Warning: Football-Like Substance Found!

Not to mention “nonexistent”.

That too.

When I was growing up (in England) there was a Saturday morning highlight show called “The Blitz” (no relation to the ESPN News show, it was more like a weekly wrap-up show like Inside the NFL), they didn’t even report on it there- and this was during the first season of NFL Europe (the “World League”, back then).

It wasn’t until I accidentally bought the World League yearbook for… '93? The year Brad Johnson won the “World Bowl” for London, at any rate- that I realized there was a professional American football team in Britain.

Lion coverage in the Freep says that Drew Stanton and maybe Drew Henson will get a chance to show their Andre Wares this week. Kitna has a sore back and Orlovsky is hurting. What a team.
But, the future of the Lions is not Kitna. He is 35 and the team is moribund. They have to find a way to build for the future. We have to open a new can of quarterbacks.
There are some decent receivers, a couple useful runners . They have to find a way to use them.

Yep… definitely time to start tossing the backup QBs at the wall to see if one sticks.

I think the problem is that Marinelli will be desperately trying to avoid getting fired, and Kitna probably gives him the best chance to win in the short term.

What’s wrong with Orlovsky? I always thought they should give him a shot to start- he was pretty good in college and seems like the kind of guy who could turn out to be Tony Romo or Tom Brady.

He came in last week and tossed a horrible interception. He has had opportunities, not a lot but some. He never took over the job. He is hurt right now. He may be able to play ,but they have to quit screwing around and find a direction.

Not really a fan of Orlovsky. I think that’s mainly due to the offensive line, though. Coming out of college, I thought he would have been a decent pickup. I’d like to see how he can handle an offense that’s not…well…the Lions.

I think that’s what makes him a perfect fit- he had a horrible line at UConn, too.

Dude, the NFL is no joke. I’d rather get tackled by a college linebacker than get steamrolled by his NFL counterpart.

Hell, I’d much rather not get tackled by either, if I can help it.

True, but for $1 mil+ a year (plus employer-paid medical :D) I’d let Ray Lewis hit me helmet-to-helmet while simultaneously being forechecked by Donald Brashear, hit in the wedding tackle by Mike Tyson, hit in the arm by a Randy Johnson fastball and… beaten up by Pistons fans. And for a starting job, I bet Orlovsky would be happy to take a beating.

ETA: Maybe not so much on the Tyson thing. But you get the idea.

You…

…um…

you like the pain, don’t you? I wouldn’t wish that on my worst enemy.

I like the money. The guys on Jackass do much worse for much less dough…

A million bucks to be a vegetable, though? You couldn’t even enjoy the money.

Best job in sports ,3rd string QB. Almost never get in and make a lot of money. Wonder if their fingers get pinched by the clipboards. Paper cuts would be scary too.

There’s always the horrifying thought that Mike Martz might show up one day and make you his starter…

I’d have to go with Punter. 3rd string QBs are so fungible that any given one of them figures to be out of the league within a year or two, and they seldom even earn enough seniority that their minimum salaries begin to be impressive. OTOH, a competent punter can easily last a decade or more in the league, make somewhat more than the league minimum, and almost never is he the goat (unlike a Kicker). He doesn’t even have to learn the playbook. That’s a sweet job.

Chump change compared to QB but not getting tackled very often is good. QBs are the other position that has a long career. Girls and celebrities love Qbs . Only friend a kicker has is in a dive bar where he can drink for free as long as it’s beer.

Drew Sharp of the Free Press made the point that Stanton likely won’t get the start until the Lions are back at home. Kind of a win back the fans gimmick in the same way that Joey Harrington started a few years back.

And then we have Drew Henson. He was tough in college, what happened to him? He made a few bucks playing pro baseball but never came close.

They could have won today. They got jobbed on 3 calls. They were important. They are doomed. Orlovsky showed nothing. He walked into a safety. Dumb.

Hey! If Green Bay wins today, the lions will move into 2nd place all by themselves!
