I’m doing some freelance graphic design, and I want a vintage look: ink drawing, woodcuts, etc. Old advertisementsm illustrations from old instruction manuals, old greeting cards, etc.
I used to have a bunch of sites bookmarked for that kind of thing, but (long story) I no longer have those bookmarks. And I’m just not finding anything good via google.
Anyone else collect some images? Anyone have favorite such sites?
Dover Publishing has a huge trove of copyright-free images of the sort you are looking for. Problem is, you have to buy the books or the CD-ROM, though they may have a online store by now. If you do a lot of this sort of thing, it’s worth the investment.
Dover is the best source for vintage art in a wide variety of categories.
You can also hit the used book stores and buy up some pre-1924 magazines, books, instruction manuals, etc. You’re less likely to choose a piece that someone else is using.
Yet another choice is to find an old codger who can whip up that style drawing to suit your needs.
