If it wasn’t for the Canadians, my father would’ve starved to death in May of ‘45 in Holland.
If it wasn’t for the U.S. entering the war (and yes, I know war was declared upon them by Germany and all that, that didn’t lessen their commitment when storming the Normandy beaches best I can tell) no amount of sacrifice and effort on the Canadians’ part would 've liberated the Netherlands in time to save many, many thousands
If it wasn’t for the Brits holding out, pretty much alone, when they could’ve made a seperate peace with Germany after Dunkirk, there would likely not have been a liberation of Western Europe.
I therefore owe gratitude to these three nations in roughly equal measure.
The Canadians have a special place in Dutch hearts, as the first representatives of allied forces many people met during the liberation.
It wasn’t nice of Wesley Clark to make comment easily perceived as raining on a parade, or diminishing expressed gratitude to Canada. His point of the US being worthy of similar thanks was also not one in danger to be missed, Hollywood being what it is. But it was still a very valid point, and not at all ignorant of history as claimed above. He apologized for the way he made the point, which is the only thing that might need an apology. The further pile-on is ridiculous.
In the end, my father survived because of food dropped by the Swedish Red Cross out of American bombers. But this being the Pit - Fuck the Swedes.
As I despise “me too” posts, I’ll have to say “fuck, yes!” instead. A bugger of a lot went wrong at Dieppe and the Canucks got the shitty end of the stick. It may have been a valuable rehearsal for D-day as it turned out, but the price was mighty high for the Canadians.
And I’ve seen Vimy Ridge too, though that was another war entirely…
I know I said I wouldn’t come back but I do not like the impression people are getting on my political views. I was trying to pretend to be one of those americans who takes credit for everything, I don’t actually feel that way.
Then why’d you throw a temper tantrum when people pointed it out?
A bit back I said something that Johanna interpreted as an insult. I wasted no time in assuring her that it was not my intention at all to insult her - it was just a lame joke. I don’t understand why your reaction to people not getting your “joke” (and it still doesn’t even resemble one to me) was to throw a fit. That’s not a rational response. Either your (clearly excessive, based on prior behavior) defensiveness is starting to amount to a pathology, or you’re still lying, although at this point I can’t figure out why you’d do so.
Either way, your actions have been inconsonant with your words.
Wesley_Clark, have you no decency? The woman’s body is still stiff and you think now is the time to proclaim,

There are many RGB threads. The one in Politics & Elections is an appropriate place for Wesley_Clark’s post (although he might have worded it a bit more delicately). Politically speaking, he has a perfectly valid point. Some other people in the thread are agreeing with him, and other people are discussing it. This is serious stuff.
wow you quoted a 70 year old line.
point being, how much will this set back the causes people like rbg believed in? we will probably lose roe but we may lose ground on voting rights, health reform, climate activism, workers rights and who knows what else.
and for what? because rbgs ego was so huge that six years ago at 81 she couldn’t fathom she could possibly be replaced and nobody was better than her?how long did she think she had?
I hope the boost to her ego that those extra six years gave her were worth all the coat hanger abortions that are coming.
You’re forgetting about all the good she did during those six years.
Oh good, ‘It was a joke!’, the refrain of the abject asshole.
I can’t believe anyone out of high school still thinks, ‘It’s was a joke!’ is mitigating. When all it does is loudly announce that you are remarkably immature and lack enough self awareness to hear how lame, childishly evasive and oily such a response truly is.
It shows people who you really are. Because it IS who you really are.
Are you actually replying to the 2005 OP? Did you bother to read the thread before you posted?
The fact that during this time of national mourning, anyone would so much as joke about US-Canada relations is disgusting.
I know the anti-Canada radicals are hellbent on fighting the War of 1812 over again, but now is not the time.
Sigh.
agreed, but that good could’ve been done by a 50 year old appellate judge who was appointed to the Supreme Court by Obama and approved by a democratic senate in 2014.
Ginsburg had no duty to retire, but once she entered the Trump era she had a duty to survive his first term, which she pretty much did. I’d say she did her job. As we learned during the Merrick Garland debacle, we can never know for sure how vacancies are going to turn out and what the future has in store.
The real problem is that our political culture is warped and our Constitution and political system is increasingly an ineffectual tool in dealing with it. This is not on RBG.
Just imagine how different things would be now if you had thought of that 15 years ago instead of going with the joke.
I understand anyone can have an opinion, but it’s not exactly productive to be mad at the dead lady when it’s Mitch McConnell and the spineless bootlicking Republicans who are the ones about to shit all over everything.
who said I was joking?
Edit, didn’t see this thread is fifteen years old.
she was 81 when she was offered retirement. she refused. OK, but that needs to be part of her legacy. the fact that she refused to retire at 81 and willingly accepted the risk of the court becoming 6-3 because of it needs to be a part of her legacy just as much as being one of the female pioneers in her vocation.
People like rbg aren’t affected by health reform, voting rights or women’s reproductive rights being rolled back.
she was an upper class, highly educated, highly intelligent white woman. she would be fine no matter what the court decides.
But now possibly millions of people who were not as wealthy, educated, successful or protected by the system will see their voting rights, reproductive rights, health care, etc rolled back.
It should be part of her legacy. she gambled with the well being of people who didn’t have her talents, wealth or privileges, and she lost. now other people will pay the price.
Why

What about Sotomayor, Breyer or Kagan? Why isn’t it just as much their fault for not retiring (and giving up all that they had worked their lives to achieve). Breyer served until he was more than 82, why not excoriate him for not getting out of the way sooner? Perhaps because Breyer was male and males don’t have to sacrifice to protect others. Hmmmm…

So will all the rest of them. And women may not be fine with what is decided about women’s rights in years to come. White men, however should be fine, as you say.

It should be part of her legacy. she gambled with the well being of people who didn’t have her talents, wealth or privileges, and she lost. now other people will pay the price.
So did/have Sotomayor, Kagan and Breyer.
^^If I may answer the obvious answer on behalf of WC, they weren’t 82 years old and gambling against very bad odds to last until they’re 88 despite having multiple cancers.

The fact that during this time of national mourning, anyone would so much as joke about US-Canada relations is disgusting.

DeadTreasSecretaries is a newbie. Doesn’t know how to read entire threads yet. Elbows, on the other hand, is just doing her usual manufactured outrage against Americans whenever possible.
