VR: How to best setup lighthouses for a good VR experience?

Just as coronavirus was starting to send people home I decided now would be a good time to buy a VR headset. I have always wanted one (since before they even existed) and the new ones seemed pretty good with many of the bugs worked out.

Seems I was not the only one with that idea and I only just got my email that it is shipping.

My question is how to best setup the light stations (two little boxes that send laser pulses into the room to track the headset and controllers).

I am willing to buy stands for them (rather than mount them to a wall) so I can position almost anywhere.

But I have looked and not found anywhere that says whether they can be below head level, at head level or must be above head level.

Nothing that says whether both units need to be on one side (i.e. the “top” of the box) or should be diagonal from each other.

Nothing that says they should be separated no less than X-feet and no more than Y-feet. How bad is it if I have art on the wall (with glass covering the art)? Do I have to take that down?

And so on…probably some things I have not thought of.

Note, I can do “whole room” VR. While not a huge space to move in it is more than sufficient (maybe 7’ x 7’ (ish)).

Thanks in advance for any advice.

FWIW, I have the two sensors which came with my Rift at chest level while sitting with a third over my head (or right at the back of my head when I stand). The only stands are the ones they came with; I have the third on a countertop cupboard.

The software which comes with your headset & sensors will guide you how far apart to place them when you do the initial set up.

Can the two lighthouses be at different heights or do they have to be at the same height?

My front pair are at different heights due to not having enough open space on my desk for both. The left one is atop a filing cabinet and about 4" lower than the right.

If you’re curious about how your computer will handle VR, Steam has a free bit of software for that.

Thanks.

My stuff has arrived. The experience is pretty amazing. Even a little overwhelming at first.

I have a lot of noodling around right now to get it setup as I like. Waaaay too many cords taking up valuable spots on the PC and power strips. They really need to streamline that stuff.

They did, and are. I think the oculus quest is a very good compromise. It is stand alone or you can connect it via one cable to a PC and it’s surprisingly hi-fi. I’m really looking forward to their next iteration where I hope they fix the comfort, sensors for handtracking and remove some of the Facebook limitations.
