I was looking at a photo from 1964 and can see a distant billboard. When I enlarge the sign I can see a guy holding up a bottle and the caption reads, “V-C for me”. I can’t see any more detail then that. Any idea what V-C was?
You sure it wasn’t C-V?
No, I can see the large V-C on the bottle clearly. Perhaps a liquor that ended in “Club” or “Canadian”.
Any chance it’s Veuve Clicquot champagne?
That’s what I was going to say
If it wasn’t as early as 1964, I was going to half-seriously suggest a parody 'ad" for the Viet Cong riffing off “C-V for me”.
I don’t think so. Here is a link to an enlargement of the sign:
The guy on the billboard looks a bit like a farmer, and it looks like there’s trees in the background. I googled “V-C farm,” and found a bunch of images like this:
So, it’s V-C Harvest King fertilizer. ![]()
And, this image suggests that the guy in the billboard is holding up a bag of fertilizer, not a bottle:
(The hotlink isn’t working properly, due to a period in the original URL, but if you copy that whole line into a browser window, you’ll be able to see it)
Only works for me if I first quote your post, and then copy and paste. So I’ll just reupload it, so I can show it in the post:
Great detective work. I have never heard of that fertilizer before. I’ll update my comment on the photo site. Dennis
Nice job.
I saw a comment on a Durham NC history website from some guy reminiscing about his dad who worked for Virginia-Carolina Chemicals, makers of V-C Fertilizer. He mentioned his mom always singing their jingle,
It’s V-C for me! It’s V-C for me!
My crops agree–they grow for me see?
It’s V-C for me. It’s V-C for me.
You are most welcome! I saw the picture, and said, “I bet I can figure this out.”
