That’s right, we were in Rouleau, Saskatchewan this weekend. It was quite cool, and I advise all Highway #1 travellers between Regina and Moose Jaw to take the small detour off the highway and go see it.
Here are our pictures - Jim and our car in front of the Corner Gas gas station and The Ruby set (the pictures don’t show it well, but the elevator actually has the name of the town as Dog River. All you westerners will realize how cool that is, I’m sure. )
Me walking away from the Foo Mar T. It’s actually some kind of office (insurance or something).
The Dog River Police Station. We’ll just ignore the idea that a town of less than 1000 people actually has two full-time cops in it.
The Dog River pub. It really is a hotel/bar, but we don’t think the interior is used in the show at all.
This is us with the giant Moose Jaw moose. It wasn’t in Dog River, but it is a really big moose.
I love Corner Gas. The first couple seasons, were great, then the writing seemed to suffer, but lately there have been some very good episodes again. I know what you mean about the police station. Any town that small would have a single RCMP officer that would visit once in awhile. I have noticed several times that Dog River has way too many facilities for a town of its size.
The Corner Gas set seems to be completely deserted. Could you walk right up to it and look inside? Wasn’t there any security? Was there a constant stream of visitors because of the show?
I am not so sure that it has reached cultural icon status as of yet. While I enjoyed the first season, season and a half, the show has lost something IMO. However I am not one of those people who remember when shows are on, and it is more of a random or re-run thing for me (comedy network).
Plus I have never lived in a town as small as Dog River. Born and bred GTA (for the most part)
The set is empty and boarded up, but we weren’t the only visitors there (on a bleak, blustery cold day, no less).
Yeah, this thread might belong in Cafe Society. I thought it was pretty Mundane and Pointless, but it is about a television show.
Not a cultural icon yet? Hmm…maybe not. I think it will be, though (especially for Western Canadians). There was one episode this last season that had us laughing out loud at almost every line.
Have you noticed you can catch half the CG stars on Robson Arms? Which is a meh show, kinda, but oh well, it kills the other half-hour.
I saw a documentary last year about a bunch of fans visiting Dog River. A couple fans met in the online forum saw Dog River together, and have married. In’t that sweet?
I don’t have cable, but I’m fortunate to live close enough to the border that I can pick up a station in Vancouver that broadcasts “Corner Gas.” Absolutely loved the season-ender.
It’s one of my favorite shows, even if I do have to listen to Canuckleheads mispronounce Mazda during the commercials.
I’m sad that Netflix doesn’t carry these DVDs (so I used their handy-dandy link to suggest that they pick them up). I think Brett Butt is a hoot and would love to see this series.
Did you see the combined insurance agency/liquor board store? They’ve brought that into the show but there really is one there according to one of my co-workers who lives out at Rouleau.
I’ve seen several of the cast members in the city. Last summer at a Shopper’s Drug Mart I was checking out the organic foods area of the store and realized that the guy looking at the freezer beside me was Eric Peterson (Oscar). A few minutes later I ended up behind him at the casher and had to remind him to take his Diet Coke after he started walking away without it.
Last summer at the Globe Theatre the cast did a stage version of Corner Gas that I think would’ve been a hoot to see. Sadly, I didn’t make it there.
