I was a little disappointed in the movie but I’m all in for the new season. Looking forward to discussing it with any fellow marshmallows out there.
They released this a week early–available now.
Oh, wow! Thanks!
I know what I’ll be binge watching tomorrow…wearing my “I Saved Veronica Mars” t-shirt, of course
Oooh, sweet! I knew there was a reason my 12 week snooze on my Hulu account ran out last week. Yeah, tomorrow I have a date with the couch.
For those of us in Canada-
It’s… difficult… to get Hulu here in Canada, but Veronica Mars seasons 1-4 is on Crave. I’m glad, 'cause I really wasn’t looking forward to having to set up a VPN and sign up for Hulu again.
Well, as a long time fan, I have to say it was most enjoyable to spend the weekend with the old Neptune gang. It wasn’t perfect and the “shocking” twist at the end was a bit of a downer, but overall I thought the new season was a worthy addition to the VM oeuvre. Lots of great dialogue; one of my favorite exchanges was between Veronica and her dad when he visits unexpectedly.
“What’s with the drop in? I could’ve been having sex!”
“You’re not married.”
As someone who never watched VM before, but also as someone who is always looking for a good show to stream/binge, can y’all fill me in a bit?
I don’t want to totally hijack the thread, but perhaps for us latecomers, maybe you could give us a summary:
What’s the premise? What makes it so good? Why is it a big deal that there’s now a season 4? What’s with the movie? Are there any shows it’s comparable to?
(And I know there are probably a shit-ton of things on the web that I could Google on this, but I come here for a reason; I don’t want a shit-ton of info, I want the *SDMB’s *skinny on this show, or at least good info that someone from the SDMB could point me to. TIA!).
Think of it as a 21st century Nancy Drew crossed with “Scenes from the Class Struggle” and you’re getting there. Add snappy dialog and a great father/daughter dynamic and you’re almost there. Now add some great character studies and you’re pulling into the parking space. The first two seasons are the best. (Personal opinion, the “mystery” of Season 2 is better than that of Season 1).
Season 3 suffered from the dreaded “network interference” but was still OK.
The movie I haven’t seen lately, but enough time had passed that it was like seeing some old friends.
Ditto season 4.
I’m three episodes in and I have to say, it’s great to see this show back. it really feels like the show, too, not just a forced attempt to drag out another old show/movie and try again.
I won’t post any spoilers, but the core story is great and I absolutely am loving seeing Keith and Veronica on screen together again…
Binged the whole season today. I know one of the arguments in favor of the shorter seasons you get with streaming shows is that all the filler episodes are cut out, but this is one case where I really wish we had got a 22-26 episode season, even if 3/4ths were filler.
We finished the season today. Absolutely loved it. I think it equaled seasons 1 and 2 of the original show and was better than season 3.
I will spoilerbox some thoughts and questions:
Big Dick did arrange the first bombing, then? Patton Oswalt did the bombs after that?
I hated that Logan died. I do not think they left that open in any way to interpretation. I’m kind of surprised they went that way with it. That will definitely make the final moments of the season divisive for most people. I did not like it, but I don’t think it sinks the whole season.
I would give the season an 8 out of 10. Loved it.
Thanks, we’ve begun S1.
In the articles I’ve read, Rob Thomas, if he has the chance to continue, wants to go in a more *noir *direction, and noir doesn’t work well with a happy protagonist at its core. (Kind of reminiscent of Bosch’s ex-wife getting killed in S4)
I watched VM so long ago that I pretty much forget all of it. Do I need to go back and rewatch the old seasons or can I start fresh with Season 4?
Either way. It has references to to the older seasons, but they did a really good job not just making it all references with no new content or characters.
One person I think goes almost entirely unmentioned is Duncan Kane. Yes, they mention Lilly. They even mention Jake Kane. But Veronica’s first love interest? Barely a name check. Even Piz gets one or two name drops.
Pizza guy’s final day machinations were way too Xanatos gambit for my taste, but in general I liked it and it was good to be back. I don’t remember much about the film but I remember not being that happy with it. This felt like a real return to Neptune.
I’m not good with faces and I lost track a bit, who was the guy who shot the congressman? Was he one of the guys the Mexicans were supposed to shoot, and if so why wasn’t he dead? If not was he a member of the same family?
The Maloof family were the congressman’s family. Maloof little brother was engaged to a girl with … unsavory family. The surviving unsavory family member (the Mexican duo got one by Rep Maloof’s orders, but not directly to do with the bombing) shot Rep Maloof and was taken out by Clarence. He escaped Estupido y Mas Estupido and that’s why he wasn’t dead.
OK, so there was the video of both the brothers being shot about 6 times. Was that staged or did he somehow survive that?
