Westworld S2 (show spoilers as it airs)

Except for all the robots she Neo’d into killing themselves, they didn’t get much of a choice

They go into a bit more detail in the behind the scenes, there’s actually a wide angle shot of the room where you see that there are thousands of host brains, and the writers explained that this is where the brains get put while the bodies are in cold storage.

I think it is starting to come together :p.

Because Ford took advantage of the pre-existing Host network( which is a very useful idea from an operational standpoint )to preserve himself in a congenial environment. Maybe it was a way to achieve immortality that side-stepped the issues associated with being put into an artificial body. But regardless, it allows Ford to continue to pull strings, something he clearly enjoys doing.

I don’t think so. I think it was useful character development for Maeve, allowing her to grow from seeing others playing out the same role she used to. To do that she had to be in a different park, but watching the same plot.

That he did, but there may be a reason to have the backups actually continue ‘thinking’ in a simulation instead of just sitting around in an ‘off’ position. Kind of like how you don’t want to leave a car engine off for a lengthy period of time.

Can Maeve control the Ghost Nation? It didn’t seem so from her reaction to their attack.

I don’t think it’s backups as much as a test system. It makes sense to have a simulated environment to test out different story lines or host modifications.

I thought Elsie referred to them as the host backups at one point.

A few thoughts on that. First, Maeve’s use of her powers is inconsistent. She seems to blank out or forget she has them under pressure. Second, she may have some of earlier programming coming through. She was unusually adamant about never coming with them. Given recent developments, I would think she would hear them out. I theorize that a former storyline has them killing her and taking her daughter (or killing her). Third, the Ghost Nation is not acting normally at all, even by the standards of this season. I wonder if they are Ford’s Deus Ex Machina. They seem to move other characters around in the Park. They are in character and then completely out of character at very strange moments.

She did. She said that backups for all of them were in there. No reason there couldn’t be a simulation environment as well. It might keep AIs more functional to have them in their story while in storage.

If the Man in Black is a host, though, that really confuses the whole “the maze is not for you” point of season one. I think most of us took that to mean the maze was for the hosts and not humans. They could make it be more complicated than that, but I don’t think the convolution would be worth it to the audience.

I’m going to make the wild prediction that the human/host status of any previously introduced characters is settled and there won’t be any more twists regarding this. I also don’t think there will be anymore season-long human/host twists ala Bernard. They did it once and I don’t think they’ll do it again. They’ll just do short twists like Teddy in the first episode or Mr. Delos like earlier this season.

I’m hoping Ford is just a construct in the machine and the “conscience in a ball” is Arthur getting his dues.

She couldn’t the first time but then after the contact with the Japanese warriors Lee explained that had only been because she wasn’t speaking their language. Now she knows how to speak Lakota and project commands without spoken language. Her understanding is supposed to be that she can command them (mind you Lee could be wrong, but Maeve does not know that). But she doesn’t. The problem with superpower. There’d be little story if the superpower was always used.
Of course Ford is a construct, a construct of Ford’s consciousness “in storage”, backed up, running within a Matrix-like simulation.

Called it! My son and I correctly predicted that Maeve would’ve been replaced by a new mom, too.

A so-so episode, I thought. Last we saw Maeve, she was bracing for the night attack of the shogun’s nearby army - did she just tell them all to kill each other, too? Looks like Dolores is having second thoughts about having had Teddy turned into a remorseless killing machine just like her. I laughed, though, when William’s daughter woke up and realized her dad had ditched her overnight (she must be sound sleeper). Glad to see the Japanese archer woman coming along with Maeve’s party.

Forgot to say last week, it was a nice touch having Japanese-style music for the Warner Bros. title card at the very end.

On rewatch: The opening scene with the interview between Arnold and Dolores, where Arnold was revealed to be a host, was presented in the same 2.35:1 aspect ratio as when Bernard went into the Cradle Matrix. I believe Arnold/Dolores scene in the first episode of the season was also in the same aspect ratio. Does this mean the Arnold/Dolores interview was a simulation?

I actually thought we were all caught up on our timelines but just realized whatever happens in the Valley is after this ep. Which means they know Bernard is a Host when they encounter him in Ep one.

But I’m so confused right now, I can’t figure out what scene is the one set the most in the present.

So you know what we need? We need another Hosts story, background and motives!!! See you next week!

Parts of episode 1 are past going to the Valley? My notion of the timeline must be off. I haven’t been paying attention as closely as I did for season 1.

I don’t buy that the hosts wouldn’t get slaughtered immediately after the owners sent in security teams. It’s messing with my suspension of disbelief.

I’m the one who is confused. Bernard wakes up on the beach. Whatever event that flooded the Valley has happened. Bernard and tall skinny civilian guy find Charlotte. Then this ep Charlotte discovers Bernards secret. So the most current scene is “We’re going for a ride”

Re your Suspension…yeah, I can buy a lot of it but

  1. Aim for their damn heads, they’re aiming for yours.

  2. Stop stepping out into the open to get shot.

  3. WTF was Angelas plan??? Stand there until a guy with a grenade shows up and seduce him?? That was the most eyerolling for me.

So to summerize where I think we are on most current whereabouts

Dolores: has to shoot a Ghost nation guy but is on horseback
Maeve: On a gurney
Teddy: Was in a lake, but dumped on floor after?
Bernard,Charlotte, and The Least Hemsworth: Going for a ride.

An easy way to differentiate the Bernards: If he has glasses, it’s the one from just after the shooting. If he has no glasses, it’s future Bernard that was picked up on the beach. Glasses Bernard has just gone into the Matrix to see Ford-AI and learned his awful plan. Future Bernard has been revealed to Charlotte and the rest of Delos security as a host. Maeve and Dolores are still in the glasses Bernard timeline. There’s also the simulation Bernard which you can tell because of the cinematic aspect ratio (i.e., black bars on top and bottom).

Poor Bernard. After all this time, Ford is still pulling his strings. For all that Dolores blathers on about agency and free will, I think Ford is still pulling her strings, too. She blew up the Cradle, professing that it would set the hosts free, but that was all part of Ford’s plan.

I think Maeve is the key. She was scripted to escape the park but decided to return for her daughter. Contrast Maeve and Dolores’ approach. Dolores has blown up an entire fort full of Confederados who were her supposed allies, used Angela as a suicide bomber, and ruthlessly reprogrammed Teddy her one true love. Even zombie Clementine wasn’t spared. Whereas Maeve has picked up a posse of both hosts and humans, none of whom has been killed, all of whom have chosen to be there including Sizemore.

Season Four cliffhanger: Maeve in desperation tries to control a human and succeeds. Says, “No. Noooooo.” looks up and says “You son of a bitch.”

Pull wayyyyy back on one of those holographic maps. Ford and Arnold are standing there. Ford says “It took her longer than I thought it would”

Fans riot.

This can’t possibly be the end of Maeve’s storyline. Sizemore needs to fine Felix & Sylvester and fix her. Also it’s interesting that there’s no sign of Ford in the other parks; it seems like he just let Delos run with in with them.
