Thats a valid counterpoint, and yes if Breyer was offered retirement under a democrat, refused and ended up dying under a republican I will be just as mad at him. Looking into it, I don’t know if breyer was asked to retire by Obama.
Ginsburgs family history didn’t look good. I believe her mom died of cancer in her 40s, and her dad died in his early 70s. If she had genetic history where everyone lived to 100, that would be different. But one parent died young, and one died in their early senior years. She is lucky she lived to 87.
This is a bit disingenuous and has been pointed out in other threads. In 2014, the Dems had a majority of 53+2 to 45 and cloture was still at 60 for Supreme Court nominees. RBG wouldn’t have been replaced by a younger her. She would have been replaced by a milquetoast “liberal” that could get past the gauntlet and peel off enough GOP votes to get to the floor. At that point, Reid still believed that the Senate could be saved as an institution and wouldn’t have pulled the trigger on that nuclear option.
It was Mitch “I HATE DEMOCRACY AND EVERYTHING IT STANDS FOR” McConnell to hammer home the foolishness of bringing a disapproving look to a fucking gun fight.
But consider how ridiculous this notion is: that the fate of a democracy and having good things all comes down to her decision not to retire. That’s a lot of responsibility to put on one person’s shoulders and it’s frankly an absurd proposition.
Not saying that you as a poster are ridiculous; I just disagree with your take that America’s continued decline is all her fault. It’s not. Voters have simply failed to confront the Republican heist of American democracy. Of all people - more than you, I, or anyone posting on a message board - RBG has been fighting back against this heist in a very direct and meaningful way.
