Veronica finally discovers the identity of the bus crash culprit, but is again put in danger as she tries to warn others.
I’m excited to find out Who Dunit. And I really hope this comes back again in the fall!
Minor spoiler-- My local paper said that the resolution of this mystery ties in with last season’s mystery, so I predict that it will have to do with Aaron and Curly in the end, but neither will actually have triggered the bomb.
I REALLY hope tonight’s episode isn’t pre-empted by basketball in my area the way the last 2 eisodes have been. I can’t wait until Sunday to see it! Okay, I can. but I’d rather not. I’m pretty spoiled.
Except, I have to call bullshit on one part of it. That Hart person, who we saw last week for what I thought was the first time (but according to TWoP was seen at least once before but I certainly don’t remember it), ended up being kind of key to the solution and that was way too much out of nowhere for my tastes.
But damn, nice wrap-up on the Duncan/Lilly/Aaron business. Didn’t see that coming. Did Kendall leave the room before or was she in the bathroom or something? I wasn’t clear.
Nice resolution for Wallace and Jackie too.
The resumption of the VM/Logan relationship seems a little forced. I realize that they’re epic and all, but I felt like there needed to be another scene there for a little transition. Although once you’ve bonded over a psycho kid plunging to his death off a roof in front of you, maybe the transition is implied.
Wow, the writers certainly managed to surprise me. Not that I had any idea who sent the bus off the cliff. The Beav and Mac were so cute in last week’s episode! Now she’s going to be scarred for life.
What the hell was in that suitcase at the end? Has this show been renewed yet?
Holy crap! They really had me going there. I thought Keith was dead and I thought that would be a horrible misstep. I’m glad it wasn’t true. I nearly burst into tears when he showed up. Holy crap.
And I’m glad Beaver got the chance to blow up Woody, which he should have done in the first place instead of the bus. And I’m glad that my detective skills are decent, since I pieced a lot of the resolution together last week.
Hart was the kid who took the video of Lynn Echolls jumping off the bridge last year. He caught it while making one of his movies. I remembered him.
I think the scene that said a lot about the quick progress of Veronica and Logan’s rlationship over that night was the shot of her sleeping in his lap, just totally exhausted. It implied a lot of conversation and bonding that didn’t have to be seen; a picture is worth a thousand words. They’ll still have plenty of problems, but maybe they can work them out. In that situation, with Logan helping save Veronica and her believing Keith was dead on top of everything else, I can totally buy that they’d cling to each other in that moment and be willing to let some other baggage slide.
I love, love, llllllllooooooooovvvvveee this show. It’s one of those rare shows that surprises me, yet doesn’t feel forced. Needless to say, neither me nor my wife saw the revelation of this season’s bad guy coming, but it made a fair amount of sense. Which was nice. But I was pissed because I spent the whole season rooting for the bad guy.
I was convinced that Mr. Echols and Charisma Carpenter were going to be set up as the bad guys for next season, but was once again, happily surprised when Duncan came through with the street justice.
I also loved the (hopefully) resolution of the Wallace/Jackie thang, that could both free Wallace for next year, and get rid of a character I didn’t much care for.
I am firmly convinced that, because it is an intelligent, well-written, and interesting show, it has no chance of being renewed for next season. God, I hate television…
Man, Beaver went from Dorky Nice-Guy to Evil Mastermind in about 2.5 seconds. Poor Mac, she’s going to have issues now.
Aaron Echolls deserved what he got, that smug bastard.
I think the writers found just the right combination of genuine clues and red herrings to keep the watchers speculating all season and still deliver a surprising finale that makes sense in hindsight. The show’s had two excellent seasons – let’s hope for at least one more.
My biggest complaint is that Keith’s “death” was a little contrived. The minute Veronica couldn’t reach him on the cell I knew he wasn’t on the plane.
Here’s how I would’ve written it:
*
Veronica calls her dad and he picks up, but there’s a lot of static and she can’t hear him. Cut to a shot of Keith on a plane, trying to make out what Veronica’s saying. Finally he gives up and says something touching, like “I’ll see you soon, honey”, and hangs up. Cut to Veronica and Beaver on the rooftop. Beaver detonates the bomb and we see the plane explode just as the Veronica’s phone disconnects and she screams. (Of course we find out later that Keith simply took another charter flight home ).
Later, Veronica and Logan tune into the news and see a report on the explosion, and Keith Mars is mistakenly claimed as one of the victims. Much crying ensues. Then, at the last minute, Keith arrives home and says something charming, like “rumors of my death have been greatly exaggerated”, and explains why he’s still alive.
*
Oh well, it still worked. I was only 80% sure he wasn’t dead. And I still felt like cheering when he showed up.
Dennis, I don’t know. If they’d handled the phone call to Keith your way, I would have been pretty pissed about the fake out. Showing Keith on a plane, but oh, it’s just some other charter plane? Bleh.
Overall, I think that while Beav turned out to be a great villain, the rooftop confrontation needed something more. I was thinking back to the season one fight with Aaron - car crashes! People on fire! The saving grace this time (and maybe this was the point) was showcasing Kristen Bell’s acting. Man, she’s good. When she figured out that Beaver really did rape her and screamed it at him, she just broke my heart. (I’m spoilboxing that because if you haven’t seen the episode yet, you really really don’t want that bit spoiled. Also, get out of this thread and go watch it already!)
I have to say, I really miss all the voiceovers Veronica used to do. I would have loved to hear one when Weevil was being taken away at graduation.
I’m also glad Haaron is dead. But also glad that he got one last menace in. I’ve never been so afraid of a wine bottle.
I have a question since I already deleted the episode from my TiVo: Sheriff Lamb wasn’t on the plane that blew up, right? He never actually went to the scene? I know he’s the one who insisted Keith be removed from the plane (in hindsight, yay Lamb!) but was he actually there? I can’t remember.
Lamb wasn’t there. I think he was going to meet the plane when it landed.
That episode did not disappoint. I thought nothing would be shocking. I knew someone you get nailed for the bus crash and I knew Aaron would be unlikely to live to the end of the episode, but I was truly shocked by the Duncan thing. And I sure didn’t see the rape story form season 1 coming back.
I didn’t think Lamb was there, but these are the things that occurred to me while I was falling asleep last night. And I have another one: did Terrence Cook really think Jackie was going to Paris? In last week’s episode, after he realized he was going to be the indentured servant of the casino owner, he told her she should just go ahead and go. But she wasn’t going to the Sorbonne in the first place, and wouldn’t Terrence have known that? Surely he’s aware that his daughter’s mother is a Brooklyn diner waitress.
That’s funny, I wasn’t really happy with the “oh, I wasn’t raped after all” resolution in season one, so I was glad it was revisited.
I thought it might be fun, since the show is noir, to list some of the excellent nods to the genre here:
First and foremost, the zoom in, dolly back on Veronica when she she’s who was “Not Pictured.” Directly out of Vertigo - you know Rob Thomas has been waiting for the right time to put that one in. Most of the other camera work I’d have to look at again, but this one popped right out.
The villain setting up a patsy (Curly Moran) to take the fall (and die), distracting the investigation (calling The Big Sleep, among others)
Beaver as the villain. No one is ever just black and white in noir, especially characters you like. Hmm, I wonder if we could discuss Beaver as a fractured homme fatale, since his villany is tied up with his sexuality. (The start of the blackmail scheme, Shelley Pomroy’s party, and don’t forget, he and Mac first sarted getting close when he was using her to set his real estate/blackmail scheme.)
