I get this error message quite often, when trying to go to a thread, or when trying to access the SDMB itself. Does this happen to others too? Is it because of heavy ‘traffic’ at the time, or something else–something with my computer, maybe?

All the time. And yes, it’s because of the high traffic volume using up all the available bandwidth. You’ll get used to it. 
Yeah, I’m fairly calm about it already. It’s disappointing though. Thanks for your verification.
And another question: Is it better to log out when I leave, or just x out? Quite often I don’t have to log in, but then other times I do, in order to be able to post to anything. I’m just trying to figure out how it all works. Thanks in advance for any help.
I never log out. I’m on my own computer that no one else has access to, so that’s perfectly safe. If you’re on a machine that others can use too, like a public library computer, you’ll absolutely want to log out before you leave. Assuming your machine is handling cookies properly, you shouldn’t have to log in again until you log out, or you clear your cookies.
