For it’s peas and spinach. those were absolutely my favorite veggies, but I really don’t like either one them now, ~40 yrs later. Especially spinach, I loved it. I would not have minded if the whole dinner was spinach.
But now, bleeech. I’ll eat raw spinach. But there is no way that i will ever buy a can of spinach and heat it up on the stove. I’ll eat peas now, but I rather not have them.
there are lots of veggies that I disliked as a child, but now find them delicious, like asparagus. I have never liked carrots.
I loved ketchup as a kid but I avoid it now. (Yes, ketchup is a vegetable–Ronald Reagan said so.) My love died when I worked at a fast food joint and the smell of ketchup was everywhere.
I also ate bananas frequently as a child, went almost 30 years without eating one, and now eat about five each week.
Me too with beets! I used to devour canned beets and raw red bell peppers like they were going out of style. So many of my toddler/young child pictures show me with red stains on my face from chowing down on some beets.
At some point in my teens the spell was broken and I will no longer eat either of these foods. Blech.
Cooked carrots. I’m generally not a picky eater at all, and I will eat cooked carrots if I have to (e.g. if they’re in something I am served or otherwise want to eat, or if I’m really hungry and they’re all that’s around). But I definitely do not enjoy them and avoid them if I can. I think it’s mostly the sweetness. Yuck!
Eggplant. I couldn’t get enough of the stuff when I was a kid. Then suddenly, one day, I really really disliked it. I think what might have happened was I misunderstood what I was eating once. My mom used to make the most delicious eggplant parmigiana, and she also made veal parm, chicken parm, etc from time to time.
One night I saw her putting dinner on the table and it looked to me like it was veal parm, so that’s what I was expecting when I put the first bite in my mouth. As a result I was a little squicked- “what’s this???” oh… eggplant. OK."
But since I was expecting veal, I didn’t enjoy the eggplant, and I don’t think I’ve been able to enjoy it ever since. I actually haven’t tried it in about 20 years.
I still love bananas but I have a horrible time digesting them, so I just avoid them.
I don’t care for peas much anymore. I’m far more picky about tomatoes. I’ve just about had it with lettuce, especially iceburg. Some other kinds are OK in the right dishes. I never eat wax beans anymore.
As a child my mom claims I adored mashed bananas. Fast foward years later and I proclaim loudly that the only fruits I loathe are “apples and bananas” (I now like only Pink Lady apples).
But I recently tried to eat bananas again - so cheap and healthy, why not. For three days I ate a banana with lunch and I was queasy - and once I actually puked! Never again.
Way back when, my mom made brussels sprouts well. It happened once, and I think it was probably on accident. At the time, I thought they were absolutely the most delicious vegetable on the planet. Then reality set in, she made them the way she usually did and, lo and behold, they were now the most digusting vegetable on the planet. Damn shame, too - I hear they’re good, but the very thought of them makes me shudder.
Raw celery. I used to try to sneak it as a late night snack when I was a toddler. Celery with cheese, or with peanut butter. Now, even when I try to eat it, it just about makes me gag.
When I was a kid, I’d sit down and plow through three or four oranges at a time. I still like them fine, in a salad or yogurt or whatever, but it’d be pretty unlikely for me to just grab one and eat it for its own sake.
Ohh I forgot about Brussel Sprouts. I liked them as a kid. they are vile now.
Growing up in the Northeast, Mom used to go pick “fiddleheads” and cook them as the dinner veggie. I thought they were worst things I would ever put in my mouth. As an adult, I would be willing to try them again.
