Westworld S2 (show spoilers as it airs)

In re Maeve:

In re Dolores:

The only thing that’s making sense to me is that Ford put his consciousness in both robots, in some ‘underneath their personalities’ way that would ensure his presence couldn’t be detected by a Delos worker with a computer.

Then at some appointed time, with Maeve in place on the mainland, and Dolores in possession of “the Weapon,” he will take over the world.

But who knows. I don’t have complete faith in the Westworld creators, I’m sorry to say; it could all turn out to be a shaggy-robot story.

Whoa! Ford is in the machine!

Well at least William didn’t crack his daughter’s skull open on the assumption she’s a Host; that sure would’ve been a nasty surprise (I’m assuming she actually his daughter & another one of Ford’s mind games).

Fuck you Dolores. You get what you pay for.

Also i have been stretched beyond wayyyyyyy credibility as to what the humans with Maeve…what their motivation is. Guy from Hong Kong yes, English guy…? ugh.Impressed by Maeve? Moved by her? Ok yeah i guess. but the ginger??? That guy should have checked out way back in season one. There was plenty of opportunity.

SO…I’m glad when the quest more or less ended, that the english guy said ‘enough’.

Season 2 has really come together for me in the last two episodes, I must admit. Steady Teddy has gone hardcore, Maeve must contemplate a blended family life, MiB really demonstrates why he’s not dad of the year, Simon has not been seduced into his own narrative, maybe Luke really is just a jumped-up moisture farmer, and Bernarnold would survive a trip into the Total Perspective Vortex.

I think we were all suspecting that Ford was still behind the scenes controlling things. That Ford uploaded himself into an AI isn’t completely unexpected, either. He must have finally gotten rid of the bugs that plagued the Delos-AI. Or maybe dispensing with the human form altogether is what did the trick.

I’m sad to see the end of Shogunworld. It was such a great interlude. I wanted to see more sword fighting. Now did Ford actually recreate Mt Fuji in the park or is that just a backdrop? Either way, it’s becoming increasingly clear that the park isn’t located on some small island in the South China Sea.

What to make of the opening scene? Did Ford try to recreate Arnold as an AI before settling on the Bernard persona? And why is Dolores controlling his motor functions?

Maybe Delos bought Hainan.

Boy this episode just could not hold my attention. I kept having to rewind over and over every time I realized I had gotten distracted and had missed a whole scene or two or three. I still am not sure what happened after Felix fell down that tube.

By the time Bernard made it to the saloon, I knew who was going to be in there.

And, referencing an above conversation, it’s been confirmed that Bernard’s not hiding his host status any more.

Which conversation are you referring to?
It’s been confirmed by whom?
Which Bernard are you referring to, the Bernard we see with Elsie or the future Bernard picked up on the beach?

Hmmm…I like that idea. That’s a little shy of 13,000 sq. miles of land to play with. It’s a very BIG island in the South China Sea.

At one point in the most recent episode, Maeve and the people she was with emerged from the woods, and could see, across the lake, what looked an awful lot like Mount Fuji. So was that supposed to be a real mountain on this island, or some sort of fake background?

Well it goes back to the question I had at the beginning

I’m think these scenes are happening later yet, not before, after the other timelines we are seeing. Dolores on the other side of the uprising is prepping a Bernard to go out into the world for some reason.

Can we summarize when the different threads are occurring, to our best guesses?

Are Elsie and Bernard (body and soul) in the cradle at the Mesa while team is somewhere else in the facility as the train is crashing?

Yes that Ford was in the Matrix, I mean the Cradle, was made obvious as soon as Elsie started referring to an intelligence thwarting her efforts in creative ways. And that Maeve would meet a new host mother and find a host playing daughter who did not see Maeve as Mum, a bit telegraphed too. But the superpower problem. She now knows to command (buy speech or thought) in Lakota if she wants to control Ghost Nation hosts. Maybe it wouldn’t work. These are not just stereotypes of savage injuns, they play a key role, a proxy for another player, I think other than Ford. Maybe Arnold but maybe something completely different. But she did not seem to even attempt it, just “run!” Once you have that power you have to explain why it is not being used to save the day. Fine for allowing hosts to choose their own fate even death, but that doesn’t apply with the Ghost Nation attack.

BTW did anyone else catch that the Raj was Grace’s favourite park as a kid? I guess it’s not as new as I thought. Also it has “pleasure palaces” in addition to big game hunts. I wonder if/when we’ll get to see anything of the other 3 parks.

It could be forced perspective like the Castle at Disneyland just on a larger scale.

I thought their interaction and his confusion with his wife and daughter and not remembering about the elephants showed that he is likely a host himself and doesn’t realize it. I assume he is going through what James Delos was put through only on a ho nutha level.

I’m no good with these theories and probably wrong. That’s just what went through my head during the interaction.

Ugh, this whole season is falling apart.

Why is there a robot Matrix? For what purpose was this built? It seems like a colossal expense, and with no way for humans to “jack in” to the Matrix, a rather untestable playground. Fanwankery aside, I can’t see any reason to keep hosts “alive” in a virtual world, nor can there possibly be any reason to have the Matrix connected to the park network.

The different timelines in season 1 played on the theme of the hosts reliving the same events over and over again, and how dawning memories might shape that realization. We the viewers felt their confusion as we struggled to sort out the timelines. It was a great storytelling device. With season 2, it seems like the different timelines exist because Westworld has to have different timelines now.

All of Shogun World was a pointless diversion. Watch the behind the scenes if you can, it’s clear that the production crew had a great time creating and filming it, but none of it seemed necessary. When the ronin had his big showdown at the end of the last episode, my friend turned to me and said, “I have no emotional investment in this fight,” and I said, “who even is this guy he’s fighting?” And neither of us knew or cared.

And now there’s a frickin’ Matrix. Ugh. What a mishmash of tired ideas and lazy writing.

I thought he was testing her.

I suppose that could be the case but he looked genuinely confused.

I did too. I wasn’t sure after he looked confused about it. He left her the next morning, but he left her with a guard (point for believing her). He did leave her without a horse (point for him being a bastard).

It’s made to test the host’s ability to improv and to test out new features before they debut, but in a controlled environment. The best way I can describe it is it’s the same as Dr. Strange looking at the 14 million or whatever futures or when FiveThirtyEight runs 10,00 simulations of the Super Bowl to figure out who’s going to win. It’s all QA testing.

I agree with this one and it’s part and parcel to my annoyance with this season too. I say this season turned Westworld into a TV show, meaning it’s almost a gimmick factory versus good storytelling.

I wouldn’t go this far just yet, there are still 5 or 6 (I think) episodes left in the series and Shogun could play a bigger role. It’s also planting the seeds that the Woke Host Problem has bled out into the other parks.

I would say the point of Shogunworld is for Maeve to realize she can’t play god all the time. “We choose our own fate” and all that.

Regarding the Cradle, I’m not sure if it’s always running a “matrix” or if that’s Ford’s doing. Bernard seemed pretty surprised that he was in Sweetwater.
