are truly right and I am truly wrong then the rightness of your beliefs should suffice without resorting to this fascist demonization.

Apologies for the misattribution. Where I have seen it, it has been attributed to MLK. I shall correct anyone in future who misattributes.
Oh? We’ve stood down the military, have we?
Could you tell that to CNN? They seem to think there is a war. Can’t imagine where they picked up that idea.
Could be, but since context is everything, the context of when they began indicates to me that this was not just “patriotic and motivational.”
Tars Tarkas
Actually, if you bothered to read my posts instead of exercising your tiny mind to come up with this truly pathetic insult, you would have discovered that I am a pacifist. I don’t believe there is a right to build nuclear weapons invested in anyone, be they individual, group or nation.

You’re astounded at my France? I don’t have a France.
Oh, and y’all feel free to trash me to your bitty hearts’ content. I won’t see it. I’ve said what I had to say and tried to explain what I said and why I said it. There’s nothing else really for me to say, and so this thread no longer serves any purpose for me.
