In the Weezer song “El Scorcho” there’s a part that goes:
I asked you to go to the Green Day concert
You said you never heard of them
-How cool is that?-
So I went to your room and read your diary:
“watching grunge leg drop New-Jack through a presstable…”
and then my heart stopped:
“listening to Cio-Cio San fall in love all over again.”
What’s that supposed to mean? I’ve also seen version where the last line is written as:
“listening to Cio-Cio San” fall in love all over again.
Maybe Green Day translated into Japanese is Cio-Cio San? Any ideas?
No, Cio-Cio San is a character in Madame Butterfly. There’s also a character named Benjamin Franklin PINKERTON. That album seems to revolve around it like a concept album or something.
Don’t listen to Weezer or watch professional wrestling, but the “watching grunge leg drop New-Jack through a presstable…” line sounds like it refers to a pro wrestler named “New-Jack” applying a leg drop manuever to a somebody named “Grunge” and sending through one of the ringside press tables. Just guessing…
Sorry about toping this almost 3 weeks after it was initially posted, but I was just browsing the board for the first time and came upon this thread.
Anyways, as Guy Incognito said, it is a wrestling reference. Basing my info on Weezer and this song solely on what they have at CDNow, allow me to somewhat explain.
The CD with the song in question on it was released in 1996. Around this time, in the NE US (Philadelphia, NY, etc) there was a small up-start wrestling promotion known as Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW). Their two prominant tag teams at the time were The Eliminators and the Public Enemy (PE). One of the members of the Eliminators was named New Jack, and one of the members of PE was named Johnny Grunge. One of the things that made ECW unique was their use of presstables (as well as other weapons) in the matches. The most common use of the presstable was to lay someone on it and jump from the top turnbuckle onto the other wrestler sending them through the table. Moves such as this were quite common in the fued between the Public Enemy and the Elimiators.
So, how does all this tie together? Well, CDNow reports that Weezer had relocated back to the NE US around 1995, when Extreme Championship Wrestling was first beginning to build on its cult following, which continues to grow 5 years later. If Weezer is in fact wrestling fans, I imagine that they could very well be fans of ECW.
