Veronica Mars 12/7/05

sowill Veronica keep her promise to Meg? and did she just die from her injuries, or did her Mom suffocate her because of how she wanted to raise the baby?
at least Wallace is okay
and gee! there’s a real human being inside Logan after all

Do we need spoiler bioxes? Last nights Lost was a rerun so maybe people have seen the whol episode. I reand on AICN that Wallace would be on, i kept waiting for him to show up.
All I can say is VM already has a lot on her plate, and doing the spoilerbox is nontrivial even without other distractions.

ok - here is what i said

i meant

Oh, there’s always been a real human being inside of Logan. Given his background and experiences, the kid is as fine a human being as could be expected.
The kid has a lot of rage, caused by being a beaten child, betrayal by just about everyone, and, of course, his girlfriend’s murder. That combines with the fact that he thinks before he acts, and you’ve got a pretty consistent and well-written character.

unrelated to the episode’s plot: last night I dreamed I ran into Enrico Colatoni at some social function somewhere and we had a lovely conversation about his role in Galaxy Quest

i did not mean to quote my OP there (damn hamsters)

They said Meg died from a blood clot, which seems pretty straightforward but might not be. Duncan needs to use his family’s money to crush Meg’s parents’ lawyers and get that baby away from them. I cannot emphasize that enough.

Wallace! I didn’t know he was going to show up, so that was cool.

Looks like they’re opening the door to Veronica staying in Neptune for college next year.

Wow, that was one tainted jury. The guys they convicted will win on appeal **instantly ** if even one of the jurors talks to someone about what went on in there, what with the jury foreperson doing her own investigation, getting help from her PI/ex-sheriff dad, etc.

Lamb’s whole sweaty shirtless workout scene was mega-creepy. Where are they going with that character? I mean that in a good way; I can’t wait to see what they’re building up to with him. He’s corrupt, he’s slimy, he’s buff, he has a mad-on for Meg’s parents…that’s an interesting bag of character notes.

Yay, Wallace is back! I read that only 3 of the cast members were signed for 22 episodes, so that’s why he had to stay gone for a while.

I thought after last week’s episode that Duncan wasn’t the father. I still think that even though he accepted it. Maybe Duncan promised Meg that he’d keep the real identity of the father a secret? Or he really is the baby daddy.

So I guess Veronica will stay in Neptune next year? I feel bad for her since she wants to get away from there, but of course that’s a problem all high school shows have when their characters graduate.

How are the ratings for this show? Is it likely to get renewed for next year?

and isn’t convenient that all these fictious CA towns just happen to have univrsities in or near them?

You can’t throw a rock without hitting a college in Texas, so maybe that’s not totally unrealistic. It’s not like they live in a tiny village of 300 people.

The ratings for the show aren’t stellar, but they’re decent and they’re up from last year. It usually beats whatever’s on WB in that same slot (is it One Tree Hill?). The show is one of UPN’s highest-rated, and putting it in the slot after America’s Next Top Model is good on one hand because I believe that’s the #1 show on UPN, but bad because it’s up against Lost. If you don’t have TiVo, you might have to pick between them and I bet most people who watch VM also watch Lost. Rob Thomas seems to be cautiously optimistic about their chances of being renewed for a third season.

The population centers of California are lousy with universities and colleges. There has to be way over 100 schools in the state, so it’s not that out there that Neptune has a nearby campus. I mean, she’s on the coast–it’s not like she’s up in Alturas or some such place.

I didn’t catch the name of this supposed school. Did that woman say it was an (alleged) state university (UC or Cal State), or is this supposed to be just some private college? Either way, it makes sense that Veronica would have a hometown school.

She called the college “Hurst” (or maybe Hearst).

I’m thinking H-E-A-R-S-T since **WRH ** was a known for endowing universities (among a myriad of other things)

That’s right, Hearst. Good ears. That’s funny, because to me Hearst implies more northern Cal, or at least central coast–i.e., San Simeon area–but the “Balboa County” on the sherriff uniforms says northern San Diego area all the way. Maybe they should have gone with Scripps. Not that it’s a big deal in the grand scheme of things.

On other matters: now that we’ve seen Logan both have a moment of human feeling, and get the tar beaten out of him…I think I still prefer seeing him get beat down. Sorry, but the boy just brings out the barbarian in me.

I really enjoyed this episode. As soon as Veronica gets called for jury duty, I was thinking 12 Angry Men. I didn’t realize it would be such a direct parallel/homage!

[ul]
[li]Starting with a 1-11 vote[/li][li]That person says they’ll change their vote (to acquit in this case, to convict in 12 Angry Men) if no one else has changed their mind[/li][li]Independent investigations being conducted (VM finding out about the football injury, Henry Fonda finding the switch blade)[/li][li]The lone holdout delivering a racist rant right before breaking down and switching his vote[/li][/ul]

All in all, a fun episode. And Wallace is back!

Did you notice the episode title was “One Angry Veronica”?

Obviously last week’s alternate ending had no bearing on this week’s episode. Would it have if it had gotten more votes than the original ending? Was there a different episode on tape somewhere to air if the results had been different?

And…
killing off Meg-- that’s sort of a cop-out for Duncan and Veronica’s relationship, unless there turns out to be more to her death than meets the eye.

Also, I find it sort of unlikely that a sensitive guy like Duncan could deal with the pretend baby last week without seeming sort of sad and/or pre-occupied, thinking about his actual child. And when did he find out about the baby? It’s sort of slimy of him to dump Meg and go after Veronica (without telling Veronica what she’s getting herself into) if he already knew about the pregnancy.

I think that Sherriff Lamm will intervene to prevent Meg’s parents from taking custody of the baby.

Every single TV show must have a 12 Angry Men episode. It’s become a standard trope. As soon as she got handed the jury duty notice, I could easily predict the entire rest of that story line. Still, it was nicely done, and at least it fit in with VM better than it does with most series.

It was in the letter he stole from Meg’s air vent when they went looking for the stuff about the child abuse.

I have this thing for believable bad guys. If they are well written, it’s very interesting to follow their trajectory to see how things turn out. Many times it’s more interesting than following the protagonist, who almost always have a predertemined fate in store.
They’re fleshing out Lamb and from being just someone who got Keith’s job and is being an asshole, he’s turning out to be a very interesting character. Having him work out while talking to Keith made it even more interesting.
As for Duncan, who isn’t really the bad guy in all of this, the change started last year and he’s getting more and more complex, alive and believable. HE’s one of the 3-5 most interesting characters on tv right now (Locke and Mr. Eko from Lost taking the top spots).
