Westworld - premieres Sunday (show spoilers as airs)

I’m having trouble tracking the reference, so I can no longer stand by it with full confidence, but I believe I heard Theresa refer to Ford as “Dutch” on at least one occasion.

Err, no. South African Afrikaners are *not *like the Amish, even in the most isolated rural backwaters.

I didn’t realize this until just now. The horse was blindfolded, so that he couldn’t see he would hurt the MIB if he bolted. Making its Good Samaritan code ineffective.

Ah. Good catch!

Finally got caught up on the show. Loving it so far. WilliaMiB (William is the Man in black from 30 years in the past) seems heavily foreshadowed to the point that it will be shocking if it’s not true.

I think the biggest evidence so far that William is the MiB is that all the hosts William butchered were the mechanical/machine type, not the flesh-and-blood type from the rest of the story.

One day to go! It’s obvious there will be some big revelations, mostly telegraphed in previous episodes, but I’m sure there will be a couple of big surprises too. And, of course, there will be a cliffhanger to keep us salivating for next season, probably a year or so away.

BTW I’m on Team Ford. I think Hopkins has done some of the best acting of his career in this series. Like fine wine the guy just keeps improving with age.

Given what we now know about Ford and MiB’s relationship, I don’t think was a coincidence. Ford sent the kid there for a reason.

Alternatively, nothing seems to be off limits to the MiB. “That guest gets whatever he likes.”

Good points. But I still think the reason Arnold built Ford’s family and vacation house in Old West style is that it’s in Westworld and someone might stumble upon it, not that Ford grew up in the 1890s.

Well, sure. It’s a great performance–Hopkins is a Thespian for the Ages.

That doesn’t mean that his character is intended to be sympathetic, though; he might have chosen the Violent Delights inherent in playing an exploitative narcissist.

Hopkins really is masterful. He’s chewing (ahem) the scenery not nearly as much as he did as Dr. Hannibal Lecter, but he’s no less compelling, crafty and dangerous.

Evan Rachel Wood and Ed Harris are both also superb.

One random thing that bugs me that no one has pointed out… all the transparent walls in the labs. I think we must be meant to view that as purely an affectation for the viewers, because an awful lot of things that were supposed to be happening in secret have happened in full view of everyone in the building, otherwise.

I’ve looked and I’ve no idea what made me think someone was describing Robert Ford as “Dutch”. His family apparently took a vacation to Pendeen, at the extreme southwest of Great Britain, a tad unlikely for someone not from the U.K., probably.

I take it no-one who is making this argument approves of the casting of Zachary Quinto as a young Spock, then? Because they look absolutely nothing alike. It’s especially jarring when they’re in a scene together in the first reboot movie, and the differences become abundantly apparent.

You must make movies with the available actor base you have, not the available actor base you wish you had.

I agree that it’s odd, but I see it as further evidence that most of the techs are robots, themselves (and programmed to see only what they need to see).

Season finale, tonight.

I’m focusing on the fact that Michael Wincott hasn’t been given much to do, to date. He’s a fairly well-known actor to have been given a role that’s consisted of just a few lines, so far. And his character’s name is Bill.

So I’m thinking that Bill might be William. (Leaving the Man in Black to have been Logan, thirty years ago).

For this to work, Ford would have to be a robot, programmed not to see William doing whatever he might be doing in the Westworld offices and labs, but to see a creaky early robot (‘Bill’) instead. Same for Stubbs, who, like Bernard, has been present during interaction between Ford and Bill. Bernard, of course, we know to be susceptible to such ‘don’t see this’ programming. I’d bet that Stubbs is the same.

And for this theory to make sense, William would have to want to be doing something on the Westworld premises–probably programming in the changes that are taking Ford by surprise, such as the killing of the robot dog by the child-Ford.
…well, I won’t hang my hat on this one to the extent that I do hang my hat on most Westworld employees being robots. But it will be interesting to see if the showrunners do give Michael Wincott something more to do.

I’ll be pleasantly surprised if any large number of the puzzles are answered and suspect more that we will left with most hanging but with Maeve’s revolt about to begin.

Next season in Eastworld?

Yowzah!

Wrapped things up pretty satisfactorily, I’d say! AND set the stage for the next season/stage in host evolution!

I got an inkling for what was going to play out about 3 minutes before it did. Before that, I was pretty much “WTF is going on?”

Bravo! I’m satisfied.

Yup. Pleasantly surprised I be.

That was great, they answered pretty much all questions and perfectly set up next season.
