I’m going to probably not make it. Hubby is leaning towards September for our annual visit, but we haven’t booked anything yet so it’s all still up in the air. I’ll keep an eye on the thread and update you if my situation changes.
I’d like to make it, but I probably won’t know until pretty close to the event if I can or not. So put me on the list, but not on the group hotel list.
I’ll take almost any excuse to go to Vegas, and a DopeFest is up there with the best of excuses.
You ** HAVE ** to come! I want the man responsible for that chicken foot steping out of the car, at my wedding!
I can’t very well pass that up! I promise I’ll do my best to be there. And were the chicken still with us, perhaps I would have given it to you as a wedding present. But alas, he’s gone on to that grocers’ freezer in the sky.
Actually, what we’d REALLY like as a wedding present, is the picture the chicken drew of Professor Moriarity!
Hmm. I’m pretty sure Paul, the actor who played the professor, ended up with that drawing. I seem to remember him coveting it, too. But I’ll ask.
ROOMS
So far I have only received information from these three hotels (I’ve requested information from 12) It’s like pulling teeth.
Anywaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay. . . .
It looks like the Imperial Palace is the least expensive and it is a centralized location on the strip. Please let me know if you are interesting in booking with the block of rooms I will reserve and if so, let me know how many rooms and if you are rooming with anyone. I just need a general idea at how many rooms we need.
Here is some information from the three who have responded so far.
EXCALIBER
We have standard rooms available to arrive October 11, 2002 for 2 nights at
the rate of $129.00 per room for Oct. 11th and $149.00 per room for Oct.
12th plus 9% tax, single or double occupancy. Children 12 years and under
stay free with their paying adult with the existing bedding, however there
is an additional $15 fee per night, per person for guests ages 13 and older.
If you are blocking 10 rooms or more PLEASE CALL OUR GROUP DEPARTMENT @
800933-7733.
There is a +$10 upgrade fee per night for either the room that has the Strip
View on the higher floor, or the Deluxe oversized rooms on the lower floors.
We do require the first night deposit including tax to be charged to your
credit card at the time of booking.

TROPICANA
The only way your group would be booked through this office is if you had a
guarantee of 10 rooms or more per night any less than that you would just
make your reservation through the reservations department. If you did have
10 rooms the rate would be $119 per night and the suite is $219 per night.
If you have any other questions or need any other information please call.

ACTIVITIES
I think it would be nice to have a place for all of us to meet Friday and Saturday nights. Any suggestions?
With soooooooooooooooooooooo many things to do in Vegas I think it would be hard for everyone to hang out together the entire weekend and do the same things. What do you guys think of having a few organized activities? Does anyone want to volunteer to be a tour guide/activity host/mama duck?
These are a few group activities off the top of my head that we could organize if anyone is interested.
Gambling (you can also taking gaming classes).
Clubbing (Studio 54 at the MGM is a BLAST).
It is really hokey, but the medieval dinner at Excaliber is a lot of fun and is cheap compared to a lot of the other shows (I think it is something like $35.00 - I’ll check). The food ain’t great, but it really is a lot of fun.
Hoover Dam. I’ve been before and really enjoyed it, but I don’t want to go this time.
Grand Canyon helicopter tour.
Water park.
Spa treatments. I’ve been to the one at Caesar’s Palace and it was wonderful!
Amusement rides (real and simulated (there are enough on the strip to keep you busy all day)). There is even an indoor sky diving place that looks fun as hell.
Wandering the Strip, watching the free stuff (Mirage Volcano, Bellagio fountain, Excaliber dragon, Treasure Island pirate battle), shopping, bar hopping, Paris Eiffel Tower, canal ride at the Venetian.
Strip clubs.
Anything else?

NOTE TO ZETTE: Are you bringing your baby doll jammies and big foam curlers?
Put ** Mr. Cynical ** and I down for a room at the Imperial.
Don’t forget, we’re getting hitched on Saturday night, so we’d love for everyone to at least go out for a group dinner.
I have to make reservations for a chapel, so I need to know about how many of youse guys would like to show up at the actual nuptials. RSVP to misscreant1107@yahoo.com
I think we’re just going to use the chapel at the IP so Elvis will not be able to officate. (besides, he charges too much!)
Put me down as a “will be there”. Definitely sounds like the Saturday night activity!
Have you checked around with some of the casinos? A lot of them have the cheesy themed weddings that would be kind of fun.
We need to start a second list of people who are looking for a roommate.

Miss and MrC, count me as a sure thing for the wedding. Sounds like that could be one of the best parts of the fest.
Anamorphic, you must come to the fest. I am a film major at UNLV and I want to talk movies and pester you for all sorts of information and advice.
Diane, sorry there isn’t much I can do while I’m not in Vegas (home for the summer) but as soon as I get back, I’ll try to track down more information on cool stuff to do. I’d also be happy to lead mini tour groups around, even though I don’t know Vegas that well myself yet.
And again, I want to ask, no… insist…
no… DEMAND
that all the LA and San Diego and Arizona Dopers make the trip to Vegas. Come on, it’s only a few hours away!
Oh, and anyone that wants to come but is worried about hotel costs: I will most definitely have at least one spot open on my couch, more if you’re willing to sleep on the floor and I’ll only charge you $1/night. Or free, whatever. Best deal in Vegas. Feel free to e-mail.
Great job, Diane… You ROCK!
Tell him Coveting is a sin, and the path to redemption can only be walked by giving up his worldly posessions and renouncing materialism!
Failing that, you must have made more than one, right?
Diane,
OHOHOHOHOHOHOH!!!
I will volunteer for setting up indoor skydiving if anyone is interested. It absolutely rocks. I’ve only done it once but it is a blast.
For those who don’t know what this is, it is a place that has a giant airplane engine mounted on the ground pointing up. After a brief training class they dress you up and you go into a circular padded room and they start up the engine. You lay down on netting over the propeller and they slowly crank the speed up until you are flying 3 or 4 feet above the netting. If you are a newbie they have a trainer that helps steady you. The room is 30 feet high IIRC and the experenced fliers were getting up to the ceiling and doing flips and all kinds of cool stuff.
It is also totally safe and just about anyone can do it. The only limit was a wieght limit. When I went a man and his 7 or 8 year old daughter were with us. The girl had a total blast and she was going all over the place.
Anyway, if those who are interested would email me I’ll see if we can get a group rate.
I will also set up a thrill ride tour if anyone is interested. It would be a great excuse to ‘test’ all the rides I haven’t hit yet.
Slee
GREAT! Thanks guys!
I’m up for most anything. I know my way around Vegas pretty well and don’t mind dragging people around to do the wandering/spa/shopping/see sights thing.
Is anyone interested in seeing shows? Someone has suggested Cirque du Soleil which I hear is fantastic.
Also, what do you think of Friday night supper at the Excaliber dinner show?
Input people, input.
Diane:
Have you gotten my emails? I’m not sure I had the right address
If you want to hit a club there’s one that’s a must-see. It’s in the new Palms casino. (I think it’s on either Flamingo or Tropicana a few blocks off the strip.) The club is called Ghost Bar and it’s way up on the top floor with a panoramic view of the strip and downtown. Part of the club is on an overhang with a glass inset in the floor and you can look down all the way to the ground and freak yourself out, lol. The inside is done in “Austin Powers” groovy freakout style and there’s one of those mini searchlights in the shape of a ghost that floats all around the room - good and weird!
Miss C - I haven’t been able to access my e-mail but I will check again. Did you send it to my buttmail account?
V V - that place sounds great! We’ll have to check it out. I hope you and the hubby can make it.
I would be happy to sit down and talk film with you and give you any advice you want! Do you mind doing it at a blackjack table?
Actually, the only way I would MISS this DopeFest is if I’m working, and I have no way of knowing this far in advance if I will be or not.
I’ll ask him, but in addition to collecting movie props, he also collects sins, so he’s not about to give either up. And more than one? What kind of budget you think we were working with!?
Actually, I haven’t been able to ask Paul yet, as he’s out of town. But I will when he gets back.
I’m totally going to try to go see Wayne Newton. He rocks my world!!!
Zette
yup.
