Vaccine refuser data thread

I’m down the list for getting it. When available I would get it. No side effects for my mom and sister and other people I know. I find they are still hesitant to go out and about, though.

Still think it’s your choice whether to get it. Risk/reward etc. I can understand if you are younger and want children later , to wait and see what develops. Or religious reasons or just because.

Huh? Care to explain this?

I’m old , so if you are in childbearing age, one might worry about fertility as it’s relates to the vaccine. No big anti vaccine conspiracy.

There are are no fertility concerns about the vaccine. No legitimate, authenticated reason to have any concern about future fertility.

I’m just saying that MIGHT be someone’s concern. Some people are cautious about these thing. Who am I to judge?

You’re promoting false concerns. That can negatively influence someone against being vaccinated. At best you’re repeating untruths. Please don’t.

This is meant to be a factual thread. It’s tagged factual. So, if you have any evidence of fertility concerns related to the vaccine, please post it.

I’m not , I didn’t say it, I heard an interview or read it somewhere, so I don’t have a cite. I’m all for vaccines, I was just saying some people might not be. The VP said said she wouldn’t take it under Trump, but did. As did Pres. Biden. I want it , and will get it when I can and promote it to anyone.
Did you read my post? I’m not trying to say it effects anything. I just said I can understand if someone wouldn’t want to take it because…whatever THEIR reason is. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

I’d worry less about being perceived as “judgmental”, and more about people harming themselves and others by falling for nonsense spread by antivax loons.*

*there’s a long and depressing history of similarly baseless claims about vaccines (i.e. for polio) supposedly causing infertility.

This. Plus as far as I’m concerned being judgmental about people spewing nonsense is not only allowed but recommended

I’d have been thrilled if I could have received anti-fertility vaccines.

I’ve been telling all the high school kids that they can fuck without consequence if the get the vaccine. They seem interested.

(at the risk of sounding like I’m piling on… really, I’m not, or at least that isn’t my intent)

I’ve been “fixed”, so am not worried about fertility, but I’d be more worried about infertility as a side effect of COVID-19 than I would be as a side effect of the vaccine. Remember - one of the reasons the Mumps vaccine was developed was because of risk of infertility if you contract mumps as an adult. Granted, we don’t know what the long-term effects of a mrna vaccine are, but they’re almost certainly less severe than the long-term effects of the disease (such as death).

Had not heard that, but the polio vaccine has been around longer than I have. I was in school when there was a huge nationwide push for the MMR - I remember getting shot in the arm with this gun-thinggy, and having the scar on my shoulder for eons.

A polio vaccination campaign in Nigeria was blocked over unfounded fears that the vaccine would cause fertility.

A major flap in Kenya was sparked by an anti-tetanus vaccination campaign by Catholic bishops.

African fearmongering was facilitated by religious leaders and hatred of the evil West. Currently with Covid-19 vaccines, false sterility claims are more of a practical strategy in the antivax toolbox.

Ah, kinda like the “Bill Gates is chipping everyone through the Covid vaccine” CT. Got it.

Doesn’t surprise me that the anti-vaxxers would spread those fears. Their lack of scientific knowledge knows no bounds - “zero” is not a bound because they go negative. Anti-vax = anti-science and anti-knowledge.

Well, I wasn’t expecting test refusers. Is there any indication why he refuses the tests? Financial maybe - fear of being sent home if he tests positive?

Money is no issue - he would still be paid when isolating. He is not the only test refuser and others have given reasons as:

  • They will have to isolate and maybe their family will have to isolate.
  • They’d rather not know
  • They don’t believe tests are accurate
  • We are not taking into account their BAME status

As an individual, I’d tell them (politely and in the right setting) why I think those reason are not right, and in fact, going back to the people who initially refused the vaccine but changed their minds, some told me it was because of what I said to them (ie: that being reasonable, vaccines are safe). It shows reason can work.

As a senior member of staff with responsibilities to the law, they are entitled to refuse and I am also aware of my rolw not to be a persuade people (ie: bullying).

My bosses have asked me if we should refuse to employ such people - especially for the vacancies we have - but that is a minefield.

Thanks - it’s an intriguing story.

I can offer another personal insight from today. The weather has been great, so I bumped into one of my allotment/community garden buddies today. Hadn’t seen her in the last 6 months. Her family is originally from Rwanda - they have a family WhatsApp group, and vaccination is now a banned subject within the group because of the constant arguing. She is happily vaccinated; others within her immediate family are not and will not be (they insist), and she has been abused over her choice to vaccinate.

It’s a mess.

Trump Supporters Turn On Him Over COVID-19 Vaccine In Uncomfortable CNN Segment (yahoo.com)

“Trump is a liberal New Yorker,” one Trump voter declared. “Why would we listen to him either?”

It can even be a side effect of chicken pox, if you are unfortunate enough to have it as an adult. Residua from chicken pox are rare, but exist. When I was an interpreter, and when I was a student at Gallaudet, I met a few people whose deafness was attributed to chicken pox. Apparently, it’s pretty rare for the virus to get into neural tissue, but when it does, it does damage.

In regard to COVID-19, we also do not yet know whether we are going to see babies born to mothers who had asymptomatic infections while pregnant being diagnosed with things like autism, dyspraxia, or hearing and vision problems that might not be apparent at birth.

Part of the problem is “asymptomatic.” I don’t know that we have very good estimates of the number of asymptomatic cases per population, but we can probably assume that the same percentage applies to women who were pregnant in 2020, and early 2021.

We also don’t have enough babies born then who are old enough for issues to become apparent. Autism, even pretty severe autism, is usually not obvious before 1 year, and dyspraxia, mild CP, mild hearing loss, and certain kind of vision problems are also not apparent immediately.
