Winston Churchill famously traveled to America with a letter from a doctor ensuring his ability to keep up his daily habit.
To (over?)simplify the explanation from the NIH, our bodies will preferentially work on the ethanol first before working on the methanol, giving more time to deal with the methanol - either by the medical professionals directly or by giving the kidneys more time to filter the methanol out before it metabolizes to some nasty stuff.
That includes formaldehyde IIRC - home stills accidentally producing methanol being the source of the stereotype of moonshine leading to blindness
And of course, prescription vodka has an expiration date. Drink up before it goes bad!
Most alcohol-related blindness comes/came from adulterants added to up the kick or stretch the alcohol, or from drinking intentionally denatured alcohol. All the methanol that comes out of a still was in the distillate already. It’s true that the methanol tends to come out first, so if you run your still and keep the very first stuff that comes out separate and drink just that you can cause yourself problems. But distillation cannot create methanol and the risks are wildly overblown.
I have one framed.
I wasn’t sure in what P&E thread this belongs, but it is Rudy-related: Ukraine charges officials tied to Hunter Biden probe and Russia - BBC News
I suspect the Ukrainian courts will be less lenient than American ones. I don’t foresee Rudy being dragged any further into this, though, unless one of them calls him as a witness.
What’s Ukrainian for “FAFO”?
According to Google Translate, потрахався і дізнався
I like it. I like it a lot!
It included unsupported claims that he had evidence President Joe Biden unlawfully enriched himself, which reportedly sparked Mr Giuliani’s search for incriminating information in Ukraine.
It reminds me of Ol’ Dick Cheney. Cheney famously once gave a quote to the New York Times on a Friday. Then, on a Sunday talk show, he “quoted the New York Times as having said … [exactly what Cheney had told the Times],” in an obvious ploy to distance himself from the statement and lend it an air of credibility.
So, ol’ Rudy got a tip from a criminal effectively in his employ.
I’ve got Scumbag BINGO!!
Nice to see that Comer and the House GOP are following suit.
We had dehydrated alcohol in stock for exactly this, to be given intravenously.
Wanna hear something scary? For a while, IV ethanol was used for PRETERM LABOR. It was the best thing they had.
Updating this for multiple threads, but Rudy’s going for the bankruptcy dodge:
https://www.cnn.com/2023/12/21/politics/rudy-giuliani-declares-bankruptcy/index.html
Drat. I noticed all the Rudy threads and none said he died yet I was really hoping it’d be prison.
Fucking “America’s Mayor”. I’ve despised that guy since he was a prosecutor and would go out on photo-op DEA busts
No, no. He first has to suffer immensely before that happens.
The suffering is just beginning for him.
Prison is probably next.
Yikes, a quarter-liter of “spirits” (presumably high-proof distilled stuff) a day? Minimum? I never realized Churchill was that much of a lush.
He is famously quoted: " A magnum of Champagne is an appropriate amount for two men at lunch. If one is not drinking." I think he lived to 94?
I’d love to have a prescription that literally says “the quantity is naturally indefinite”.
Though I did get a prescription once that says “once daily for the rest of your life”. And yeah, I do take it every day, though I get it over the counter now.
(Not for alcohol though, I don’t drink very often.)
Wait Doc, this says 30 day prescription, no refills.
…
Yes, I’m pretty sure he was at Clinton’s inauguration in 93.
I’m not sure if this is a whoosh, but that would have made him 119 years old.
You can make things last longer if they are well-pickled first…
