Western US dopers - how expensive is gas in your area?

We’re planning a little road trip down to southern California next month, through MT, ID, UT, CA, and NV(specifically, driving to Salt Lake City, then west to the Bay area, down to LA and back up via Las Vegas and the I-15 all the way to Alberta)

We’re planning on staying a few nights with relatives, and doing some camping, so gas will be one of the bigger expenses. Any thoughts on gas prices (ie, do you think that war possibilities might send gas prices into the stratosphere?)I’m still trying to see if this can be done economically, with the higher gas prices and all. My prelim budget figures are an average cost of about $2.00 US/gallon. Does that seem right?

(I thought that I saw something on the news last night about gas being $2.84:eek: a gallon somewhere, but I didn’t catch where it was.)

Hoping to see palm trees and sun soon,
Gretchen

Right now we have $1.729 for regular unleaded…and it just jumped a nickel over the weekend…Eeeew!

Oh, and are you planning on camping in Montana next month? We just had 2 feet of snow and 6 below zero temps…and it can do that in April too…Hope your trip is fun!

In San Diego we’re running at around $2.10 for regular unleaded. I was up in LA this weekend, and it was probably within pennies of the prices down here.

So in SoCal you will need to figure at least $2 per gallon.

Incidentally, I paid $1.89 for diesel last night. So far so good at staying under the $2 mark, but I have a feeling I won’t be so lucky for much longer.

Bremerton, WA - $1.67 per. Mind, that’s AM/PM - ARCO gos…

Oh, trust me, there won’t be any Montana camping next month, that’ll be where we bust out the motel budget! I’m just north of you guys in Southern Alberta, so we have pretty much the same weather, nasty spring blizzards included. So I was kinda expecting Montana to be Arctic-like at that time of year.

My car gets so-so mileage (about 25 mpg) so if the cost goes up too much more we may have to rethink this a bit.

Thanks for the responses so far:)

Las Vegas, Nevada–Between $1.91 and $2.03 for regular unleaded out here. More expensive near the freeways and the Strip.

In Orange county (south of LA) right now- most places are about $2.09 for regular, $2.29 for super. My car is actually formulated to run on the highest octane, so it sucks for me. I think I paid $2.39 the other day when I got stuck near a freeway and had to pay a premium price.

A tip for SoCal- try not to buy gas next to a freeway or an airport- the cost is usually 5-10 cents higher per gallon.

Sounds like a great trip! Keep us updated!

25 mpg is “so-so” gas mileage? I would kill for that!

Part of our problem is that our state requires certain additives that are supposed to reduce our pollution problems. Refiners (allegedly) find this a pain in the ass, so we pay more. Not that anybody’s going to feel sorry for us!

And CA prices should continue to rise, peaking during the summer.

As you know, EJ, I feel your pain. 25 mpg sounds like a dream come true for us Disco girls.

Re: 25 mpg as “so-so”
I spent my first 8 years of driving in a Geo Metro (close to 65 mpg on the highway) so I think I have a bit of a distorted view of what “fuel economy” means! Man, I miss that wee car. I could drive to Vancouver for under $20!

Juanita, it’s gotten worse. We got a lease-returned Range Rover at Christmas… about 1/2 the friggin’ gas mileage of my Disco…

I love it, but it’s killing me.

$2.15 is the cheapest i’ve seen in San Fran, but i’ve not gone gas looking yet (just got to 1/4 tank, it will probably cost $70 to fill up when i do)

Northern San Diego county here, and as of this afternoon the cheapest in town is $2.24 for the crappy stuff.

Can we just blow up Iraq and take their oil already?

In Seattle (which isn’t among the listed areas) it’s about $2.00 now, and will probably go higher.

But still, cheaper than Alberta.

(buying gas in Canada hurts - if you take the time to do the conversions).

What Tars said. I saw 2.27 yesterday near Geary and Masonic, 2.22ish on Ocean.

I drove through Colorado, Utah and Nevada weekend before last and the only place I experienced really high prices (to me) was in Mesquite, NV.

For the most part, for mid grade unleaded it was under $2.00 I spent 1.969 in Mesquite and less than that elsewhere. Keep in mind that in Colorado our mid grade gas is what a majority of the country considers low grade gas but since you aren’t driving through here, you shouldn’t have a problem with that unless Utah does the same thing.

Hope that helps and please drive carefully.

BTW, on I-15:

Richfield, UT was $1.779 (again, mid grade)
Cedar City, UT two days before was $1.839

I turned off on the I-70 exit heading East which was a lot of my time on the road.

Oh how I miss Vegas!

In Salt Lake City it’s been running around $1.63 for the few days.
