Has anyone here been able to update their bank account information on the Get My Payment site and subsequently had the payment direct deposited? If so, what was the timing?
WHOA! I had been checking twice a day and kept getting “info not available,” but just now I got a screen that asked me for bank deposit info! It also asked for my adjusted gross income and amt refunded or owed from my 2019 tax return (which I’ve already done-- I NEVER get a refund. I always owe, and I did this year, too). If you haven’t done 2019, then 2018 numbers are okay.
I had been getting the “status unavailable” message. I’m getting SSDI and the FAQ says that that could be a reason for the unavailable message and that if I get direct deposit payments then it will be deposited in the same account automatically and I didn’t need to do anything.
So I assumed that it might be added to this month’s SSDI payment which I get via direct deposit. It wasn’t.
Just now I checked my status again and it said that I was eligible but I had to enter the info from my last return and also my bank account info. Hopefully I’ll now receive it.
I think this is a case of one hand not knowing what the other is doing, a problem I’ve found is common in both government and corporate bureaucracies.
I heard something about how some people who got a “rapid refund” last year were having problems getting their payments.
What’s happening is that the tax preparer (Turbo Tax, HR Block, etc.) gives you the refund and then later receives the refund from the IRS into their bank account. The problem is that the IRS then has the preparer’s banking info linked to you. So the stimulus payments are being sent to the preparers’ accounts instead of the taxpayers’.
Just a warning to everyone. I received a text message that is an obvious phishing attempt. I don’t think anyone here would fall for it, but just in case.
The link was of course a string of random characters which I did not click on. No doubt it would display a page asking for information that would allow them to commit some theft such as redirecring my payment.
If you get such a message ignore it and DO NOT CLICK ON THE LINK!
