Welcome to Twenty-Twenty-Sucks (January Mini-Rants)

I had a car like that before. Going out in the cold is a major decision.

Also I can’t help but worry about my car breaking down in subzero temps. That can get serious real quick.

Thank you for your kindness. I needed it. I slept in until 7:30am this morning because I really needed to. I then had a doctor’s appointment - I noted nobody else in the waiting room as I’m guessing the cold kept a lot of people home. I have good winter gear but I made the mistake of taking my gloves off in the car right when I got in it. Holy shit. I felt it instantly and it took forever to warm up again.

I’m home now and the boy is home and my husband is home and we are both working from home and we’re not going anywhere for two days. And I’m pleased to report we still have running water. No oven or microwave but at least we got water and two functioning stove burners.

I’m definitely slower than usual, but I’m slogging through a bunch of miscellaneous work tasks, taking baby steps to get caught up, and I can work some tomorrow and Sunday to at least balance the timesheet scales a little. Monday is another school tour, one I’m really hopeful about, but that’s more of my work time. I think if I just keep at it on the weekends for the next few weeks, I can regain some of the hours lost.

My sister works at Taco Bell and often brings me home lunch if it’s not too busy. She warned me this would happen, but it finally did today - my usual menu item, the Chicken Enchilada Burrito, has been discontinued.

Working with a herpetologist with the aim of growing a few reptilian appendages and gaining superpowers sounds pretty cool, and certainly more fun than the actual reality. Which is being sent for a sort of fancy specialized ultrasound that I actually have to pay for, something virtually unknown in Canadian health care! Not only that, but the test results may tell me to lay the hell off Caesars, vodka martinis, rum, and wine with dinner. What a life that would be!

In that case, just have it with lunch.

I’m in a room on the top floor of my house. Right above me ( from the ceiling ) I’m hearing sounds… like bubbling or boiling? I think that the snow on my roof is loosening up for an avalanche.

Don’t laugh; snow really can fly down a house roof in sheets…

Unrelated, but it was just announced that entertainer/performer Floyd Vivino “Uncle Floyd” just died.

Data brokers have stooped to a new low. One recently took over the website for a legitimate but recently closed organization serving victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. Now that data brokers have control of the website, they are posing as a domestic violence organization and harvesting sensitive data from a population that faces significant risk of harm if their data is obtained.

Keep it classy.

JFC, we now have the best of a “winter wonderland”. First, it continues to be colder than a witch’s tit, and now a major winter storm threatening the entire northeast continent is upon us! As regards subsistence, both vodka and rum supplies are down to emergency levels!

Don’t any liquor stores or grocery stores that sell liquor deliver?

Who?!

I’ll get back to you on that because I don’t want to share inaccurate information but it was posing as a men’s organization supporting survivors of intimate partner violence and sexual assault.

Grocery stores can now sell wine, beer, and mixed drinks but not hard liquor. Rum and vodka and the like can be ordered from the government liquor monopoly but it’s not worth the hassle when the liquor store is just down the street. Much more fun to just rant about the lousy weather! :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

I’m sure people have been doing that for thousands of years.

With the biggest snowstorm of the season nearly upon us, I came here to rant about the jerk who parked in front of my house with the ass end of his SUV partially sticking into my driveway entrance. But I see that he’s now fucked off, so never mind. It would have made it difficult or nearly impossible for Snowplow Guy to do his job just when I needed him the most. How can people be so fucking stupid? Are they blind? Can they not see that they’ve made an incursion into my driveway?

I was going to leave a note on their windshield to try to use their goddam eyes the next time they park, but it was just too cold and too snowy out. (There’s lots and lots of room to pull well forward away from my driveway entrance, but some of these fuckers just can’t do it.)

I haven’t left the house in a few days, but although the temperature readings in the weather reports are not as cold as they were last night, it’s still pretty freaking cold. I notice this when I go downstairs into the kitchen – there are waves of cold air coming from the exhaust fan over the stove. Good thing I’m having pizza tonight – the oven is getting nice and hot!

Lately I plan my dinner menus based on how much heat they contain and/or generate within my kitchen. A slow simmered stew is wonderful. A two-minute omelet is a dud. Pizza is forever excellent!

This is true on many levels.

Well, old butterfingers here has done it again. I meant to delete one little file, and somehow deleted an entire folder with maybe 50 movie files in it. A few had been moved out to an external drive but most had not yet been moved.

Fortunately, I have a large-capacity SD card in my tablet on which I’ve been saving a lot of my recent favourites, so I’m currently restoring from that, though it’s taking freaking forever because the tablet only supports USB 2.0. I also have a backup of the entire drive but it’s quite old, so some of what wasn’t saved on the tablet I can get from the backup. But the rest is lost.

TBH that drive is getting quite old and I was expecting that it may fail at any time, so the really important stuff is all backed up. Nothing really important was lost but my incompetence, exacerbated by poor design of Windows Explorer, is just so frustrating. This is not the first time I’ve deleted a folder instead of a file, or the contents of the wrong folder because what’s on the left pane doesn’t match what the right pane is showing.

The files should still be on your computer in the Recycle Bin. Anytime you delete something it’s not actually gone unless you then empty the Recycle Bin. Just go there, select the file or folders you want and click Restore.

I have this bad habit of deleting stuff via shift-delete, all in the spirit of efficiency so I don’t clutter up disk space with stuff in the recycle bin. This quest for “efficiency” has bitten me in the ass more than once!

ETA: For my next trick, after I restore a few more missing files from the backup, I’m going to (very carefully!) delete those files from the backup (which is actually a clone of the other drive, not an image file) and then copy all the painfully recovered new files to the appropriate folder in the backup, in case this old HDD actually fails completely. That should be pretty fast as that will be the computer’s internal drive copying to an SSD over USB 3.
