Useful advice you've gotten from the movies

“A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky, dangerous animals and you know it.”
The other wisdom nugget I quote frequently doesn’t come from a movie, but from the series ER. I think it’s hilarious that such a cheesy show turned out one of the best tidbits of business advice I’ve ever heard.

Context: George Clooney’s character is talking to someone (an intern maybe?) about how, when he was young, he went to visit his mom at work and noticed she didn’t have a picture of him on her desk. When he asked her why, she told him, “Never confuse where you work with where you live.”

And I always thought that was really great advice for compartmentalizing so you don’t bring your work home and you don’t bring your personal life to work. Because of that, I’ve never kept personal pictures on my desk/in my office. Except maybe a picture of my dog (because all my other coworkers have pictures of their children/grandchildren everywhere).

Never Get Off the Boat!

Almost every one of Tommy Lee Jones’ lines in that film are great:

**Jay: **You know what they say. It’s better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all.

Kay:* Try it. *

Aw, yeah, I love that one too.

I prefer the exchange from the end of that scene.

In other words, the first step in making something amazing happen is believing that it is possible.

“There is more than one prison. I think you carry yours wherever you go.”
-Rogue One

“You say you’re a wild thing, a free spirit…and you’re afraid that someone’s gonna stick you in a cage. Well, BABY, you’re already in that cage! You built it yourself, and it’s not in Tulip, Texas, or bound by Somali-land, it’s where-ever you go! Because no matter where you go, you still end up running into yourself!”
