So on Saturday night, Husband and I were gonna go run an errand, and hit the local Circle K before we left, so Husband could get a soda.
While we were there, we saw a pretty little white dog interacting with someone, who then went into the store. We were surprised when the person then left the store and the dog also.
We asked the clerk at the Circle K what was up with the dog, and he said the dog had been there about 2 days - he thought it had been dumped by someone. Husband and I discussed what to do, and decided to take the dog to the nearest shelter in case it hadn’t been dumped and was missed by it’s Boss.
The dog was SUPER friendly and loving. He came right up to us for petting, and when we told him to get in the car he went with very little convincing needed. We hung onto him in the car for a bit while we looked up the local shelter’s information. We wound up taking him to the local police department, who assured us that they would have Animal Control pick him up in the morning - in the meantime they had a kennel to keep him in.
We just couldn’t get that little pooch out of our minds. We discussed it with each other and decided that, if his first family doesn’t come for him, we want to adopt him. So Sunday we drove to the shelter and filled out a Commitment To Adopt. He’ll be waiting for is first family until Friday 12/15, then we just need to come get him, pay the adoption fees ($145, includes neutering, vaccinations, a coupon for a free vet’s visit, some dog food, and his License To Be A Dog) and he’s ours.
So, yay!!!
Based on his looks and his temperament, we think he’s mostly a Bichon Frise. He’s pure white, with long curly fur that is currently matted and needing a good grooming, from his time sleeping rough. The animal control people estimated his age at 5 years - Bichons tend to live about 15 years, so he’ll still be around for a good long while.
This dog is just so damn lovable. Sweet and mild-tempered, we spent a couple hours with him on Saturday and about a half hour Sunday and he never once barked or whined or threatened. We could see he was stressed out from living rough, but he was so loving we couldn’t stay away from him.
Alas, all my pictures of him are on Facebook, which I can’t link to. Here’s a link to his picture at the shelter: http://animalcare.lacounty.gov/wps/portal/acc/our_animals/detail?animalID=A5136058&page=1
He is a Good Dog. We really hope we can keep him.
Addendum: The shelter has temporarily named him Curly. He’ll have a different name if he comes to us.
