Waffles vs. Pancakes

Crêpes, crespella, blintzes, blinis, Swedish pancakes, and the traditional American flapjack are all superior dishes. Waffles have their place, but to claim superiority over pancakes is just silly.

Pancakes, by a large margin. With butter and real maple syrup, or warm fruit compote. Mmmm.

Pancakes, but I am not even terribly fond of them. I vastly prefer crepes.

Ha! Seriously, though, I like both a lot, and am far more likely to make pancakes since that’s easier to do, but if I had to choose between eating one or the other every morning for a month, oh, it’s waffle time.

Why would you choose just one??

I have recipes that I love for both and some days are waffle days and some are pancake days. And then there are the various types of pancakes. (Including potato, which are popular in my family.) I consider crepes to be in the pancake category.

You know what else is good? Start out like you’re making french toast with nice thick bread, but cook it in the waffle iron. Yummy interstices! (Also, I’ve only ever tried Chopper 9760’s PB & Syrup combo on french toast. Worth checking out.)

You know what else is good? Breadcakes.

Make the pancake batter a good bit thin with too much milk, add an extra egg, and then throw in enough cubed bread to make a thick batter. Grill the breadcakes until brown on both sides and cooked in the middle.

I picked pancakes, although the best waffle beats the best pancake. I only know of a couple of diners in NNJ where this is true, though.

I’m going to throw a wrench in the works and say French Toast.

Eggos. Peanut butter. Glass of milk. Sometimes I feel like syrup instead of peanut butter. Either way, delicious!

Pancakes for sure. Buttermilk pancakes with butter only, unbesmirched by the excessive sweetness imparted by syrups and fruit.
