I’m getting notifications for posts in years old threads in which I’ve never even posted.
Linking to the thread might be helpful, but try this:
Go to the thread in the notification. Click the Button at the bottom of the thread labels either Tracking or Watching. Select Normal in the pull down.
Thank you, I’ll try that. I closed SDMB and they seem to be gone now. Must’ve been a hiccough.
I got notifications for a whole batch of stuff: notification of replies in threads that nothing had happened in for months or years, multiple notifications that threads had been moved (one of those twice for the same thread), notifications that I’d won various awards at various times going back to when I first joined the board.
Most of them have since disappeared, so I can’t list them. The three still showing up are two notifications of “popular link” award and one of the “anniversary” award. One of the others, as I remember it, was of either a reply in the first section of the Russia invading Ukraine thread (which was closed quite a while ago) or a notification that that thread had been moved – I don’t now remember which.
This sounds like more fallout from the surprise upgrade we got last night that changed the menu. Discourse does all the upgrades and this was a fairly major change without warning or instructions.
I got this as well, and the notifications are now gone.
This is one of the threads I remembered, as there was a user named Zorro on snopes, so I thought I would have remembered posting about Zorro.
Ah ok so that’s why my menu is different now!
The Menu update is covered here:
Things I learned today:
It’s called a hamburger menu icon! I had no idea.
There is a Site Feedback forum! I had no idea.
My notifications box still has eight old threads on top of what should be the newest.
Ironically, two of the threads are “This new site sucks!” and “Anyone else seriously considering leaving?”
Yes, that’s the official term for it, because someone thought it looks like a patty between two buns. In recent years it has become the standard “menu” icon for all kinds of user interfaces.
If anyone had asked me, I would have called it an ice cream sandwich, but nobody asked me.
There are seven now, but the two I mentioned are no longer on the list.
I’m not getting any weird notifications. Now I feel left out.
Those three are still there, as of 6:47 EST May 25.
Have you clicked on them? That’s how I got rid of all the notifications from two-year-old threads.
I thought I had. And I just did it again. And they’re still there.
I noticed they seemed to be highlighted, though I don’t think I’d done that. And that there was a checkmarked “dismiss” at the bottom of the popup box. So I clicked on “dismiss” and now they’re gone; though the rest of the list - actual recent notifications – is still there.
Are you talking about what shows up when you click on your icon? If that’s the case, just click on the “Dismiss” button at the bottom and that loses all the old threads.
Yes, as I said above, I’ve already done that, and it worked.
The “dismiss” button is now also gone. Clicking on the arrow at the bottom of the box takes me into a page in my profile, which has no clear way to dismiss anything. I seem to remember a previous discussion of this leading to the conclusion that there isn’t any way, ordinarily, to get notifications out of one’s notification box, other than to wait for them to fall off the bottom (after which they’re still in the profile, but easy to ignore.)
Another weirdity. When I posted that, the last post was by ThelmaLou. Sorry for the useless post.
Computers are weird!
No harm done.
