Useful advice you've gotten from the movies

Evil will always triumph because good is dumb.

Don’t waste your time explaining your crime, no matter how proud you are. Just shoot the bastard and be done with it.

Yeah, good luck with that.

Bad writing books and thoughtless English teachers will solemnly tell students to “write what you know” this is why so many mediocre novels are about English professors contemplating adultary.

I figured out what forms in martial arts were for very quickly. But even when I was a black belt in the same school, some of my fellow (rank) students didn’t seem to grasp that the entire point was to learn to put moves together, not some kind of artistry.

Yes, but Stephen isn’t a Jedi.

It’s not so much advice as it is an example;

In “American Beauty”, the protagonist has the opportunity to have sex with an attractive young woman. He decides it’s best that he doesn’t, and both people are shown to be better off for that decision.

Now of course, the alternative in this case was very obviously immoral, but I’d never seen “nah, let’s not do it” as a positive option in a movie before.

Later on, perhaps inspired by this, I’ve made a similar decision (very different circumstances, though), and I’m glad I did.

When you do wax on, wax off, don’t forget to breathe.

In Paris, a Quarter Pounder is called a “Royale with cheese,” because of the metric system.

I don’t know about the second line, but the first is something that Bruce Li really said. It’s not from a movie.

This speech from Roadhouse is basically the truth about being a bouncer in bar, and I read somewhere that it is used in the training of real bouncers and others in related professions (cops dealing with perps, etc.):

“Cut away from yourself, not toward.” Works even better if not taken literally.

From Things You Can Tell Just by Looking at Her:

“Let me tell you about love. You don’t ask, you give.”

Don’t you think everyone remembers their childhood with a certain amount of bitterness and regret?

In what way? :dubious:

“Don’t watch a movie with Nicolas Cage in it.”

Mike: Okay, so what if I don’t want to give up on her?
Rob: You don’t call.
Mike: But you said I don’t call if I wanted to give up on her.
Rob: Right.
Mike: So I don’t call either way?
Rob: Right.
Mike: So what’s the difference?
Rob: There is no difference right now. See, Mike, the only difference between giving up and not giving up is if you take her back when she wants to come back. But you can’t do anything to make her want to come back. In fact, you can only do stuff to make her not want to come back.
Mike: So the only difference is if I forget about her or just pretend to forget about her?
Rob: Right.
Mike: Well that sucks.
Rob: Yeah, it sucks.
Mike: So it’s just like a retroactive decision, then? I mean I could, like, forget about her and then when she comes back make like I just pretended to forget about her?
Rob: Right. Although probably more likely the opposite.
Mike: What do you mean?
Rob: I mean at first you’re going to pretend to forget about her, you’ll not call her, I don’t know, whatever… but then eventually, you really will forget about her.
Mike: Well what if she comes back first?
Rob: Mmm… see, that’s the thing, is somehow they know not to come back until you really forget.
Mike: There’s the rub.
Rob: There’s the rub.

Never go anywhere without a towel.

A life lived in fear is a life half lived.

You mean, beside the statutory rape?

And even if that weren’t the case; Lester is shown not to be attracted to Angela as a person, but just as an attractive piece of meat to fuck. Angela has lost everyone she cared about, and thinks the only way she can get attention is to get fucked.

Those aren’t healthy reasons.

I learned that the best way to treat an unstable person is to put them into a stark environment with a bunch of other unstable people. That was from, uh, oh fuck, that was not a movie, it was several months of my life. Damn.
