Walz & Vance Debate Follow-Along -- Tue, Oct 1, 2024, 8:00 PM CDT

Ah. Thanks for info (even though it’s info that’s unpleasant to know.)

Pizza for everybody, camera crew and floorcleaners included?

I thought he did point that out.

I think appearance matters in terms of which one looks more likable and like someone you’d be comfortable with. Walz has that Uncle Tim look that’s pretty appealing.

I think that Vance “won” in the way that these things are usually measured – he came off smoother and more at ease than Walz, and he didn’t seem “weird.” I don’t think it changes anything, though, because Vice Presidential debates have zero impact on voters.

Good to hear. Just something any American might do after an event.

Any idea what Vance is doing? On the phone to Trump, and getting ripped a new one?

Moderating:

You changed the accurate quote below:

to read that @psychobunny said Vance is a much better Senator.

It’s a very stern rule here to not change someone’s quote within a quote box. You’ve been here long enough to know not to do this. It’s a warnable offense, and I personally won’t give you another break on this. Never do this again.

I didn’t change anything. Was that post edited?

That’s a fair point. I’ll reverse the mod note if it’s determined that the OP edited her post to change it, with an apology to you for making a false accusation.

Someone has stepped forward and shared that they watched the post as it was edited. Mod note reversed with my apologies to you for not having done my homework.

It was a lovely debate, there can be no doubt.
:v:

And extremely long hair.

I do believe she was talking about the 6 hostages killed in Gaza.

Thanks for being kind. It’s late; I’m tired. Not an excuse, just an explanation.

I don’t want to give Vance too much credit, but man, he made Donald Trump look even worse. And that’s sayin something.

For some reason Vance reminds me of one of the kings in a deck of playing cards.

I didn’t see the full debate. I saw enough to know it won’t change many minds or votes. I thought it was pretty even, a bit tedious, not very memorable.

This needs to be repeated, loud and everywhere, so we can watch Cheato’s head explode

JD Vance runs for president—as a Democrat.

What a weird debate! Yeah, Vance was better than Walz in the delivery department. That said, half the time Vance seemed to be agreeing with Walz or delivering Democrat talking points of his own.

Both of the actual presidential candidates seemed to disappear in this debate. Trump disappeared because Vance seemed to be running for president himself. Harris also disappeared, albeit less, simply because Walz, while subordinate to her, was not particularly skilled in making her feel present.

Vance is a political talent who has screwed himself by hitching his wagon to Trump. I don’t think he’s a fundamentally evil person, and in the debate he didn’t seem to have any real passion for either Trump or what remains of the GOP. As others have said above, he would be a much better candidate than Trump himself and–dare I say it?–might actually be a normal and even effective president were he to have a chance.

Walz is not as big a talent but is a normal, truly decent fellow who probably wouldn’t be that effective a president. But I think he is the perfect VP.

Anyhow, this was a weird debate that reflected the weirdness of our political situation in 2024.

While maybe not “evil” Vance is certainly not “good” either. He’s 100% interested in himself. Very Trumpy like that. I see no reason to trust Vance on anything.

Vance has deep ties to the Heritage Foundation, and in particular to Kevin Roberts, who has been president of the right-wing think tank since 2021 and is the architect of Project 2025. Vance has praised Roberts for helping to turn the organization “into the de facto institutional home of Trumpism” and has endorsed elements of Project 2025. Vance is also the author of the foreword to Roberts’s upcoming book, Dawn’s Early Light, which The New Republic has obtained in full even though the book’s publisher, HarperCollins’s Broadside Books, has apparently tried to suppress it amid the scrutiny of Project 2025 and Vance’s ties to Roberts.

The subtitle and cover of Roberts’s book were softened as scrutiny of the Trump campaign’s ties to Project 2025 grew. The book, which is scheduled to be published on September 24, was originally announced with the subtitle “Burning Down Washington to Save America” and featured a match on the center of its cover. The subtitle is now “Taking Back Washington to Save America,” and the match is nowhere to be seen. Promotional language invoking conservatives on the “warpath” to “burn down … institutions” like the FBI, the Department of Justice, and universities has also been removed or toned down, though it is still present in some sales pages.

But the inspiration for that extreme language can be found in Vance’s foreword, which ends with a call for followers to “circle the wagons and load the muskets,” and describes Roberts’s ideas as an “essential weapon” in the “fights that lay [sic] ahead.” (The New Republic downloaded Dawn’s Early Light earlier this month from NetGalley, which provides advance copies of books to reviewers and booksellers. Copies were removed from the platform earlier this month.)

I certainly agree. Vance may be Trump’s running mate this year, but tonight, Vance seemed to be laying the groundwork for a Presidential run in 2028. That’s what tonight’s debate showed—that Vance actually has ideas of his own, and that even if they only slightly depart from Trump’s, are still his ideas.

Vance is scary. Sensible, no word salad, able to think on his feet, articulate. If Trump is elected (heaven forbid!), it will be because of Vance.

Yeah you may want to check this out.

Sigh, scroll down to the artcle. I couldn’t get this right. Oh yeah sorry, it’s a Vox article.

Yeah, I think Vance is a snake who is for himself but actually has a conscience, something that his master* lacks.

*Soon to be discarded/eliminated master–like one Sith doing in another.
