Wesley Clark, what the fuck was that?

What in the world was the point of this little nugget?

Does it irritate you so much that someone might be grateful for the military contribution of another country?

Yes, American forces were essential to the liberation of the Netherlands; but right now the Netherlands are celebrating the completion of the liberation by the First Canadian Army, and the special bond that they feel for Canadians.

What, don’t you have enough American victories to be proud of without pissing all over the achievements of other countries, especially in such a tactless way? Really, what was the point?

Wow…not only are some people ignorant of the roles of so many countries in WW2, but they actually deem it worthy to ‘correct’ people who aren’t. And with an unfunny joke, in a serious thread. Idiot.

Also he apparently thinks America is spelled “Canna”, which seems a bit dumb.

That was an American idiot who knows nothing of history opening his mouth.
Suggestion to Wesley, read, learn, then open your mouth.

Wait…

Perhaps it’s best you just keep your mouth shut.

It was a joke but its more fun to watch you guys take it seriously.

Easy way out.

I’ve said it before, it takes a pretty high caliber person to hang out on a board devoted to hate and complaining (the BBQ pit, I rarely come here), so i’ll probably just drop out of this whole thread. I bet you guys applaud when Judge Judy yells at people too. Suffice it to say, its funny how seriously you guys take yourself. I was going to ask weirddave if he considered using his ability to get good deals on group health insurance to cover you guys to get the stick taken out of your asses but figured it’d be a bad idea in MPSIMS. But since I’m in the pit now what the hell.

Sorry, Wes; but that ‘joke’ was in exceedingly bad taste.

In retrospect it was a serious thread on the Canadians helping liberate people from oppression, so I sincerely apologize if I detracted from that.

Another vote for rude, obnoxious, and not-at-all-funny. But since the Pit is “so mean”, you’ve left the thread, of course. Whatever. Wesley Clark, you really owe the Canadian Dopers an apology. That was totally offensive.

Wow, my wish has been granted! How come everything doesn’t go my way quite that easily?

There may not be a D in America, but there is a D in Dieppe. I hold Canada’s performance in World War II in high regard for that alone. I’ve been as critical of the current state of the Canadian military as anyone else (anyone else remember that trainwreck from last year?), but that in absolutely no way detracts from their contributions in World War II.

Only if she also farts at a kitten at the same time.

Ah, the time honored refuge of bigots and boors everywhere. If I make a patently offensive joke that is utterly devoid of humor, people are only hurt because they have no sense of humor, not because I was in any way crass or out of line.

Be a man, admit you were wrong.

Did you read post #9?

He did; not only here, but in the original thread.

Nope, I must have missed it. I apologize. I was wrong.

There, see how easy that was?

I don’t see how it was really in bad taste or rude, if it was just a joke. But I don’t really know the guy so maybe coming from him it would have been.

See, if it had even remotely been funny, people might have come to that conclusion. Were you honestly trying to make a joke there? I just can’t come up with an interpretation in which it could possibly be even remotely funny.

Meh. Not a joke, not funny, can’t imagine how it could be construed as meaning to be funny, unless it was a follow on to a running joke.

I vote total ignorance of the subject matter. Not to worry, I’m sure there’ll be a Hollywood interpretation along sooner or later that places American involvement in its rightful place.

But at least he’s had the decency to apologise.
