We interrupt your regularly scheduled MMP to bring you this Early TV Mockumentary

Or, what I did on my mini vacation. As you all know by his fairly self-evident title TVMan restores antique televisions for a living. Once a year antique television restorers and buffs return to their holy ground, the Early Television Museum in Hilliard, Ohio. Allow me to [del]bore you out of your minds[/del] give you a sneak peek into their world.

One of the most recent acquisitions of the museum is this large camera crew vehicle. (Ok, so it’s late and I can’t think of what it’s really called.) As a part of this initiation rights each person must climb into the vehicle and have themselves photographed looking as though they know how to operate everything in there. (Yes, I know, he probably does.)

Here is a picture tube and here’s a complete wall of picture tubes. Bad things can happen if picture tubes fall on the floor and go boom. If you’re really curious about this you can find some really stupid people on YouTube smashing them with sledgehammers and such, but I’m not that curious so I’m not going to link to any. :stuck_out_tongue:

So, back to what I was saying. Here are a couple of peculiar finds. This is called a ‘color-tel.’ It’s an adapter that was put in front of black and white tvs to produce a color picture. Moving right along we find this television jukebox. And next up is one of my favorites, it’s the Kuba Komet, a television manufactured in 1962 in Germany. Other than it’s enormous size, I find it particularly interesting because my former business partner’s husband, who is German, designed the house that they live in and this tv would fit in there perfectly. Ok, so you’ll probably all realize that I took these two pictures in preparation for the MMP. Not only is the tv pinkish/purple, it’s also manufactured by a company named Pye. Can’t forget the ever popular Philco Predicta for gotti! This particular one is interesting because all of that wide cord behind it is about 25 feet long and is there so that you can carry the tv from room to room.

To conclude this tour, I’d like to show you a couple pictures of the tv that I purchased at last year’s convention. It’s a 1947 Stromberg-Carlson and was mostly likely the high-tech entertainment center of the day. It has tv, fm, am, shortwave, and arecord player. TVMan just recently finished(note the sexy tattoo in this picture  ) the restoration and it is fully functional except for the record player which is out for some minor adjustments which are being performed by a record player restorer. So, this evening I’m sitting here typing this MMP with my TV on in the background and I’m watching Harry Potter and The Order of the Phoenix on it!

I hope you all have [del]managed to stay awake[/del] enjoyed this tour. Stay tuned for next year when the women strike back! (Did I mention that there were about 100 people at the convention this year and about 8 of them were women??)

Thanks!!!

I guess I’m not Kool enuf 'cuz pbbth didn’t take my hint to post this here so I’ll do it for her:

pbbth’s chocolate chip pie, from the “I like pie” thread

Okay, here is my pie recipe for those who want it. It tastes like warm, gooey chocolate chip cookies but it is pie. Trust me when I say it is the most delicious thing you have ever put in your mouth. I will bring it to the New Jersey Dopefest in July so that everyone can experience the wonderousness of my pie.

2 eggs, beaten
1 cup sugar
1/2 cup flour
1 stick of margerine, melted
6-12 oz of chocolate chips (I use 12, but people who don’t feel like they need that much can use 6 oz instead.)
1 tsp vanilla
1 premade graham cracker pie crust

Beat the eggs and add each ingredient individually, mixing after each is added. Pour into unbaked pie shell and bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes.

I am not kidding when I say that I have seen people get into arguments over the last slice of this pie. If you make it be prepared for proposals and offers of cash for future pies.
Me again: OP (Our Pie!) I promise I will read the OP and look at all the pictures ('cuz it all looks quite fascinating,) but right now I’m just sorta archiving this here NOP recipe…

Oh no, not first! Will read later.

Neat TV’s, Pie.My two are 10+, so they are halfway to antique.

Cool TVs, Pie. I particularly like that Kuba Komet – far out, man! Woo!

Actually, I grew up on an old black & white big ol’ heavy TV in a cabinet that my grandparents gave us. Before that, my sister and I had to go next door to watch Lassie with the neighbor kids. All four of us would line up on the floor, pretending to be dogs sitting there, and raise our paw when Lassie did. But anyway, my grandparents gave us the TV, so until I went to college that was it. In later years, the vertical hold gradually failed and it developed a slow roll; it took an incredibly fine touch to get it to hold still. I spent many an evening watching TV sitting on the floor in front of it so I could stop the picture rolling. No remote, of course! I spent my childhood wondering what that stupid NBC peacock looked like in color; it was a rare treat to see it at someone else’s house. Yes, I was easily entertained.

And then of course the instant I moved away to college, my parents went out and bought themselves a lovely brand-new color TV with remote control. :smack:

Anyway, I have been working all evening. Our power blinked out for a moment earlier, enough to throw everything in the house offline; fortunately, I’m paranoid enough that I have my computer backup autosave set to 1 minute, so I only lost one sentence. I can live with that. And Rusty is still lying here calmly in his Anxiety Wrap™; his breathing has been a bit fast at times when the wind really picks up and beats the rain against the house, but otherwise he’s been as contented as I have EVER seen him during bad weather. We are, to put it mildly, overjoyed. It’s been so hard watching this poor sweet dog suffer in bad weather; he’s got about as severe a case of storm anxiety as I have ever heard of. So keeping him calm is a MAJOR achievement.

I’m babbling, aren’t I? Back to work so I can get to bed at a decent hour! And be all done with Dr. Stupid Idiot!

I wanna go there sooo badly. I did a bunch of research for a book on early TV program technique before I realized no one gave a damn about anything but the hardware. :dubious:

It’s after ten, I should get ready for bed and go to sleep but I am wide awake despite sleeping horribly last night.

Ah well.

Anyone want some bacon maple walnut fudge?

Finally went and looked at all those pictures - Neat! I don’t know anything about TVs other than that they show pictures and noise sometimes.

Walnut, Maple and BACON all together? I’d really love to make some but my fudge skills are atrocious if it doesn’t involve Marshmallow Fluff.

ETA: I’m hanging out until midnight to check woot.com. I’ve become hopelessly addicted, and even though I don’t have enough money to afford the neat things they have on the main page, shirt.woot.com has 10 dollar shirts, including shipping, and most of them are adorable. I bought this one on Saturday! Isn’t it kyooooot?

Always Brings Pie, that was fascinating! If you’re ever at a DopeFest in Toronto, we can hit the Museum of Television.

Also, I want a Kuba Komet now.

I’m out of power for 8 hours, and when I get it back, there’s a new MMP. Damned tornadoes.

Back to bed for moi.

Morning all. Busy today. Great OP, Cutie!
:vrooooommmmmmm:

Man, it is REALLY raining here. It comes and goes a bit, but looking at the weather radar, it looks like a tropical storm sitting directly on us spinning around, with us in the center area of heaviest rain. There’s already a bunch of roads flooded. I sure hope Papa Tigs doesn’t have trouble getting to and from work tomorrow; D.C. traffic is bad enough without heavy rain and flooding to compound the torment!

I’m back from VEGAS! Going to bed now. See ya’ll in a few hours.

Ugh. It’s too early for this.

Good Monday morning! Hey, great OP, CutiePie; I’m a television junkie so find all things television related fascinating. I shall have to explore that website further.

Day 8 and counting! I still want a cigarette but not as much, I guess. LOL I have not and will not give in!!

I don’t want to go out in that heavy rain but I must … have a good day, Mumpers.

Those are some pretty awesome teevees, Pie! I’m totally coveting the Kuba Komet… it would look super next to our Ugly Orange Chair. It’s kind of neat to see how they progressed from luxury showpieces to a dime-a-dozen commodities - I see a marketing or design term paper in there somewhere.

Off to work. It’s crappy and rainy and I’d MUCH rather be still in bed with The Boy. Sigh.

Send the rain down here please. It’s dry and my nose is all stuffy when I go outside.

donkeybear that shirt is a hoot! I want one.

CutiePie that’s a jake OP! I lurve all the old teevees. I want a tv jukebox. It just sounds like a ton o’ fun.

Fudge with bacon… what’s not to love?

I need more caffiene and some brekkies. Also work purtification must commence, so…

Later Y’all!

::beep:: ::beep::

Mornin’, y’all. I’ll tell you about rodeos and tornadeys when I get back from foraging.

::vroom::

Before I read the OP, I must say

  WTF???

Thank you, Pie. That was neat. And I didn’t even fall asleep.

I have important and exciting news! Sort of! Quasi-Daughter has finally agreed to marry Driving Husband! Yesterday! After a year and a half. They are so romantic. She made a note in her notebook to remind herself to say yes.

Also, as a sign of how tired I am, I’ve just noticed I’m wearing my shirt inside out. I just put it on. It could be worse- I could have noticed while getting ready for bed tonight.
