Last Saturday it was a very chilly 11 in my kitchen. Today it’s 28. I think winter - and it’s been one of the coldest we’ve had here in over 60 years - is finally on the wane.
Bad smug Australian! Naughty!
(Makes mental note to post about spring in a few months time)
We’re doing well over here as well. I’m renewing my heartfelt acquaintance with sunlight, embracing it like a long lost friend.
The trees seem to think it’s spring as well, gradually daring to come out in leaf. T’is nice.
Soon be daylight saving time an’ all.
Yep. Only three more weeks. Its start date has been moved forward this year from the last Sunday in October to the first Sunday in October.
Really hot here today. Shorts and tee shirt. And the frigging butcher bird attacked me. After the cat stole the bacon I had out for breakfast.
Why can’t the cat eat the butcher bird?
You Aussies are just copy cats! Ours is the last Sunday in September.
The fruit trees are in blossom - peach outside the lounge window, plum by the back door.
The budgie spent the largest part of the day in his cage, hung in the tree and every window in the house was open.
The grass is growing 20cm between Sundays - yep, that’s spring all right.
You southern hemisphere types seem to have been having some cold snaps in recent years. I hope it’s our turn for a decent old-fashioned winter soon. I love the frost and snow, but we haven’t had a decent long-lasting cold spell here in the UK since 1991. Last time I saw more than 3 or 4 inches of snow was 1996, and that was up north.
I know energy for heating is increasingly expensive, and lots of people struggle in cold weather, but give me sharp frosty mornings and snow over the 13C, windy, murky muck that tends to be January in the UK in recent years any time…
Why would it choose anything over bacon? Probably the cat thinks you should eat the butcher bird. Or it might be planning to eat the butcher bird but only once you have fattened it up on enough bacon.
I live in the Caribbean. It’s summer year-round. Kinda boring sometimes.
Hmmm, how about a house-swap for a few months, Mighty Girl?
Gah! Roll on winter, I say! I am fed up with hot, steamy, Middle Eastern summer days and am now yearning for October, when the overnight temps will eventually drop below 30C (about 90F)!
Stupid people whining about to much sun - I agree with Putin that there are some places that could use som more heat and sun.
Looks out the window at the pouring rain and the days getting shorter
I should have known it wouldn’t last. A cold front and thunderstorm came through overnight. It’s back to 13 again, and the heaters were going full bore in the church at mass this morning.
25C yesterday, a little windy, but it was bloody nice after the recent cold spells. I went geocaching and I got a little warm climbing up and down the hill where the Sunbury Musical Festival was he back in the 60’s.
Today will only be 17, but the sun is out and the sky is blue which is an indicator of spring. The week will be a little chilly but getting warmer as we approach the weekend.
I cut the grass last weekend for the first time in about 9 months (no rain during summer meant no cutting, only watching as it dies a horrible, brown death). When I say grass, I mean grass and weeds. Damn, weeds spring up as soon as there is a little rain and warmth.
The grass (weeds) will need cutting again today and I’m all happy. I love cutting the grass. Takes about an hour (plus 30 minutes for edging) and on a day like today you don’t get all sweaty and it’s nice to be outside.
The trees as starting to put out leaves. Half the tree outside the computer room has leaves. There was nothing last week. It will soon start to cast a shade area which I will enjoy in a few weeks time as the weather starts to warm up even more.
The plants are growing and some of the bushes will need pruning. I love pruning too. A few weeks in the garden beds which, because they are all mulched, come out easy. The horrible, bloody oxalis is still there, but I’ll go poison that later today. Only way to deal with it unfortunately.
The solar heater for the pool is kicking in more and more and I’d give it about 4 weeks and we’re likely to be in the pool until March.
I love spring.
