USB/iPod shuffle computer problem

Ok, I bought an iPod shuffle to use while I’m working out (I have a full video iPod, but I’d dropped it a couple of times while exercising, and I don’t want to kill it by doing that). I got it today, hooked it up, let it charge and so forth. BUT, now my computer won’t recognize any USB devices, including the mouse and keyboard - I hooked up my old computer to both test the keyboard/mouse and look for answers. The shuffle does work perfectly when hooked up to the old computer.

When I turn on the new computer, it loads, but I get no response from the mouse or keyboard. When I hook up the shuffle, I get the message that there was a problem with a USB device - this will come up three times, stop, then come up three more times (it’s the little notification bubble that pops up from the task bar), but I continue to get no response from the mouse or keyboard. It’s like that computer is no longer recognizing USB connections. It also doesn’t recognize my full iPod - but with that, I just get no response from the computer.

That machine is running Windows Media Center, the Shuffle is the new one, iTunes 7, and the keyboard and mouse are those that came with the computer. The old computer is running XP Home

I wondered if it was a driver problem - but when I put in the disk to reinstall the drivers, I needed to use the mouse or keyboard to respond to the prompts.

Any ideas that might help would be greatly appreciated.

A WAG might be that the shuffle is trying to take more power from your existing USB port than is available (or you’re trying to connect it to a non-powered port).

Other things to consider/look at:

Do other, non-iPodish USB devices work when connected to the new computer?

Check the Device Mangler at make sure there’s no issues with your USB kit… My XP Pro install has occasionally freaked out and tried to install its own USB-PCI Bridge five or six times over, ending up with multiple entries and causing all manner of Hell.

For the rest of the group, anyone know anything in specific about XP Media Center (which I have been told is neither very centralized nor very friendly to media)?

Here’s my WAG:

  1. Disconnect the USB devices
  2. Go to Start/Settings/Control Panel/System
  3. Click on the Hardware tab
  4. Click on Device Manager
  5. Scroll down to Universal Serial Bus controllers
  6. Look for something similar to “Intel USB 2.0 Enhanced Host Controller”
  7. Select it, right click on it and click on Disable

This will disable the USB 2.0 host controller, forcing all USB devices to work at USB 1.1 speeds. Now disconnect and reconnect the mouse or keyboard and see if they are recognized. If yes, connect iPod and see it it detects it.

If it detects your USB devices after disabling the USB 2.0 host controller, there is an issue with the USB 2.0 controller on the motherboard.

If it still doesn’t work, go back and re-enable the USB 2.0 host controller.

As a professional in the field, I find that many times a flaky USB scenario is caused by a dying power supply. Look for bulging on those caps.

Just something to factor in if no other advice here pans out.

This looks like it could help - but the problem with this is that I can’t get there to check this - without a keyboard or mouse that’s working through the USB connections (I have an old keyboard and mouse, but they have the PS/2 connectors and the new computer doesn’t have PS/2 connections.

Yeah, it’s irritating me. But I hate to go buy a new keyboard and mouse if I doubt they will work with that computer right now.

Whifton_Polekitty, I’ll check that next and see if it helps. It almost feels as if I could get one USB device to work, then perhaps the others would kick back to normal, but that somehow the Shuffle locked things up.

Oh, I did just remember this - yesterday, after the Shuffle was charged, I added songs, let it update fully, then completely forgot to eject it properly before taking it off the connection and going to work out - that is the last I remember the USB ports working properly before things went…odd. I didn’t remove anything from the USB port, just the shuffle from the connector.

An update:

I turned off the power at the surge protector (which I hadn’t done yesterday - just shut down the computers) to switch back from the old computer to the new one, to test the other USB device theory.

Now, everything’s working - I don’t know if it was the full shut down or something else. I haven’t tested the shuffle yet - I’m going to give it a try in a second and see if I freak things out again. If so, I’ll try the full power off thing again to see if that resets it.

Hopefully, I just made the stupid mistake (yes, I know better) of not disconnecting from the power supply before I switched cables and connections.

And the last update - I’m heading to Apple support, because it is definitely something about the Shuffle. I hooked it up, got a message that the USB device couldn’t be recognized - I tried it in a different USB port, and no change - all USB devices were locked up.

But, turning off the power, waiting about a minute and bringing the computer back up fixed the keyboard/mouse again. The full iPod works fine, but the shuffle doesn’t.

Thanks for the suggestions and advice!
