Versamail/gmail problem: can't send mail

I just got a treo 650, and the good people at verizon included versamail as part of the software that comes free with the phone. So I try to set up versamail to download my gmail account and am very happy for a few days checking my email on my phone…until I recieved mail that I had to respond to right away. I can’t get the damn thing to connect to the smtp server!

Incomeing mail works just fine, but I can’t figure out why I can’t send anything, I am following the directions on the gmail site to the letter, and have even experamented with other settings, but nothing I try seems to be working. I can’t even figure out if the problem is with versamail or gmail.

Anyone have any experiance with using these programs together?

See if this helps:

  1. Make sure you are connected to the Internet by first going to Web and browsing to www.google.com
  2. Login to Gmail on your PC
  3. Go to Settings
  4. Go to Forwarding and POP
  5. Change status to Enable POP, if not already enabled
  6. Make sure you click on Save Changes
  7. Go to Versamail on the Treo 650
  8. Go to Menu/Accounts/Account Setup
  9. Click on New (delete any old or non-working account)
  10. Enter any name for Account Name
  11. Mail Service select Other
  12. Select Protocol POP
  13. Click Next
  14. Username enter NAF1138@gmail.com (or your complete gmail address)
  15. Password enter Password (make sure this same password works on your PC)
  16. Click Ok
  17. Click Next
  18. Email address enter NAF1138@gmail.com (it should already be entered)
  19. Incoming Mail Server enter pop.gmail.com
  20. Outgoing Mail Server enter smtp.gmail.com
  21. Click Next
  22. Click Advanced
  23. Incoming Server Settings, enter Port Number 995
  24. Select “Use Secure Connection (SSL)”
  25. Click Next
  26. Outgoing Server Settings, enter Port Number 465
  27. Select both SSL and ESMTP options
  28. Click Done
  29. Click Get

You should see:

Connecting to Mail Server
Checking for Mail
Getting Mail
Closing

If it is not successful, you should see an error. Type the error here and I’ll try to help.

Worst case: you can connect to gmail from the Web browser at http://m.gmail.com

Just tried sending on my Treo 650:

It gets stuck at Sending and then says “Could not connect to SMTP server”

Change the Outgoing SMTP Server Port number from 465 to 587 (refer to step 25 above). It worked for me after I made this change. 465 may be temporarily down.
